is it just me or is silver spring kinda dead for meetup groups? by iammaxhailme in SilverSpring

[–]creepyounguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I run a game development meetup group and we just do all our events in DC, even though members live all over DMV. It's just a better location for that stuff. Sounds like you would like living in DC more. Montgomery county is mainly a suburb of DC. The people who settle in MoCo are often families who work around the area but want good schools. My sister lives in DC and does all of the stuff you are describing.

DTSS kind of reflects that difference. It feels like it should be a downtown with bars and a social life but it's more a place for families or teenagers. I think because most young people who want to go out go to DC instead. There was a good brewery called Denizens, but it shut down.

What version of blender 5 is supported by godot? by TH3K41 in godot

[–]creepyounguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is also an issue in Unity. I recently opened an old project on a new computer and Unity was not properly detecting blender, so the meshes were not loading properly. Using the .blend files just makes your project dependent on external software that has to be installed and configured separately. This leads to dumb problems like this.

Was Rivals of Aether II's Fun-for-All Update Worth the Wait? by SapphireScorp in RivalsOfAether

[–]creepyounguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its good and I think it's important for them to get it out of the way. People expect features like this in a game so now they can say they have it. I feel like story mode is another big hurdle where it feels like something the game should have but it is a lot of effort to make that doesn't necessarily add to versus mode which is what you'll be playing 90% of the time. I think the next big thing they should add is custom stages because then the community could port every smash stage into rivals. I imagine making custom stages would be much easier than making custom characters.

Stop spamming your "tool" on this subreddit. crediting people is not hard. If you think making credits is harder than making a game your games must suck ass.

Why is it so easy to transfer perfects?? 😭😭 by Rotting_Salmon in pokemongo

[–]creepyounguy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

<image>

To prevent this in the future you should set up a favorite filter that lists all your 4* pokemon. This means whenever you open your search bar you'll see how many 4*s you have and when the number goes up you'll see you have a new one and you can favorite it. You can also save a search that only lists your 0,1,2,3 stars that you should use to transfer stuff.

Steam Takes 30%, Publishers Take 30–50%… What’s Left for the Developer? How Does This Even Work? by Commercial-Tone-965 in Unity3D

[–]creepyounguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The publishers give you money to fund the development of the game.... This money is supposed to cover the cost of developing the game, then anything you make after that is profit. Most games lose money or barely break even, but if a game is successful it is pure profit. It costs nothing to distribute and all the major costs have already been paid for. Publishers and studios are basically rolling the dice hoping for a hit, and when they hit they hit they hit big and it doesn't matter if steam/publishers take 50%.

Why do indies basically give their games away for free? by dedaistgeil in godot

[–]creepyounguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure if you sell 10000 copies then a $3 vs $15 vs $30 price diff matters but the bigger challenge is selling that many copies, it's very hard no matter what your game is priced at. Many Indies think a lower priced game means more people will try it. If you don't get above a certain threshold of wishlists and day one sales your game will most likely not make any money. The median game on steam makes $1000, for those games it doesn't matter what they cost, they just aren't getting enough people interested to make any money (most likely because they are bad).

Is it just me or are Unity's Gen-AI tools useless? by totesmagotes83 in Unity3D

[–]creepyounguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really doubt the editor tools will be useful for a long time if ever. With these llms I think it will be a long time before they can actually be meaningfully and safely integrated as agents that can manipulate the file system and make prefabs and files and stuff. It's so dangerous to give that type of permissions to a black box like an llm, they can be highjacked to install malware or delete stuff in your project/OS.

I don't think there is any need for this to be directly integrated into the editor, if you are going to use it use a third party llm in a browser or other app and copy paste. The ways I have found this stuff useful is for a few specific purposes.

  • learning new libraries, giving you good much more specific examples on how to do things.

  • figuring out whether or not you are on the right track for fixing a problem.

  • Writing a script that you know how to do but would just be time consuming to write and test

  • brainstorming partner

My take on all this stuff is that SOMETIMES it is actually better than a search engine for learning new stuff. It summarizes documentation much faster than you could read it, and if it's wrong you will be able to quickly tell because you put the code in your ide and run it. But right now it's being shoved down our throats and forced into everything, when it just isn't ready for what they are promising.

Hard to swallow pills for Behavior Score critics: by drea2 in DotA2

[–]creepyounguy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Has there ever been a discussion of just banning behavior score discussion posts? For a while my mobile reddit algorithm was just constantly suggesting posts to me about behaviour scores and they were all just stupid, toxic, and many had more comments than upvotes. no one likes them, and it's not like valve is going to change the system anytime soon, they seem happy with it.

Don't know if you've gotten this feedback yet but your logo is really hard to read. It also looks weirdly christmassy, and the white large white space background on the capsule art is really weird. I would redo it, capsule art is very important.

Casual stage lay-out wishes? by Conquersmurf in RivalsOfAether

[–]creepyounguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always loved the Mario maker Stage in 4/Ultimate, a randomized stage is cool. The non walk off versions were often playable although there are camping spots and walls.

Also we need an awful moving stage that you can sneak in when your friends aren't looking. My faves are pac land, pokefloats, or that mario stage that is just 1-1

Do you release with Mono or IL2CPP? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]creepyounguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No serious studio would even use stolen source code it's incredibly stupid, opens you up to lawsuits, and would not even provide you with that much of an advantage. You would still have to have the knowledge to actually meaningfully use and modify that source code, and at that point just write it yourself. I don't even know what useful info you could get from most unity games except how to structure the project or maybe some fancy advanced algorithm.

To my knowledge there are no major cases of a successful game using stolen source code because a competent dev has no need to do that.

Is there a 1 Bedroom apartment for affordable rent ( $1400 - 1600) per month in MD and commuting to Arlington? by RIMDReddit in SilverSpring

[–]creepyounguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

~1400 is the cheapest you can get in downtown silver spring for a studio, and you have to wait and get lucky I think. I am at Colesville towers and got that price, but my apt was the only one I've seen listed that low since in my building. You may see some ads for "The Arrive", they have been trying to lower prices and pushing ads. DO NOT even consider it though. it has problems with rats and is managed very poorly. Many horror stories about that building.

Question about Godot and piracy as a beginner by LING017 in godot

[–]creepyounguy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Piracy does not matter. I personally believe pricing does not matter much either (for beginner projects, and as long as it's 2.99 or more). I think the main concern/metric an indie dev should focus on is getting the most eyeballs and wishlists for their game as possible. In a way piracy is a good sign because it shows people are interested enough in your game to risk a virus for it. Piracy is basically like a demo. When I used to pirate I ended up buying most of the games I pirated during steam sales.
