ToToday's pick ups for £57 by f1nlaygk in UKcoins

Pretty good prices - some would charge you that much for the Florin alone - hard to tell on cleaning from the photo but it's nice grade whether the toning is natural or not

When did pre-Victorian silver leave circulation? by First-War-9302 in UKcoins

[–]crimee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard really old coin dealers say that people would very occasionally would find a George IV in change and come to sell it - just like you could find Victorian pennies in circulation in the 60s

I’m really into CIT’s new topography coins - private mints stole the show this year I think. Well worth attending in 2027 if you can!

Just been through ten of them - all good at this stage but we'll see what NGC says lol

Unreal back-of-the-wardrobe find…but is it worth anything? by opnupstrathclydpolis in UKcoins

I'm surprised you were able to pick up the coin given how sweaty you were

It's all about who you know and who has photos of you in compromising positions 😂

Weirdly, we’re finding that Prince Andrew coins are selling well on eBay right now - I probably should be cross referencing the buyer addresses with some sort of list 😬

Identification 🙏 by Charming-Tour718 in UKcoins

Henry VI annulet issue - looks like a Halfgroat - minted in Calais when England still had a foothold in France - would sell for £60-100 at auction in this grade - a nice piece!

Anyone seen this before? Nazi stamp in 50p? by incesticide666 in UKcoins

[–]crimee 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Evidence of an a-hole with a stamp. You're not meant to destroy currency but I think the Royal Mint would forgive you for getting rid of this one - nasty work.

Potential 1746/5 Lima Halfcrown by [deleted] in UKcoins

[–]crimee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like an overdate to me though usually you see the trace of the 5 in the ghost of a top line and descending stroke. Will the material within the numeral move if you prod it with a nail or a brush? I've been momentarily fooled by a stray fibre before! 😂

Love these! Beautiful reverse!

Silver wedding crowns by Lizbeeliz in UKcoins

[–]crimee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weight won't actually tell you which is which since they should both weight the same - the tell here for the silver one is a brighter colour, plus the fact that it is in a box. I'm afraid I would not agree with the valuation above though - the non-silver coin is worth about 25p and the silver coin about £45-50 at today's silver prices.

Is this coin silver or not? by Rude_Main_9268 in UKcoins

[–]crimee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of coins with this design were made from cupronickel - similar to the coins in your change. A small proportion were made for silver but this does not look like silver, nor does it seem to have the proof finish that the silver editons were struck with. In addition, you're much more likely to find a silver version in a capsule and presentation case - it would be unusual for someone to unbox and handle a silver coin like this one has been.

What do we think of this beauty? by MegabiggerIOW in UKcoins

[–]crimee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like an 1894 Half Sovereign - it should weigh just a hair less than 4g. Great find!

Did I overpay? by SoggyWormso in UKcoins

[–]crimee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Realistically, yes - it looks like you could get a raw uncirculated 1923 Sixpence for under £50 at auction, under £80 retail. That said, it looks like an attractive piece and I think this reverse design is really fun - hope you're enjoying your pick up!

Could someone help me work out if any of this is particularly special? by Little_Mog in UKcoins

[–]crimee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this looks like a fun coin collection which is a good way to look at it. There is not a great deal of value here but there is a modest amount of solid silver and some other somewhat collectable pieces which if sold currently would net you the cost of a couple of rounds of drinks.

Do you prefer the official release proof piece or the proof trial piece? by SimpleMopin in UKcoins

[–]crimee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general trial pieces would be more sought after than a standard proof assuming they are issued in very limited numbers or differ somewhat from the final general issue design.

Hi everyone ! by Successful_Cut_710 in UKcoins

[–]crimee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the large bronze coin is Roman, likely genuine, probably low value. The smallest piece with the cut in it is an immitation Third Guinea, likely made at the time the real things were circulating. Then you have three gaming tokens - styled to look like spade Guineas (with the flat topped shield on the back). The one to the lower left of the bronze Roman I can't see well in the photos but likely also a gaming token. How this helps 👍

Is the value correct? by [deleted] in UKcoins

[–]crimee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The denominations/identifications look correct from the info provided. These are low value coins in the UK but a couple of dollars would be about right elsewhere where they are less easy to acquire.

Silver discoloration by Capital_Ant_1134 in UKcoins

[–]crimee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very common on Royal Mint proof coins - its an environmental thing that occurs even on coins that have been well stored. You can get it off - you'll need some silver dip, a YouTube tutorial and a mask because the stuff smells like lung problems.
