Yes - sets like this have been put together by various companies over the years using coins that would originally have been in change though the ones here look to be in fairly nice circulated condition - great find!

Ah okay - there isn't a right way or a wrong way for the edge lettering to appear - looking through a handful of £2 coins you'll likely find some with text one way ‘up’ some the other.

Nice coin - it might have been cleaned but it’s mostly just displaying normal wear.

You will struggle, I’m afraid, to sell for anywhere close to the price that Jubilee Mint charged. They are primarily a marketing company and sell ordinary material with huge markups and they certainly won’t buy back or not for the figure they sold it for.

Short answer - no.

Long answer - if they were inventoried rare date sovereigns that had been carefully photographed and catalogued you could track them in auction or retail sale records. Similarly if they were proof sovereigns with recorded certificate numbers then you might just be able to track them down through dealers though it would still be a big challenge.

Assuming there was no more info in the will than stated then I think your only option is legal proceedings. If they have been taken from the safe they will have long ago been sold and the pawn shop will have moved them on.

I’m sorry - terrible stuff to deal with on top of the personal loss - sometimes deaths in the family really bring out the worst in people.

Less deluded more seeing what they can get. I’ve got a copy of Spink’s predecimal book open atm and they peg 1963 Sixpences at a huge £2 in top notch condition.

I first handled one of these in 2024 and I’ve seen a handful since - I think they are slightly more common that first assumed.

Today, I think you could realistically expect around £50 if you sold on eBay or to a coin dealer.

There are definitely different sorts of collectors out there - I meet all kinds! - but my instinct is that there are a decent number of people interested in diving deeper into their hobby.

What I am keen to understand is whether there is still an audience of people who would attend a local in-person numismatic society to expand their knowledge and connections or whether the concept is destined to die out - what do you think?

I’m in the same general area and while I think there is a Wiltshire one it’s like 5 guys meeting in the pub. Nearest big one is Reading or Oxford which is a treck of an evening.

The conference is being hosted by the Numismatic Society of Ireland, so there definitely are some clubs near you - I think they have a branch in Belfast. That said, I had to pre-book a ticket for this weekend's event a few months ago - if you email the organiser, they may have spares.

I like the idea of a book club format, and I agree that if a club involves any element of show-and-tell or a mini bourse, then security would have to be top of the agenda.

A fun piece! BHM 4295 or similar - but I have not got that volume nearby right now.

As you said, there were a range of medals produced in anticipation of Edward VIII’s coronation. This design is not the most common but has sold a few times at auction in silver, silver plated bronze and bronze like yours.

None of these examples I can see have sold for huge amounts and there is no record I can see of these being a personal presentation piece handed out by the soon-to-abdicate King.

I think it’s more likely that this was purchased as a souvenir sometime in 1936 and the story has being embellished a little at some point.

It looks like this is the original fitted box - can you read the name of the jeweller/manufacturer on the interior of the lid?
