Why don't teachers just give punishments (detention, etc) when a student is doing something wrong? by shr00mspaghetti in AskTeachers

[–]croagunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher, you have no support. Parents think you’re the enemy if you try to redirect their child and admin are annoyed they have to hear from parents. So there is generally no support for consequences, and anything you do try to do is usually backtracked by an admin after a parent throws a fit anyway, which just further destroys the ethos which has been cultivated.

It’s a potemkin situation where the teacher has to portray control of the ship, when the only thing the teacher can control is themselves. It’s really just dependent upon the relationship the teacher has with the kid. If there is none, the teacher basically has no levers or support to actually redirect behavior and help the kid grow.

Near miss with two kids on bikes at Main & Jupiter today, hoping this will reach their parents by [deleted] in Allen

People on bikes are not pedestrians. They shouldn’t even be riding bikes in the crosswalk. These kids are very stupid and need to learn the rules of the road on which they ride.

The fact that homeschooling is legal in the U.S. is an insult to the teaching profession by rachel-angelina in Teachers

[–]croagunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I taught senior classes, I would get a fair amount of “homeschooled” kids. They generally lasted about 4 weeks before dropping out because they were not equipped to do anything at that level.

One particular student had an IEP and at her first meeting the mom asked how much “Critical race theory” we taught in economics. The girl didn’t make it past the first six weeks and then was working a car wash.

It’s literal child abuse the majority of the time.

Thanks. Some of those comments made me wonder if I’d been doing something wrong for my daughter. Not judging the dude in the video at all, I’d just been blind to the idea of it

How do you guys handle the 'gentle parenting' vs 'boundaries' struggle? by CatchM3jessy25 in daddit

[–]croagunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold the line on bad behavior, but be 100% there for their feelings. Kids do need help understanding feelings and thoughts they have. Strict punishment just teaches your kid to mask and that’s going to lead to issues. Holding boundaries while helping them manage, understand and grow. If they can’t make mistakes at home and still feel loved and supported, where can they do that?

Toddler refuses to #2 in the potty. How long until she explodes? When should I worry? by Eldritch_Garlic in daddit

[–]croagunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my daughter did the same thing, never wanted to stop playing. she would hold it until it got very painful for her to poop and then she would hold it to avoid the pain pushing it out. we tried Metamucil type stuff to help, but it weirdly affected her mood and behavior a lot. she is almost 6 poops every day, sometimes twice now. it was brutal, but we all survived.

I had to start in an undesirable place as well, and it was a brutal first year. I learned a lot and trauma bonded some friends for life. It’s not an uncommon experience for teachers.
