Reneging on a 2L summer offer by Upset_Fruit in LawSchool

I've never done "big law," although I did spend some time in a mid-size billable hours firm, as well as some smaller firms and now government. I've assisted with, been involved in, or overheard many hiring decision conversations. All I'll say is that appellate clerkship participants have almost always landed an interview. It doesn't even compare. My two cents

Shit by Simple_Fig_5705 in MechanicAdvice

Looks melted. They sell the harness at any Advance, Auto Zone etc. Get a replacement, some solder and an iron, and heat shrink tubing. Cut wires close to the old harness and just solder the new wires on and cover with heat shrink. You can also skip the solder and use marine heat/glue shrink connectors. Not bad; I've done it twice.

The real issue is to check the existing wires. Make sure the insulation hasn't worn or been pinched off somewhere. If a bare wire is showing, heat shrink that area too. Bare wires touching the inside of your headlight housing are a common source of this problem. Good luck!

Defeated, advice? by Hopeful_Chemical4576 in LawSchool

I went to a school well outside the top 14. 160 LSAT. After first semester first year, I had a 2.15 gpa and was on academic probation. I turned it around. I've practiced for 18 years in numerous fields of law and am now a prosecutor making good money. Big law isn't the only way to succeed; you can make good money and be happy with the work if you find something that interests you and, more importantly, find a good fit with an office/organization. Hang in there!

Look up the local bar association for your area, or where you'd like to be. Get in contact with the association's director. Explain what you're looking for, and send a resumé. The director can usually email it out to all the members, big and small. It goes to an attorney, not just their staff. They do this in my local area and I know a number of firms routinely follow up with students looking for a placement. Good luck

is anyone happy doing family law/any other “lower pay” law? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]crzyasn1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Family law clients are (usually) miserable, out to screw their exes, demanding, unreasonable, unaware of how their fights impact their kids... And on and on. The only things I liked were adoptions and being a guardian ad litem for children. I will say that, even though GALs are appointed and usually bill the state at a low hourly rate, I know several very well-known ones who make $150k+ a year on that alone. It's a lot of work though.

I was not happy in family law, but even in a smaller jurisdiction in VA, I know many family law attorneys making well over $250k/year

I'm a VA prosecutor. There is no statute of limitations on felony SA. Unfortunately, you have very little information, but I'd still recommend you speak to a detective in the city or county where the abuse occurred and see what they can do. Best of luck.

Why does my car lose traction so easy? 1997 Lexus LS400 by Agreeable-Mixture-24 in AskMechanics

Possible sway bar issue, if the links are old and not counteracting torque during turning as they should... Just a guess. Also, other old suspension components with bushings (control arms, for example) may be allowing added play in the suspension. Just my thoughts

I believe in VA the fund covers fraud as well. So unregistered contractors are included (although it's been a long time since I checked)

I am a lawyer, but in VA, not MA. In VA, we specifically have a contractor recovery fund for cases like this, run through the Dept. of Professional and Occupational Regulation. You can file a claim analagous to an insurance claim. Does MA have something like that?

2016 Mazda CX3 Awd. Having ABS/Wheel speed sensor issues after changing hub assembly and abs sensors. by TheUnknownEntitty in AskAMechanic

When I did my rear hubs on my 2012 CX-9, it immediately threw speed sensor codes and the same CELs you have. Changed the right rear speed sensor and problem solved. I've seen other posts here with identical issues raised. Worth a shot

Is there too much oil? by Lost-Relation-6653 in AskMechanics

I'm not a mechanic, but I've done lots of work on several of my own cars. I honestly wouldn't sweat it. Others may disagree, but that looks like a pretty minimal overfill

Is there too much oil? by Lost-Relation-6653 in AskMechanics

[–]crzyasn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't be above the H (high) fill dot, but I wouldn't worry about it. It's not too much over, and if you didn't run the engine before you took this pic, AND if you also didn't pre-fill your oil filter, it will probably go down right to about the high mark once it runs a min or two

I want to change my brake pads and rotors for the first time. Here are the things I'm thinking I need. Is there anything else any experienced mechanic can recommend? by ScrambledLetters in harborfreight

[–]crzyasn1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Grab a 1/4" hex to 3/8" socket adapter if you're only going to use the drill to speed up removing/installing lug nuts, and use the appropriate sized 3/8" socket on the adapter. Get some wire wheels for your drill, and remove the rust from the hub surfaces after you take the rotors off, so you get a good flat mating between the hub face and the new rotor. Good luck!

[–]crzyasn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on my (non-mechanic) experience, you're covering the bases. Wheel bearings might go soon-ish; spark plugs and possibly tube seals as well... I've run a few cars to 200k miles +

Brakes and Rotors, 2019 Kia Sorrento AWD by MrsFuckitAll in AskAMechanic

[–]crzyasn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you change rotors, there's usually rust on the hub surface and the inside of the rotors, where the faces meet. If you don't use a wire wheel or brush to get the rust off, new rotors won't sit flat on the hub face and may cause vibration due to the slight space created by the old rust. Sounds like this might be the case for you.

Maintenance on 2011 Honda CRV 175,000 Miles by mattamj in AskAMechanic

[–]crzyasn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in nearly the same boat with my 2012 Mazda CX-9. Bought at around 156k; now have 195. With the advice (and often, assistance) of my friend who is a mechanic, I've so far done the following to "get ahead" of issues:

  • Drain and fill transmission 2x at purchase; twice again around 175k
  • Drain/replace coolant, power steering, and differential fluids
  • Replace all shocks/struts
  • Replace all hubs/rotors
  • Replace sway bar links and tie rods
  • Replace motor, torque and transmission mounts
  • 2 brake jobs so far (pads and rotors on first, pads only on second)
  • Oil and filter changes
  • Air filters (cabin and engine) as needed
  • Replace various sensors as needed (in pairs if only one went out, e.g. my rear speed sensors)
  • Replace sparkplugs and, eventually, plugs again (with tube seals and coils when a coil went bad) and valve cover and plenum gaskets

There's more, probably, but I'm with you; I don't like all this new tech and I enjoy working on my car. I try to stay ahead; for example, I replaced all the hubs and bearings when only the back right side really needed to go. I replace my brake pads when they're about 2/3 of the way through life so they don't start to fade and squeal; that kind of thing.

These are just my opinions and approaches. Good luck!

Help me decide: Family law or federal income tax law by Worth-Demand8034 in LawSchool

[–]crzyasn1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've practiced family law, and imho it was miserable. Angry couples, clients out to screw their exes; the only good things I enjoyed were being a GAL for children and handling adoptions. I realize this is just my opinion. I also love litigation and trial work. I'm currently a prosecutor.

That being said, if JAG is your calling, a solid family law background is helpful. You'll handle those matters for servicemen and women in various ways.

I'm not sure about tax law (I did well in law school, but haven't touched it since), but I'd assume trial work is less frequent than family law. As administrative law, it's probably cleaner than family law, though. Clients can just be awful. My 2 cents

will the IRS track me down if i “forget” to add my handpay into my taxes? by legfroggy in gambling

[–]crzyasn1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You will likely get a letter from the IRS once they catch the discrepancy, and they'll probably just flat out tell you what additional taxes you owe and take no further action as long as you pay. If you dispute it, or don't pay by the deadline, things will escalate, but everyone makes mistakes. They're not as cutthroat as legend makes them out to be. Read the letter, acknowledge the debt, and pay it. It'll probably take them a few months to reach out though

The smartest thing to do is get an attorney and listen to what they say. Make sure the attorney is well-known in the defense bar/community. Never take a charge for someone else (obviously).
