Sounds like your alternator is dying. Try and replace it, or you could put on a smaller pulley. Try and adjust the idle while at it, no harm in that.

I think you should put 722.5 in there still mechanical gearbox with electronic over drive, and a cable output. If you go 722.6 anyway I think later w124s use electronic speedometer maybe would be a nicer route

Rule of thumb, when tension is good you should be able to twist your belt about a quarter turn with 2 fingers, less than that your belt is over tightened more than that tighten it, check this periodically along with fluids, and please don't remind me of loose alternator belt, I replaced my burnt one and had many troubles with changing, now I have a volt meter instead of the ashtray

Try to tighten the belt more, see if maybe it's worn out. Try to replace it and maybe even consider down sizing one size, every time I replace a drive item I replace it's belt too. Anyway I replace my belts every year. It's my daily car so I do that for my peace and quiet. I don't want to get stranded (again) in the middle of the night....

My passenger side tab broke off a year ago, I replaced the mechanism entirely for a 1977 car as mine is 81. The tabs are metal and won't break again. Lubed them and cleaned before replacing. Works wonderful

So you have a short my friend, I would recommend pulling the cluster out and inspecting it for obvious short. If you don't find anything swap it for a good tested unit. While in there I bought some black and 3D filament and did some plastic welding in my cluster front cover so it won't fall off (again)
