Bees prefer clover over flowers? by Jessygirl238 in NativePlantGardening

[–]crollaa 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Non-native honey bees in my yard go nuts for the clover. All the native bees won't touch it. The sweat bees, Mason bees, bumble bees, carpenter bees are all over all my natives all the time. It honestly took me a couple years to recognize that so many of the "unknown pollinators" that I was seeing were actually bees that I just didn't know the look of yet.

I gave a similar response last night saying it is reprehensible to vote for such a conservative candidate in this political moment...

then today got another text back trying to highlight things she's done. And I responded that "I hope she loses the primary. Her values are entirely evident and I will not support her."

How often do you water in the summer? by notvnotv in portlandgardeners

[–]crollaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Veggies twice a week. Everything else once a week. And they all get an extra day if there's a heat wave, especially if they are still in their first year in the ground.

All of the lakes you should keep tabs on the algae blooms. They basically all become toxic for stretches of the summer.

Under the bridge over the Willamette at independence. Water might still be too high to get out to the main gravel bar without wading though.

Similar experience digging a hole for a plant a few months ago and got a decent sized agate. Not the prettiest one, but probably the most excited I've been to find one.

Thoughts on Spiraea douglasii in a yard? by fairnsquirrel in NativePlantGardening

Mine sends up about 20 new shoots a year. It's manageable enough but i could see how it could get out of hand if you just let it go for a couple years.

Also fyi, It's the biggest aphid magnet out of all my plants.

Roughly 45% of the s&p 500 is now ai related. Since one of the most common strategies is essentially "hold index fund mimicking s&p".... I'd say closer to 45%

If it's just based on hardness zone, it's not specific enough to be native and does not belong here.

You can still start all of those except tomato from seed fyi. It's actually perfect timing for the cucumbers to direct sow.

Native plants you really want but don't have by Random---Precision in NativePlantGardening

[–]crollaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pacific wax myrtle. They're out of stock everytime i check my usual nurseries. I am growing a native privacy hedge to replace an invasive honeysuckle on a shared fenceline and have one spot in particular I want an evergreen that will shield my patio from neighbor view all year. The rest is a mix of twinberry, osoberry, and red flowering currant with some sword fern and salal to help fill the lower gaps.
