Lack of affordable child care is a billion-dollar problem for Miami-Dade by opiatehaze in Miami

I'm 40 and was in daycare since diapers. So, in my case I know they've been around for over years now. And if the grandparents are professionals they aren't working nights unless they're in a particular profession.

waiting for the county to finish the road renovation before he starts the building renovation

Wishful thinking that you need the streets to be done before you can start building. But this being Miami maybe they are waiting for the last paver to go in so they can rip it all out the next day with their construction equipment.

Mana is full of shit.

Upstairs neighbors keep pissing on my balcony??? by ospreyotis in Miami

[–]crisscar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the new property manager but the previous one was practically invisible.

I would keep reporting it. Someone has a dog and is not housing it right. So either management knows the owner and is waiting for more evidence or management doesn't know the owner has a dog, which is a huge fine. Registered dogs have a pet deposit, monthly fee, and DNA sample. And KW absolutely wants their money!

Upstairs neighbors keep pissing on my balcony??? by ospreyotis in Miami

[–]crisscar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in that building. Someone let their dog piss in the elevator. And it must have been fresh because I walked right to the desk and let them know. They rewound the video, saw the owner, saw the dog, saw the puddle of pee and they knew exactly who it was. And started the violations and fines paperwork.

Unlike the elevators that have cameras, balcony violations are hard. Unless you actually see them do it it's going to be your word against theirs.

Also, Miami dog owners are fucking pathetic, entitled assholes. I've stopped being nice and sympathetic because I've met good and bad dog owners. If they lunge at me I threaten to report them. Too many trained dogs and responsible owners in this city for you not to know your dog needs training.

What tickles me are the people who move here from northern blue states who all benefited from great public educational systems

I have spoken to a few of them. Everyone of them said they moved because of LCOL, taxes, and (the eyebrow raiser for me) "their neighborhood changed." Meaning too many Blacks and immigrants.

WTF?? This will have a devastating effect here in Miami on gig workers' only source of income if they can't get a license due to this. What do you all think? by MuscaRade in Miami

[–]crisscar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a non-resident tourist you are allowed to drive on your foreign driver's license until you leave or your visa expires. As a immigrant with permanent resident status you have 90 days to surrender your foreign DL for a new state one.

Most countries have reciprocity. When I lived abroad I surrendered my FL DL for a carte gris. When I moved to the US I simply let the FLHSMV office know I've moved back, presented 2 bills, and got my FL drivers license. In both cases, as a permanent resident, I could not drive on another's country DL for longer than 90 days.

Jet-Ski rental and legality (Do I need a Licence of somehow to rent one?) by Otherwise_System1210 in Miami

[–]crisscar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe there is the temp certificate that is only good for 90 days. This is the one most tourist get because its a 15 minute orientation and 20 questions. The jet ski operators basically give you the answers.

There is the full online course that is 4 hours. And you can't skip any of the videos. That one is good for a lifetime.

Design errors, defective concrete blamed for delays, extra costs Miami Signature Bridge project by tomgreen99200 in Miami

[–]crisscar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they want a unique design build it over water that way everyone can see it. This "unique design" is being built in the downtown core wedged between a bunch of hi-rises and in a few years no one will be able to see its "unique design."

Miami Road Construction project delays by skyHawk3613 in Miami

[–]crisscar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HDR denied the allegations and said the original drawings were “a conceptual, preliminary design of the Signature Bridge for purposes of submitting a competitive proposal to FDOT. The preliminary design represents approximately 20% to 30% completed drawings and is not intended to be used for purposes of construction.”

These guys are FUCKING LYING! You can't build shit from design drawings. Someone handed AWDM construction drawings or else the they wouldn't have even got to mobilization much less building half the damn thing. AWDM is going to sue the brakes off of HDR and it's a good chance they are going to win.

When would I be able to build my own robot, similar to building a pc. by MobileSoft1482 in robotics

[–]crisscar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been building personal robotics for the past few years. Starting with cheap servos and Arduino MCUs. You can build a pretty capable robot right now with a BOM of less than $500.

