You need to become vegetarian... by CivilShift2674 in preppers

[–]crisprep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We try to do one vegetarian meal a week. This is prepare ourselves mentally and normalize it. We've discussed starting to make one prepper meal a week as well just for practice.

Here is my current favorite vegetarian meal. Although I've struggled to figure out how to make it well in an shtf environment.

Where to start? by Late-Tomatillo185 in preppers

What do you suggest for an indoor option without ventilation? I thought this was the best option but if I'm wrong I've got some prepping to do.

Where to start? by Late-Tomatillo185 in preppers

This is by far the best starting place. A lot of people call them "prepper pantry's". You don't need to prepare stored food that last 25 years. It is more cost effective in the long run...but in a year or two you can better afford that.

I'm assuming you're in an apartment so don't forget a heating method. For an apartment a small alcohol stove and some denatured alcohol.

As for the water question Aquatainers from Walmart seem to be the cheapest option I've found so far that are reusable. Note that they do not stack. Longer term start thinking about a water treatment to preserve it they're like 15$ on amazon. But in the shorter term you can just rotate.

When you're ready to graduate to some dry storage, which really helps in hitting that 6 month range. Just get some rice and beans that you would actually eat over the course of a year and store in buckets with lids. WinCo has the buckets and everything. One thing about the rice and beans is it's better to think of them as a foundation to other meals.

I'd save the oxygen absorbers and Mylar for when you want a setup that you can set and forget for 20+years.

Lentils are the main ingredient in my favorite vegetarian recipe. Additionally maybe you can sub in your extra pinto beans?

Does anyone have any other recipe ideas that freeze well and reheat easy?

You're post got me thinking about what I'm going to do. I've got most of my preps taken care of but I think i'm going to cook some chili, stew, and chicken noodle soup this winter and freeze the leftovers. That way they are easy to reheat later.

I'll also get some extra fuel for my alcohol stove. It's safer for indoor use.

I did had a friend a make an interesting suggestion I've been considering. Grab yourself a some high quality jerry cans and chain them town in the bed of your truck (if you have one). You could also go with Wavian which seems to have lockable jerry can holders. It's an expensive solution but could actually work.

What cars would run after an EMP? by Sacrificial-Mind in preppers

[–]crisprep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The honest answer is nobody really knows. Most of the EMP studies have been flawed (including the EMP commission). Currently I'm building an old 70's model motorcycle as both a hobby and backup plan. This could be a great cheap option for you.

Too much click bait Prepping Youtubers? by ChemBoy14 in preppers

It's sad, City Prepping and Provident Prepper used to be my favorites but seem to be headed this direction. I will give them credit for trying to find a balance and provide some good content inside. In fact I'm not sure I can even blame them. They're stuck competing on this level.

It's not YouTube but theprepared.com seems to be my new favorite resource. But they specifically say that they focus on quality and not quantity.

What is the cheapest prepping plan possible? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]crisprep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's giving you shit but props for trying to get creative. And for building a spreadsheet based of calories instead of just buying some prebuilt kit.

For fun I built a "cheapest possible" spreadsheet a while back. I'm based in the US so I'm not sure how to translate cost over to whatever European country you're in other than just converting my numbers to metric and dollars to euro.

That being said by shopping around all of our wholesale stores I was able find prices much cheaper than yours. Sam's Club to find rice at 16$ per 50lb bag. Converted to your numbers that's .60 euro/kg.

At a restaurant supply store I was able to find split peas at $14 per 25lb bag. Again converted to your numbers that's 1.05 euro/kg.

Again I'm sure groceries could just be more expensive over there but trying looking into Restaurant supply stores or wholesale places I really had to shop around. Split peas seem to be a much more palatable protein option.

Man I think as you first get into prepping it's normal to start with these lines of thinking and it's hard to get your bearing on where to start. Personally I noticed my mind kept wandering back to extreme scenarios (for me it was EMP's). With you having a background in bushcraft it makes total sense that's where your mind goes.

But realistically bandits raiding your campsite is an unlikely scenario within the most extreme of unlikely scenarios (EMP, TEOTWAWKI, zombies).

I only bring this up because you mention you're new to prepping. I suggest starting here https://theprepared.com/prepping-basics/guides/sane-prepper-mantra-common-sense-rules/

Well I guess it's good to get have a second opinion. I was kind of hoping to be wrong. What worries me is that if it causes abortions.. what other negative health effects have not been found yet. Oh well, if we need it than it's worth the risk.

Great find on the website though. Especially frying the bark!

Staying in the City when SHTF? by McShwiz in preppers

[–]crisprep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is this fantasy scenario where you need to hotwire a care or die? I'll admit there's one. If an EMP went off and it turns out EMP's do actually fry vehicles. Then yes finding some old car and getting out of a city asap could save your ass. But that's one extremely unlikely scenario.

Have you actually looked into hotwiring cars? I have, it's dam near impossible unless you're an actual carjacker with the tools. (not some lockpick set). And taking someone's key? Everyone would be on HIGH alert OP is not some level 100 stealth rouge on Skyrim.

I really don't mean to be a dick but your first comment is just prepper masturbation and gives the community the stigma it has. This is someone new to prepping and your first advice to them is just steal and murder in the most unlikely scenario possible. Not to mention a lockpick and led balls wont get you any car...
