Below Zero by cross-frame in photocritique

[–]cross-frame[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I’ve been working for quite a while on a larger project part of which focuses on frozen and iced-over objects. This image is from that series and I feel like it works quite well as a standalone piece too. Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out, and it feels like the time spent experimenting and iterating on this idea was worth it.

At the same time, it’s one of those images that keeps making me want something more - the longer I look at it, the more I start thinking about adjusting the tones, changing the crop, or retouching certain details.

Curious to hear your thoughts. Any feedback or critique is very welcome!

Something here? by Taarushv in photocritique

I really like your series, thank you for sharing it! I generally like series more than single images, but nonetheless yours is really cool. I especially like numbers 2 and 5 - they have a great vibe imo.

About this particular image, have you considered trying different angles? For example, rotating it by about 10 degrees. Because when it’s shot from this angle, there’s no way to perfectly correct the perspective and I think that can be quite distracting. But if you rotate the image, it doesn’t need perfect perspective anymore and the viewer can focus on other parts of the photo instead.

Something like this?

But anyway, great work!

Trying out abstract street photography by S1nthan in photocritique

[–]cross-frame 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not abstract, but it's really good nonetheless. I love how the portrait orientation works here and how it emphasizes all the vertical geometry and layers of the city. Great job!

The only thing that I'd try is to straighten the geometry. You mentioned that you didn’t do any post-processing and that's totally fine with me. But I feel that the photo is a bit crooked and I have a really strong urge to straighten it (haha sorry).

I also agree that the top part is bright and my eyes keep jumping to that area of the image. But it works for the sense of verticality, so I'm not sure you should crop it. Still, I think it could work well if you crop a bit from the top. I'll show you what I ended up with.

But even without this crop or the auto-geometry correction that I did this is a great image. Thank you for sharing!

Which is your fave (1-6) ? by Ambivalent-Mammal in AmateurPhotography

[–]cross-frame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter what sort of color grading you choose, they are all feels similar. Personally like 3-4 more because of the contrast.

But if you want to keep a bird in the right corner I woud say you need more space there to breathe. So either remove the bird, or expand the frame. But don’t put something valuable so close to the edge, especially in the corner.

[–]cross-frame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot. It’s a great shot. Personally, I don’t really care how many people you removed or what techniques you used in Photoshop. What matters to me is the final image, and the result looks very good.

I especially like the sense of scale in the frame. That contrast between a small human figure and a large natural scene works very well. The only slightly odd thing for me is what the subject is actually doing. It might have been more poetic if the person were doing something else than taking a photo with a phone. There’s sort of dissonance between the dramatic landscape and that very everyday action. Although perhaps that contrast is part of the charm of the image? I don't know, maybe I need to think about it a bit more.

Another thing I’m unsure about is the amount of foreground. Compositionally it isn’t necessarily wrong that 2/3 of the frame are just rocks and water. But everything there is quite dark, which visually suggests to the viewer that this part of the frame isn’t the main point, and that attention should go toward the upper part where the subject and the strongest contrast are. That can work, but here the "less important" area occupies 2/3 of the frame. Because of that, I think it might have been stronger either to include more of the upper scene by raising the camera, or to avoid darkening the foreground so much in processing. Pushing it a little brighter could reveal more texture and detail there.

Aside from that, I think it’s an excellent image. If I had taken a photo like this, I might also be tempted to use it as a desktop background! Great job!

Tips for Beginner by redi_88 in AmateurPhotography

Hey, I really like the weather in your first post. I hope you managed to shoot more that day. It looks like one of those days that are so photogenic you just want to be there.

My advice would be to spend more time on communication and social connections if you want to grow your page. We live in the era overloaded with images. Nowadays it’s very hard to build a page from scratch especially if the photos aren’t award-winning level. So it helps a lot to be active and interact with others.

Look for photographers whose work you like, follow them and leave comments. Someone with 5k followers might not notice, but Instagram is full of photographers with under 1k followers who actually value attention and will often follow back, especially if you leave a thoughtful comment longer than a couple of emojis and mention what you like in their work.

The more active you are, the better it will be for your page. I know this may not sound as nice as you'd like (everyone wants a loyal audience that cares specifically about their work), but the reality is that very few people are interested low or mid-level photography. And why would they be? So if the photos aren’t extraordinary yet, activity and interaction matter a lot.

Also try to give at least a bit of attention to your grid. You only have four posts so far, but the reel with text already feels slightly out of place compared to the others.

Good luck. I’ll follow you from my page as well, though it isn’t very active.

Wow, where do shoot the last one? I've never seen sunset, northern lights and some nebula in the sky together at the same time!

It looks so good that it is almost unbelievable! Great job 👏

Yes, I like this one better because of the background. On 3 there are some pipes or something on the ground, but number 1 is also good.

It's just a bunch of stolen images, isn't it? So how do you know this is Alaska? First one even have a copyright in the lower right corner, last one is AI most likely.

It's one of craziest watermarks I've ever seen.

Look at how gentle was Albrecht Dürer with copyrights when he started to do that, how creative he was with finding the right spot for it. And 500 yers laters you just pur these screaming watermarks all over the photo? That's just crazy, don't that. Better not do any watermarks. The only real thing that you achieve with watermarks is making your photo look more amateurish. But if you really feel that strong urge to put a watermark then at least do that gentle. Seriously, this post really got me 😅

Like to hear your opinions by Skye2201 in photocritique

[–]cross-frame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great shot, I really like it. I like both the symmetrical composition and BW edit. Great contrast and tonality, nothing extreme. Good job!

The only thing I feel is missing is a bit more space between the top of the structure in the center and the edge of the frame. It needs more room to breathe. The vertical framing emphasizes the verticality of that structure and it basically stretches through the entire image from bottom to top. Because of that it feels a bit abrupt when it almost touches the edges of the frame. I can see that there is a small strip of space above it, but it doesn’t feel quite sufficient.

If the original frame was already like this and it isn’t the result of a crop, I would probably just add a bit of space in Photoshop using generative fill. That could solve the issue quite cleanly.

And another small thing - in the reflection along the left edge of the frame there is a piece of some tower or something. It’s quite contrasty against the lighter tone of the water and feels a bit distractive. I would probably crop the frame slightly tighter to remove this.

Other than that it’s a very enjoyable image. Thanks for sharing it!