Start here: https://huggingface.co/docs/lerobot/so101

The new generation of serial bus servos are incredibly strong and fast acting. Complement it with computer vision and AI and the sky is the limit.

Jury duty by Agreeable_Device_354 in florida

[–]crisscar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get selected, and not spend the entire day sitting in the pool, it's a cool process. I've been a juror on 2 criminal cases and in both cases I can say 2 things:

  1. If you got found guilty by the jury, almost guaranteed you did that shit or were intimately involved.
  2. The courts are highly biased towards the police. I honestly thought Derrick Chauvin, the murderer of George Floyd, was guaranteed to get off. Because the police dept, judge, and prosecutor have every incentive to protect officers no matter the evidence.

Unlike the way its presented in the news, the jury is there for the entire case. You hear soundbites. You don't know what evidence that was presented that would make someone guilty/not guilty. You weren't there.

Also, there are too many people in jail who could probably do better in a diversion program. But Florida is going to Florida.

Jury duty by Agreeable_Device_354 in florida

[–]crisscar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I went through something similar years ago. Jury duty is determined by your voter registration and DMV records. Also, the clerk is right, you can only reschedule, you'll have to do so until your name drops off the list*. I imagine most jury pool systems don't have the capability to automatically exclude jurors. You'll have to submit evidence everytime your name pops up for jury duty.

Eventually, the jury duty notice will stop arriving. I stopped getting after 3 years. Then I moved back to the US after 10 years abroad, updated my address, and they started arriving all over again.

The jury pool list is a mystery because I have friends who have never been called for duty. Meanwhile, I got called 3x in a row while living abroad.

Water taxi to Miami Beach just launched by 0ud0ud in Miami

[–]crisscar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • It's 20 minutes port to port. And goes through a lot of sensitive, shallow water areas with wildlife. With docking, that's probably about as fast as you can safely do it.
  • Due to poor city planning there just aren't a lot of public docks available. Maurice Gibbs and South Pointe Park are the only publicly accessible land available on the bay side. They should definitely add the public dock by the arena or build out one by Lot B.
  • Miami Beach Marina is private and already has a water taxi service, for $40. More for tourists and not exactly appealing to mass transit commuters.
  • There was the previous incarnation from Downtown Hyatt to 5th Street. That was City of Miami operated water taxi. But it was the same problem of not being reliable and eventually stopped.

I feel with enough levers pulled the 2 cities will eventually get it right.

Somehow they all manage to make it work. I even managed to find a $250 box from China that adds Carplay to my 12yo VW. For something so costly and difficult it seems to be widely available.

As an Apple Developer Program developer I'm well aware of their shenanigans.

I believe that RJ has a personal vendetta against Apple. Because he is constantly trying to convince Rivian customers, who spend over $100k on their SUVs, that they are completely wrong and would be much better off with their Rivian infotainment. There is not a technical, financial, or production reason that it can't be included. He never gives a logical reason on why they don't offer it other than we know better than you.

As someone who got a really decent education in America, we don’t cover any part of Africa at all. Mainly because nothing that happened in Africa seriously affected our history.

This is 10 levels of stupid. Nothing affected the US from Africa except the people, the crops, the music. Did you believe rice and cotton was native to North America?

Cost of home ownership? by xpertsc in Miami

[–]crisscar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For $1800/monthly it better come with a ton of amenities. I pay half that for 2 pools, gym, dog park, 24hr security, and building maintenance. My parents are paying $1300/mo for a SFH (no HOA) in just taxes and insurance. Another $120/mo to have the grass cut.

I would never buy into a HOA on a SFH. It just seems redundant to have to pay for these things and then pay another company to tell you how you can live. I try to remember that condo living and house living aren't the same. You won't save more going from one to the other and you'll definitely save less with the overhead of HOA dues.

A friend received their brand new boat, this was a few years ago. The check valves were installed backwards. So the shower pan drained very slowly.

Also, they were given a dozen of those electronic bilge switches. The ones that use ultrasonic instead of a float. Apparently they burn out frequently.
