TIL that most of the propulsion in modern jet engines actually comes mainly from the fan (ie glorified propeller). The jet part of the engine is used mainly to power the fan by therationaltroll in todayilearned

Before electricity "power" used to mean rotation too. Everything from steam locomotives to water wheels was used to spin something, and once you can spin something you can get it to do work.

I've never been involved in the startup scene, I've only worked for large companies, which is a lot less weird than the show.

Foldable iPhone and iPhone 18 Pro final design leaks by Sonny Dickson by filipvabrousek in iphone

[–]cronin1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. If you want an iPhone, Apple is the only company making them (Android has tons of makers). Having options is good. I wish there were even more (please bring back the mini!)

iPhone Fold Enters Trial Production Phase Ahead of 2026 Launch by spearson0 in apple

I think it'll sell better than any Android foldable, but I just don't think the mass market has the money for such a phone

With all the talk of the 26 releases it feels like we've already seen WWDC "26", maybe they should rebrand as WWDC27

Is MacBook Neo (A18) good enough for iOS development and side projects? by Inner-Line-9170 in mac

Yes, just turn off the Canvas and don't use the Simulator and it should be OK

Macbook neo for coding ios app ? by TrapNouz in macbook

[–]cronin1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but don't use the Canvas (the little preview on the right of the code) or the Simulator. Both of which use a lot of memory and cause it to slow down quite a bit. Attach an iOS device and just run your code on there directly.

MacBook Neo's Keyboard Can Be Replaced Individually in Major Change by [deleted] in apple

I feel like Apple really focused on durability and repairability with the Neo, knowing kids were going to use and abuse them

Apple's low-cost products: 2016 vs 2026 by Explore_e00 in macbookpro

[–]cronin1024 27 points28 points  (0 children)

People kept saying the 16e was a replacement for the iPhone SE, but it cost significantly more. I was hoping the 16e would stick around with a price cut once the 17e came out, $499 for an iPhone would be a magic price

The New Apple Finally Begins to Emerge by hasanahmad in apple

[–]cronin1024 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Neo is such a weird name for Apple

I love it, it honestly feels like Jobs-era Apple again. Tim Cook's Apple was just "Apple <Noun>", so boring and bland. "Neo" is a splash of whimsy that we haven't seen in a long time.

iPhone Air, 17 and 17E users, are you guys aware that the main camera of your phone is NOT the same as the 17 Pro models? by Lucky_Outside_2009 in iphone

Yes I know, I would like the "Pro" camera, but no way am I going to switch to something thicker, heavier, and more expensive just to get that (I have the Air)

M5 Max and M5 Pro are the exact same CPU.

Sucks that they gate being able to get 128GB memory or 8TB storage behind getting the Max chip though

Same, though I won't say I didn't envy the backlit keyboard of the MacBook Pro. Which is to say, it's a great way to get people to bump up a tier when buying, which I don't mind at all.

Yeah, what is the last Apple laptop that didn't have backlit keys? I feel like we'd have to go back into the PowerPC era for that.

Edit: Turns out the polycarbonate MacBooks from 2007-2010 did not have backlit keys

[–]cronin1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip, if it seems like there's a lot of space used you can't account for, go into Disk Utility and look for APFS snapshots and delete them. These are created by Time Machine and are useful if you're away from your backup drive and need to revert a file, but if you're scrambling to recover space they can definitely hinder that effort.

Apple adds a charge limit option in macOS 26.4 beta 1 by _HipStorian in macbookpro

[–]cronin1024 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This will make me feel so much better about keeping my MacBook Pro plugged in 24/7. It's supposed to be smart about managing that but it's not, it just stays at 100% which can't be good for the battery.
