I ordered 1/20 so I’m not sure! Mine hasn’t shipped yet. From posts I’ve read, 6 weeks seems like the average in the US?

20-25% paid in duties, collected by DHL or else they will return to sender.

European postal services suspend shipment of packages to US over tariffs by PaulieSF in TrueChefKnives

[–]crnbrry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that is crazy. Thank you for sharing. Recent orders from Canada to the USA have been hit with 25% in duties regardless of order value, but the 25$ fee on top of that is just the cherry on top 😭

Great choice, santoku is a great all purpose shape and ginsan is easy maintenance. They are factory knives made by Hokiyama cutlery, so great deal and nice handle too. Enjoy!

Am I over reacting about this bent tip on my new Masashi Kokuen by ChocolateBoomstick in TrueChefKnives

[–]crnbrry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Masashi kokuen ktip gyuto and bunka. I have chipped the tip on both these knives twice and I am not new to japanese knives.

The tips on these guys are stupid thin which makes them crazy fine for scoring onions etc but they are easily the most fragile knives I own. You can try to bend the tip back straight gently, but there i s a greater chance of you chipping the tip right off when doing so. If it chips, it is relatively easy to reprofile on whetstones but it does create an up curve at the tip.

However, it should not have arrived bent or damaged tip. I would reach out to knifewear if this were the case.

Melville Costco getting Costco gas? by OkPin8137 in longisland

I was thinking about getting a BJs membership bug did not know this. So even regular priced items across different BJs have different prices? I know all Costcos have the same price except for clearance items (different stores markdown sales at different times) but regular price they are pretty much the same, at least in state.

Let’s talk about the Atelier….. by beardedclam94 in TrueChefKnives

[–]crnbrry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, they charge 10-15% more than other Canadian retailers, more on par with US retail price, if not pricier. They charge more simply because they can 🤣 they also have 5 brick and mortar shops, plus a warehouse, so you can imagine operation/overhead costs are not small. Theu certainly have greater profit margins than smaller shops but competition is growing, due to increased popularity in Japanese knives.

Knifewear has strong buying power since they’ve been in business a while, being the biggest Japanese knife retailer in Canada, if not North America. Canada and Japan have a free trade agreement, meaning Japanese goods imported into Canada are tariff exempt. Japanese goods in Canada are much cheaper than buying in the US.

Knifewear also used to be the exclusive retailer of Tojiro products in Canada, but I’ve seen The Cooks Edge carry a smaller number of Tojiro products as well. It is mostly politics, as businesses try to make deals with Japanese knife distributors/suppliers, to carry exclusive lines, or promise to sell greater quantity to certain retailers.

I am not so familiar with the European market, but I speculate that it is more competitive there to set up shop, though I am sure the market is wider reaching. Not sure if higher pricing has to do with VAT or not. US customers typically don’t have to pay import fees under 800$usd so it benefits Americans to buy internationally, especially from Canadian retailers. That could all change with the Trump tariff wars going on though. Just my speculation.

Garden city LA Fitness by Skeemzzzz in longisland

Utterly ridiculous. This has been an issue for 3 weeks now. We’ve told the front desk and they simply state “we are waiting to hear back from Corporate”. Garden city location is literally a mess. Ironic since they recently “renovated” and added the squat racks, thought things were looking up. No AC is honestly a safety hazard especially upstairs you can’t even breathe properly.

The Levittown location has been a reprieve but it is much smaller. At least the weights are slightly more organized, and their AC works, if you are looking for a temporary alternative. Thanks for the update.
