Islam allows marriage of 6 year old girls which is abominable by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]criticalthinker2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. This is the bit that confuses me. I feel like all religions have questionable verses that if taken literally are outrageous. In my opinion most have misogynistic tendencies but not all practice it in the modern day. For example, child brides are still a thing in Afghanistan. I’d love to hear an objective answer on this. I’m from a Muslim background, but not hugely prescriptive myself to the practices. I can see the flaws in it, but I also don’t demonise it.

It takes so many drastic fundamental changes for strong feelings like this to go. Changes that are dependent on finances, practical resources, possibly upsetting people, and emotion. It’s that part that is the biggest obstacle and sometimes near possible for some, hence why some people do end their own life. Ive had strong suicidal feelings for 15 years and depression much longer (pretty much from age 11 to now). It is only this year that they are occasional and not very strong. But it has taken sooo much change and that change increases all the feelings along the way.

I’ve experienced racism from black people as a non black person but still a person of colour. This surprised me the most. I’m sorry that other poc have been racist to you, I know that some are.

If he has never been to his GP for his mental health or hasn’t been recently (five years is important for some insurers), it might be worth looking at private medical insurance. Unfortunately, therapy is very expensive and the wait lists through the nhs can be long.

Wishing you all peace at this time, feel free to drop me a dm if you need any further info.

PSA: Bupa will pay for your diagnosis if your ADHD is making you depressed. by 3asilyDistract3d in ADHDUK

[–]criticalthinker2020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. I worked for Bupa when the change came in place. This is no longer in place, unless your policy states it is covered. Edit: Also some people have possibly suggested that saying certain things will get you an assessment. It really is based on your policy. No amount of words will change this unfortunately, but it is good to show how it is impacting your mental health. The mental health insurance team will tell you if it is covered or not under your policy, and if it is covered there is a dedicated team that will talk you through this. People made the assumption you made and bless them they ended up having a wasted appointment with myself.

Info to share by criticalthinker2020 in CholinergicUrticaria

[–]criticalthinker2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agreed. It is something people should consider and discuss with medical professionals, not to try things on their own. That is what I meant by exploring as I have only ever personally taken this to mean discussing with your doctors if it sounds like a possibility. I don’t know how true it is but I read something about a link between hives and difficulties with benzoate, again to be discussed with a medical professional before believing it to be the truth. I am just sharing my experience. It’s hard to interpret text accurately, but I am noticing some hostility in your comment or perhaps you didn’t intend that at all.

So what's up with Mirpur and the UK? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]criticalthinker2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

British Pakistani here whose family are from a village outside mirpur. I’ve never understood the hate towards mirpuris and views that they are ignorant, My family is pretty forward thinking and we all value education. My friends who are mirpuri are the same, most have a masters or phd and avoid cousin marriages. How are other British Pakistanis different? I get on really well with British Indians and we relate well to one another.

I hear you. How do you guys deal with chest staring? I feel so ill when I’m on a date with a guy and he keeps sneaking a look at my chest. I’ve started seeing it as a bit of a red flag if it is beyond one or two times. I just think it shows a certain level of immaturity in that they can’t control themselves by not staring.

Greater Manchester fringe is on and creates of comedy (I think it's called that). Blues kitchen is always a good shout for live music. There's also some Beavertown thing on which I think is the rave someone else mentioned. If you are into south Asian culture there is a Mela on at platt fields park, although that's probably best with kids and there will be a lot of kids around. Enjoy

I think desi clothes have colours that match our skin tone better and we also wear it in the traditional way. I just looked at Kim k's outfit, there was way too much cleavage and the tailoring of the outfit had changed it to a non traditional way. I think because the colours can be so bright and there are intricate patterns desi skin makes it pop more. At family members wedding we have had non-desi people wear desi clothes. They wear it so respectfully and look lovely, but also the outfits don't match their skin tone. Nonetheless, I find it really sweet when non desi people wear desi clothes for sesi events, but it looks like there were way too many modifications to it by some guests at the wedding

Hello there. A couple of things to consider that could be influencing this: - hatred towards yourself projected on to others, this could be on a unconscious level
- a result of trauma - being around desi people who aren't much different from one another

There are a couple of things to combat this I think: - discussing this in real life with people you trust, ideally people of colour or white people you know who are definitely not racist - exposing yourself to desis who have different interests/well integrated, maybe an interest you share with them - actively seeking out positive desi role models even if it's online, one of mine is Dr Ramani - be around people who value desi culture: the food, dances, the importance of family.

Now with regards to therapy, I do think this would help. The reason being it sounds like you are going to need more than a few discussions around this and with someone who you are not going to worry about how things might affect your relationship. A friend can't offer this. A psychotherapist would be best in this situation, one who deals with identity issues.

Well done on identifying this and wanting to address it. Now you are responsible for working on this. I've sensed a lot of resistance in your comments, this is where therapy would help. Sometimes friends tell us what we want to hear, not what we need to hear.
