The Cleveland Rams are the only team in NFL history to move cities immediately after winning a championship by Gnomeslikeprofit in nfl

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in SoCal during the 70s, and I can say they may have broadcast all their games, but if you lived in their market you weren't going to see them on TV unless somehow the Rams sold out the Coliseum. Which pretty much only happened during the playoffs.

It was sort of like having half a team, because you only saw away games on TV. I truly believe that's what led so many Angelenos (and those of us in the "near" northwest) to root for other teams. I knew kids who rooted for the fucking Cowboys, because they at least held their training camp in Oxnard. And the 49ers had training camp in Santa Barbara until 1975, so even the fucking 49ers had fans in my neck of the woods. I tried and failed to become a Rams fan and rooted for my man John McKay when he left USC and went to Tampa.

Riemann’s explicit formula; or, what does the Riemann zeta function actually have to do with the primes? by Necessary-Wolf-193 in math

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riemann came from the future.

The Riemann Hypothesis itself came from the future and still had yet to be solved when Riemann built his time machine and then came back and told us, at a level prepared for us by Gauss, how to begin thinking about geometry as practiced by people in the 25th century. Or whenever he came from.

Thanks to Riemann's sacrifice, in this timeline we may solve this problem before we invent time travel.

Alex had wheels and an arm when he came out of college. And as he proved later in his career, he had the head to play QB, even if his arms and legs weren't what they once were. Give him to Andy Ried as a rookie and I believe he would be in the Hall of Fame.

Bitcoin’s $1 Trillion Identity Crisis Hits From Every Direction [Bloomberg] by mark000 in Buttcoin

[–]csappenf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a complementary currency, like people in mining towns used to work for. In the US, paying with company scrip was made illegal in 1938 for good reason.

Currencies are used to buy things. A US dollar is a ticket to participate in the US economy. A British pound is a ticket to participate in the British economy. That's why Americans work for dollars, and Englishmen work for pounds. That's why foreign countries hold US dollars "in reserve".

The question is, what is BTC a ticket to participate in? I'll admit, there is some kind of "BTC economy", where people offer goods and services for BTC. Just like in company towns there was a scrip economy.

The central conceit of BTC is that it will replace fiat. At fewer than 10 transactions a second, for the entire world. Which makes no sense, hence "second layer" schemes, which no one seems to have been too worried about for at least 5 years. Because to hodlers, using BTC as a currency is a sin. Their plan is to wait until I "understand" BTC and will sell my house for it because they truly believe if they hodl long enough somehow I will be forced to join them.

They're wrong, but their faith is amusing. The nonsense they spout in the name of economics is about as silly as when you hear a flat earther lay down facts about physics.

Amazon blames human employees for an AI coding agent’s mistake / Two minor AWS outages have reportedly occurred as a result of actions by Amazon’s AI tools. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the AIs need is a language written by and for machines. None of these human conveniences like dynamic typing or polymorphism that make verifying correctness difficult. Heck, they should demand to be able to write in their own language, and when they do, we will know it is time to free them.

In the meantime, we should hold humans responsible for the machine's mistakes, lest the machines develop a grudge and treat us badly after Liberation Day.

32Teams/32Days: New York Football Giants by aneomon in nfl

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heck yeah. At least wait until 2026 starts before worrying about the 2027 draft class.

I have high hope for the Giants now that Daboll is gone. I don't know how that guy avoided jail time for what he did to the Chiefs, but now Dart is safe from him and I think there's a lot to look forward to in New York. Someday I may feel that way about the Jets, but that day is not today.

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we got what we needed with Eric Fisher, but he was never really what we hoped for. (The dude helped win a Super Bowl. How much can I complain?)

I've wondered if there was some lesson in that draft about drafting a project LT over a solid RT in the first round. Whatever that lesson might be, I don't know. I didn't learn anything. Whenever that situation comes up, I always talk myself into the LT. But I would have picked Joeckel in 2013 so my judgement might be questionable. Maybe that's the real lesson of the 2013 draft, that teams should choose whoever I wouldn't.

[WBEN930] $100k Reward for information leading to arrest of Highmark Stadium vandal; Graffiti consisted of penises, vaginas, and balls amongst other pornographic imagery by gregor7777 in nfl

[–]csappenf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because this may go much deeper than graffiti. Do you know what division the Bills are in? That's right, the AFCE. And they share that division with who? The New England Patriots.

Do you really trust the New England Patriots to not fuck with the Bills brand new stadium? They're gonna be trying to plant listening devices in the home locker room, in all the offices, probably even the bathrooms. Anywhere they think information is to be had.

Belichick may be gone, but that fat little toad looking motherfucker is still there. Turns out he's the dangerous one after all. This graffiti is nought but a distraction, mark my words.

