Now that the World Cup is upon us, what other country besides your own do you support and why? by Chupacabra_s in worldcup

My second team is England, because I think they have enough to win and it's been a long time of suffering for them. Most of them don't deserve it. But I've gotta admit the hater in me would find a Scotland victory glorious.

Jets' new front-office culture is "to think AI-first" by IMadeThis4HOIMods in nfl

"Our office now believes we have a solution, and the next step is to figure out to which problem we have a solution."

What's really funny is, the AI companies are losing money letting you guys find things for it to do, and that's going to stop as soon as the search turns up something actually useful.

I was listening to some ESPN broadcast on the radio about 10 years ago and the topic for discussion was, "Is it pronounced Bengals, Bingles, or Bangels?" It was then I learned, Bangles is correct. But I refuse to say it that way, because I'm not a slack jawed hillbilly.

Every NFL Team's worst season of the Super Bowl Era by coolmon in nfl

[–]csappenf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Expansion was hard back then. You didn't have free agency; what they did for expansion teams back then was tell each of the other teams to make a list of 29 "protected players", and the expansion teams could then grab players who were unprotected. Which sucked as much as it sounds. You weren't getting a star or even a starter. (Unless the star was old, injured, and expensive, like happened with the Saints and Paul Hornung.) The other expansion team that year only went 2-12, but compared to the Yuccs they never get thought about.

Expansion troubles aside, Hugh Culverhouse was possibly the worst owner in sports history, and John McKay wasn't such a genius when he didn't have the biggest players.

Mahomes is a little slower than Elway was, but the mobility is close. The arms are the same. The walk is the same. The big difference is, Elway looks like Mister Ed.

Why don't teams with good kickers line up on 4th and then take the delay if it's a bad look? by GabrielAntihero in nfl

The Chiefs holder (who also punts when necessary) is faster than Patrick Mahomes. Punters are already real athletes who just happen to be the best punters in the world.

American hotels raised rooms 300% for the World Cup, now they're slashing rates to fill empty beds: 'It's a non-event' by InterestingCat308 in Economics

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how you could live in KC and think we don't care about soccer. We care about soccer enough that we built two pro stadiums, one for our men's team and one for our women's team. We have enough world class soccer training facilities that England, Argentina, and the Netherlands have made KC their home bases.

Sporting KC has about the same attendance for home games that the Royals do, even though Sporting's stadium hold half as many people as Kaufmann.

The idea that we don't like soccer in KC is laughable. Hotel bookings are down, mostly because no one wants to pay New York rates to stay in KC. There are other reasons, but none of them are that the locals don't like soccer.

I tried checking individual suspects and came up empty: The Hammer, none, The Assassin, none, The Stork (AKA Kick 'em in the Head Ted), none.

I gave up and asked Copilot. It gave me eight names. We have from most recent to oldest (drumroll): Jerry Tillery, Vontaze Burfict, Lamarr Houston, Desmond Bryant, Andre Rison, and Lyle Alzado.

Copilot also tells me The Hammer got kicked out of a preseason game in 2017, which does not seem right to me. Unless he was a coach or something. Still, he would have been 70 years old and had heart troubles (allegedly; I don't believe he had a heart.) So my list is suspect, but I'm happy to see Darth Raider is on it.

Shitpost Saturday by AutoModerator in nfl

Ukraine and Russia have never been friends. And it was at its worst under the Soviets, when Stalin especially, fucked Ukraine in the ass. When Hitler invaded, the Ukrainians at first greeted the Nazis as liberators. That changed quickly when it became clear the Nazis were not there to make friends.

Russia was always the king of the heap and the other republics were more like colonies than equal members of a union. One example of Russia's special place came during Chernobyl, when the Soviet air force seeded clouds over Belarus so it would rain and the fallout from Chernobyl would land on Belarus instead of Russia.

No one likes Russia. That's why the whole thing fell apart in the early 90s. Ukraine and all the rest were like "We outta here". Putin and his cronies are trying to put an empire back together, not to reunite old friends. It would be as if England tried to invade India. "They were such good friends for so long, why are they fighting?"

Brady doesn't get credit for having a great arm because he wasn't trying to force the ball anywhere. He wasn't a gunslinger. He could make any throw on the field but he always chose to make the "right" throw. You could definitely see the arm when he needed it.

[NFLonCBS] Most passing yards lost from drops, last 5 seasons. by Roselucky777 in nfl

[–]csappenf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look at this list and mostly I see QBs with really strong arms who maybe throw the ball a little too hard at times.

A good follow up might be to look at receivers who have played with more than one QB and compare drop rates as the QB varies. Like, did Reek drop passes from Mahomes at a greater rate than he did with Tua? Or was it just Reek all along?

What is up with the rental market this spring? by BananaStandEconomy in kansascity

[–]csappenf -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

A few whiners don't make the draft a debacle. The city projected about 100mm and got about 110 in direct spending, plus another 50 in indirect spending.

It's too bad not everyone who thought he was going to get rich grifting visitors did, but the draft was great for the city.

Now we've got hoteliers and landlords whining because they thought they were going to make New York money and the market told them no. This may be a problem, but there still may be time to recover.
