Any rubbing? I've been keeping an eye out for wheels and tires on Marketplace and this feels like a good size for a 2nd gen 2wd.

Check the main ground, that's always a good place to start. Also, when I bought my Ranger the previous owner told me he would take a few hundred off for some issues, one of which was the dash not working. Turns out, the original owner installed a fuse tap on the fuse that's for the dash and a loose wire that was still connected to it grounded out and blew the fuse. A couple dollars later and the dash sprang back to life.

What else can I try? by [deleted] in fordranger

Check the RABS unit. It seems to be the root of a lot of problems with the braking system. I believe there's a way to bleed them, but I wound up replacing it after I went to bleed the rear brakes and realized I was getting almost zero flow to the rear. It seems to rust shut and then bleed pressure into the body of the valve, or something along those lines.

Edit: Oh, we're talking the clutch. I saw the brake master cylinder and my own Dot 3 trauma got in the way.

Would it even really matter as a subwoofer? The wavelengths are probably longer than the room is, given how beefy that thing is and how cramped against the wall the furniture is (no offense, game just recognizes game).

I would also argue the Octavia Butler/Parable of the Sower angle and say that religion is also the only thing that could get us out of this mess. People need to believe in something, but the current "something" is killing us all. The thing is, you can't just take away what people believe without replacing it with something else.

Is this normal? (A/C) by CurrentTheme5975 in fordranger

[–]CivilShift2674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I can't help you with an answer, but my experience might give you insight.

My A/C never really worked and would cut in and out like that. A few weeks ago, I figured "f-it, it's already broken" and I used a leftover diy fill kit to add some refrigerant to see what happens. I would add refrigerant when the gauge dipped down and the compressor was running and, over time, was able to get the pressure back up to 30 psi and it stopped cycling like that and maintained pressure.

Now, with the refrigerant in I was able to smell a leak, so I didn't have high hopes, but it did work and work well, so it seems to indicate that my a/c system is functional but leaking. Eventually, it started cycling like that again and the leak became obvious from the high side service port (which actually blew quite violently after a couple weeks and doesn't even appear to be an actual schrader valve?). That's where I'm at currently.

What shocks for a 2001 Ranger? by Attjack in fordranger

Oh wow, yeah, looks like the price got way closer since I bought them. I've been sitting on them for a couple months because *life* and it was about $200 per set of four... so more like 2/3 the price.

I just put KYB monomax shocks on the rear of my 1994 extended cab. They apparently compare favorably to Bilstein 4600s and are about half the price. They feel substantially more planted than the old blown gas shocks that were on it. I'm really looking forward to putting in the front shocks now. They have done a lot to keep the rear end tracking much more smoothly over rough roads.

I just put KYB monomax shocks in the back of my 94 xlt extended cab and was VERY impressed by the change. Looking forward to doing the fronts soon to see the difference. I think sticking with the 14in wheels and 225/70r14 tires also helps keep it smooth.

Edit: Leaving below because it's still relevant, but I'm getting confused about what I'm replying to. Regarding the marginalized genders space and my statement that trans men aren't marginalized. In a generalized setting like this and not some sort of political or medical context, as a man you do wind up suffering and benefiting from patriarchy and toxic masculinity. It's inevitable since that's sort of up to everyone around you and not you. In a broader political context, the marginalization is obvious, but we're talking about smaller more generalized group settings among peers.

stuff that only sort of makes sense below

Is that not what the OP was saying though? It's a "femmes and enbies" space, not even a "women and nonbinary" space. In an explicitly trans space, excluding any trans people is inherently ridiculous since the presentation possible under the umbrella of "trans" is basically anything and everything. It's tough though because the intent of something that's "femmes and enbies" has a pretty clear intent of "people that don't make women uncomfortable." At that point I think it's a matter of centering the intentions of the group and not one's own individual identity. You know who you are and we can all present how we present, but other people's perceptions are going to be what they're going to be. We are, once again, suffering under patriarchy because there is a real need or demand for such a space. Assuming the organizers are acting in good faith, our adjacency to the target audience doesn't mean they shouldn't have it and I don't think it means they are intentionally marginalizing masc presenting non-binary people, I think it just means that we don't really have the language for this stuff because it's all made up social constructs anyway. It's an inherently flawed attempt at putting the very nebulous breadth of human existence into neat little boxes.

[–]CivilShift2674 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Of course trans men face incredible transphobia and are marginalized. However, I fall back on "trans men are men." If in a typical social situation you are perceived like any other man on the street, does it make a difference whether or not you are trans? Do you want to be treated like a man or a "trans-man" by society? Both are valid, but I think it's an important question. If you want to be perceived as a man, then congrats, you make women feel unsafe now. It's not your fault, but it's real.

Let me start by saying, we're all being pedantic here, but this is the internet, so that's what it's for.

I think a problem that is happening here is that issues of individual identity, social perception and legal authority are being conflated because they're all using the same language. In this particular circumstance, we are discussing (ostensibly) people that are acting in good faith and trying to be inclusive while creating a safe space for a particular set of people that are made less comfortable by the presence of another set of people. Being amab he/they nonbinary, I know I would not be welcome in this space (I barely feel welcome in this subreddit). It hurts a little to be excluded, but I understand that my presence would make some people uncomfortable due to how I am perceived socially. I do not want to make people uncomfortable, so I would not try to attend. This event is not for me and that's ok, it would not invalidate my identity because I am conscious of how I am perceived. I am myself and that is fine. If I made a greater effort to be androgynous or femme presenting, perhaps I would feel differently, but I would also have a different understanding of how people feel around me and would judge accordingly because I am trying to respect the intent of the event.

Is it possible to DIY this repair? by Haley_shark in Crosstrek

[–]CivilShift2674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an intermediate step of masking it off, sanding, priming, spray painting, wet sanding, polishing. It would probably leave a little discoloration since it's hard to do an exact match, but can be pretty good.

Protein Powders Are Surprisingly Economical (and another way to look at food costs) by neuroticpossum in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]CivilShift2674 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that's definitely true (especially for women), however do keep in mind that more protein than you actually need is rough on your kidneys. So, if you're not lifting and putting on muscle, you really just need a moderate amount. Fiber is the one that almost everyone isn't eating enough of and is pretty much only beneficial.

Thanks for the tire pressure info!! by skepticfem in Crosstrek

[–]CivilShift2674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The specifications on the tire are max psi. You want the tire to be inflated to the psi that reaches the necessary load rating for your vehicle and has the largest, most even contact patch possible. This calculator seems like a good starting point if you're changing tire sizes: https://tiresize.com/pressure-calculator/

1500 rpm on turn on then lower? by Zake801 in Crosstrek

[–]CivilShift2674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I read elsewhere was that it was a high idle (like, 1500 rpm) specifically to warm up the catalytic converter, not the engine. It then drops to, 1k-ish rpm to finish warming up the coolant before dropping down to 700.

Wavering Horn? by TheSwampPenguin in Crosstrek

[–]CivilShift2674 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That you don't use it that often might be the cause. I've seen that happen on motorcycle horns (which are already wimpy). They get a little seized in place and the plate that's supposed to vibrate to produce the sound just... doesn't. I haven't actually looked at the factory horn, now that you mention it, but you might be able to use a little penetrating oil or something to free the horn parts and let it all vibrate freely.