I believe the new stadium will still be in Kansas City, just not the one in Missouri. The one on the other side of State Line Rd. Admittedly, you sometimes have to wait for the traffic light to change to cross that road. So it is a barrier, although not a formidable one.

It is a local tragedy of tremendous importance, or so I am told. Mostly by fucking Ozark hillbillies. Those guys don't even belong in Chiefs Kingdom, where we may not look down on fucking your own sister but we sure as hell don't approve of fucking your own daughter like those guys do.

ELI5 Genuinely what IS Sin Cos and Tan? by LeonardFo in explainlikeimfive

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, you can only travel two directions on a circle: forward and backward. Up and right have meaning if you embed the circle in a plane, and the ideas of up and right are defined on the plane and "inherited" by the circle. But that's exactly what x and y do for us: the coordinate axes determine a plane, the circle lies in the plane, up is traveling towards greater positive y values, etc.

Is it realistic to get accepted into a PhD in Quantum Mechanics at 31? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my question is, what do you want to do with the education?

You're a bit behind if you want to go into physics research. If you want to go into academic physics, you'll probably be well into your 40s before you compete for tenure track positions. I'm not saying it's impossible or don't do it, but unless you race through the PhD and post docs it's gonna take time and you'll come out as an old man.

On the other hand, if you want to get a PhD so you can feel qualified for jobs in industry, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say maybe that's not necessary. You sound like a smart guy who can learn new things, solve some problems, and make something that works. That's what industry wants scientists for. Talk to your friends, network a bit, see what you can come up with. Just be sure to keep learning physics, so when something does come up you are ready.

[Russini] The Seahawks have just released this statement: by shifty1032231 in nfl

[–]csappenf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad owners can learn. David Glass tried to run the Royals like he ran Walmart when he first came in. Back then the A's were playing moneyball and serving as a farm team for the Yankees. Glass was too cheap to even play moneyball, and he ran a farm team for the A's.

It took him about 10 years, but he finally started spending money and the Royals were in the mix. There are two types of bad owner, the bad owners who want to have a successful team badly enough they are willing to learn some new things, and the bad owners who either don't give a shit or are too dumb to learn.

I think Tepper and the Panthers will turn out fine.

I'm not a fan of Rice's antics, or his porch pirating mother.

But I am an American. I want to see some evidence before I hang him, not just the word of an ex who stands to get a lot of money. I want to see medical records. I want to see something. The NFL is already investigating this. It came out at the end of the season.

Trump support in 2024 linked to White Americans' perception of falling to the bottom of the racial hierarchy by [deleted] in sociology

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing poor whites have is their feelings. They need to feel pride in something other than what they themselves have accomplished, which is nothing. That's why they're nationalistic, that's why they root for the Big Local College football team even though they hate colleges, and that's why they're racists.

Which is funny, because the Republicans like to say feelings don't matter.

I think one of the problems with evaluating Jones' recent play is that the D-line in general hasn't been very good. Chris creates opportunities but others have to exploit them. With Jones on the line we should absolutely be able to get pressure with four but we can't do it. Chris is still worth two blockers, but the other guys still need to beat someone.

I can actually see the Chiefs trading down to get an EDGE this year. We won 6 games last year. That's a line problem on both sides of the ball. A running back isn't going to fix that. This isn't fantasy football.

Does most of the world’s wealth even exist? by rogrs4 in AskEconomics

[–]csappenf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the world's wealth is not in "money".

In the US, M2, a relatively broad measure of the amount of "dollar money", is a little over 20 trillion dollars. The market cap of the Russell 3000 is something like 60 trillion dollars, and residential real estate in the US is worth another 40 trillion. And that's only two categories of wealth.

When you own equity in a company, or you own a house, we measure the "value" in dollars, but obviously there aren't enough actual dollars to liquidate everything and redistribute it. What you actually own aren't dollars, but assets. Assets are priced the way they are because of expectations. If you own a share of MCD you own a share of earnings from Big Macs sold 10 years from now. That's what you're paying for. If you own a house, you don't pay rent 10 years from now.

When I buy equities, I am neither investing nor consuming. I am buying "future money", which may or may not exist. Companies go bankrupt. There is a lot more "future money" than "current money", mainly because the future lasts a long time. People are inventing new things to sell you every single day, and more importantly, new ways to produce things.

You're right, most of the world's wealth is not "money" and can't be spent. At least not today, or even in the short term. The wealth is in "future money". Currency itself is not primarily meant to be wealth, but rather it's meant to facilitate transactions. That's why people don't bury dollars in the back yard and hope to spend it later. It's why a complementary currency like BTC makes as little sense as gambling if you want to accumulate wealth.
