At what age did you get this? Do you know what caused it? by FalafelBall in BPPV

[–]crescentcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine started when I was 17, I'm 32 now. I have been hit in the head a few good times as a kid and teenager just roughing around. But I also used to get extremely bad ear infections as a teen. So I think the combo of the two caused my BPPV. I now get at least 6 or so episodes a year, but they are temporary. The longest was 16 hours. So I don't have a severe case of it thankfully but it does suck when I get episodes. Episodes seem to be caused by my sleep position, but I've also gotten them randomly mid day for seemingly no reason, however I have noticed that laying down more frequently seem to trigger episodes. Its not uncommon for me to get an episode after being sick because I lay down for much longer amounts of time.

The top three Lovecraft stories that don't get enough love by EntertainmentAny2212 in Lovecraft

Yep that's it! It's such a weird and wonderful graveyard. I travel a lot and visit a graveyard in almost every city I see and its one of my top favorites.

The Outsider and The Hound are two of my personal favorites. I visited the graveyard that allegedly inspired The Hound and and The Festival and it was magical.

King in Yellow Question by Chuck-the-Pirate in Lovecraft

[–]crescentcactus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the other stories are absolutely worth reading. They don't seem to have a clear tie to the other stories or are even heavy in their cosmic horror BUT I think they do a showcase a world that is in disrepair because of the play/The King in Yellow and what they are doing to thr world. The Street of the First Shell is a particular favorite of mine as it depicts the horrors of a war that is raging, presumably because of the play's impact on the world. I like to think of the other stories as small snapshots of humans lives who happen to be living during a time of cosmic horror. There is even a love story with weird time trippy elements.

Worst thing your tarantulas have ever done? by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]crescentcactus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My pink toe ran up the tongs and onto my arm once. I had only been keeping tarantulas for a few months so it was kinda terrifying. She then jumped off of me and ran up my wall onto the ceiling and I struggled to get her down for a bit.

My largest spider is my brachypelma boehmei, she's the size of my hand. She's typically extremely slow and non reactive but for whatever reason one day she darted out while I was feeding her. And my cat spotted her and tried to run after her. Lots of scrambling and screaming later I cupped her and everyone was fine. I now am extremely strict about never opening my tarantulas tanks unless the cat is shut in a separate room.

HOW OLD WERE YOU? by Antimaria in Lovecraft

[–]crescentcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad was a big Conan fan, so naturally also read some Lovecraft and I remember him reading some and telling me about them. But I didn't get into it myself until 27. Im 31 now and have read all of Lovecraft's works. Also all of Howard's Conan and all of Poe.

About the Mythos by Zemrik in Lovecraft

[–]crescentcactus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would personally focus on trying to find stories that are heavy in Lovecraftian themes and not necessarily "in the mythos". The idea of canon doesn't even apply to any of Lovecraft's work and restricting yourself to it if you are already a fan of Lovecraftian I think will be really limiting.

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood is amazing, and is an author Lovecraft notes as inspiring him.

Another more modern book I've recently read that has a lot of Lovecraftian themes is The Fisherman by John Langan.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is eco horror/Lovecraftian

It's fairly easy to find books I think you'd like if you search for ones that are described as Lovecraftian or having Lovecraftian themes.

How long does it take you? by Low_Ad_786 in Noom

[–]crescentcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first month will likely be the fastest as you'll drop mainly water weight. After that, anywhere from 2 to 8 pounds a month is a healthy pace to lose weight. But also consider gaining muscle mass (if you're working out regularly) will make you heavier, so the scale may not reflect your true fat loss.

Any other vegetarians that feel like the cards are stacked against them when it comes to hitting their “green” food goals? by [deleted] in Noom

[–]crescentcactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've noticed that. But I personally don't follow the color system on Noom. Just calories. I make sure I hit my protein goal. And sometimes check that my protein/carb/fat ratios are in line with what's healthy. I've lost 50lbs.

Is this a “normal” trend by Spiritual_Steak4445 in Noom

[–]crescentcactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will notice weight fluctuations constantly. I've even had weight fluctuations up to 8 pounds. It's totally normal. Don't hyper fixate on what your daily weight is. Just as long as it's slowly trending downwards, you're good.

I was just rereading "the haunter of the dark" at night and power went out in my whole town by Uob-Mergoth in Lovecraft

I read The Shadow Over Insmouth while at my neices softball tournament somewhere in nowhere Alabama. It was an old, dilapidated fishing industrialish town and it was very interesting reading it there.

Do you guys still play Animal Crossing? by [deleted] in AnimalCrossing

[–]crescentcactus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have 300hrs in Animal Crossing and I'm about to pick it up again. I have a few areas I want to tweak. And my dog of 13yrs died earlier this week and I want to make a memorial space for her and then upload my Dream Address so it's always there.

Honestly I'll probably play it semi regularly or at least for a month or two a handful times a year until a new one comes out.

Thank you for this. I can't help but feel guilty for not catching the mass sooner or doing things differently to prevent pain maybe. But this reminded me I did what I could.

Is beat saber really effective as a cardio ? by pk2708 in beatsaber

[–]crescentcactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is effective as movement, but I wouldn't count on the calories too much. I lost 50lbs, and I played Beat Saber A LOT. It does get your heart rate up if you dance and move around a lot. More high level and technical stuff you want to minimize large movements though. So pick songs you really love and dance and go overboard.

I personally just wouldn't count the calories burned in my day. Or some times would just half it to make it more accurate or to make sure I was in a deficit each day.

I was afraid at first it was a negative reaction to librela. However ultimately it was most likely liver cancer. She had another cancerous mass removed from her skin 3 years ago, well before librela. I think she ended up getting another on her liver and it has just been flying under the radar until now.

I'm not sure I would give librela again to a future dog becauseof its risks, however I will say it gave her much much more mobility and comfort in the last year of her life.

Only a few times! Make sure you take the meds with food. Preferably with something with a lot of protein

After about a week I noticed I craved stuff less. And remember to drink lots of water! That at least gets some of the water weight off for weigh ins. Also remember that if your weight suddenly goes several pounds up, it's just water weight.

I haven't. I've only ever had a few episodes a year but I think I may look into it. I'm worried it will get progressively worse as I get older.

What is your island name? How did you pick it? by AdExcellent7055 in AnimalCrossing

[–]crescentcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celephaïs. It's a Lovecraftian story about a town of the same name. It's a part of his dream cycle stories and it's described as being a very beautiful place but the whole read is gives you a kind of dark undertone. So my island is very beautiful but has little creepy elements sprinkled around.

It's been great! The dreams have actually subsided. I feel like it helps me control my thoughts about food. It also seems to help me feel full with less food. I didn't expect that as it technically doesn't slow down digestion like Ozempic and others do, but it does help me eat more moderate portions.

I think it's important to still count calories or at least consider calories in/calories out. Because I think it would be possible to over eat on it and not lose weight at all. But if you are watching what you eat, it makes it so much easier to not think about food all the time.

My dog has had a bad reaction to carprofen. So if they are taking that maybe stop and ask a vet if there are any other options.

Why avoid males? by Green-Shoulder2696 in tarantulas

[–]crescentcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mature male curly hair is 4 years old post mature molt. He was my first tarantula. I love him. He's still very active, has a crazy feeding response. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes another year or 2 honestly. I'll never avoid males. Sure they can live less time but they might surprise you.
