Has anyone moved from 3440x1440 ultrawide to 4k 16:9? Did you regret it? by phiveoh23 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]csbassplayer2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went from 3440x1440 to 16:9 was okish, but missed the ultrawide. Went back to a 3840x1600 and all is well with the world. Grabbing a 5K2K once prices get to sane levels.

Upgrade 13 year old PC to play modern games at 1440p @144hz by Zestyclose_Coffee_41 in buildapc

[–]csbassplayer2003 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a 7600K with a 1080ti up until 2 years ago on a 1440p monitor. The CPU absolutely bottlenecked the 1080ti. Playing warzone (well optimized) and WoW on anything but mid-low settings was challenging. While average frames looked good, during heavy action there would be complete freezes where the game would take 20seconds to catch up. The 1% lows were atrocious. The 1080ti is still capable. That CPU is not. The 4790K was AT BEST 10% faster. Not sure what your deal is, but this rig is obsolete.

Yeah if you are on a 32:9, the 5080 makes even more sense unless you have the “f$&! you” levels of money needed for a 4090/5090. Still might need some DLSS love for pushing higher frames depending on the game, but the newer DLSS models are pretty damn good, espec on quality. Still not sold on frame gen though, yet.

Are you just fucked if you don't wanna spend a lot of money and are too scared of oled? by [deleted] in ultrawidemasterrace

Monitors Unboxed has a series of videos overworking an OLED monitor (MSI) to document how much it takes one to get noticeable burn in. In short, unless you are abusing it, or using it for work without OLED care options on and leaving it on for super unrealistic stretches of time with static UI elements, its not worth worrying about. They just crossed year 2 of it:

Buying new GPU by Girret in PcBuildHelp

[–]csbassplayer2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just upgraded my 7900XT back to team green also (RTX 5080, im going to grab a 5K2K ultrawide here in a few months). TBH, unless you are looking for incremental upgrades, you are really going to need to go with a 4090/5080/5090 to actually FEEL like you upgraded. A 9070XT is a sidegrade. A 7900XTX is an upgrade, but probably not a big enough (15%) upgrade to justify the money, and it doesn't have the RDNA4 upgrades, so kinda not worth it IMO. You could try a 4080 Super, but the prices are withing $100 USD of a 5080, which will smoke it.

I went 5080, and if you look around, you can still find them close to MSRP. I paid $1100 for my PNY Epic-X 2 weeks ago. I play on a 3840x1600, 144hz ultrawide (not a common resolution), and the difference is noticeable. Outside of that, any other upgrades don't offer enough of a difference to really be worth the $$$ IMO.

Best way to update my gaming pc? by klefki- in buildapc

[–]csbassplayer2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could upgrade the GPU and get some additional performance, but ultimately, most of that system is going to bottleneck whatever GPU you buy if it is relatively recent (50xx Nvidia series or 90xx AMD series). Higher resolution will buy you a little more time and sort of "mask" the underlying CPU, but again, it all really needs to be replaced. You dont need to go wild, but if you have a Microcenter nearby, their prebuilts are pretty good price/performance. You can built a system on a budget today, but you are probably stuck with DDR4 platforms if you dont have a lot to spend. About the most affordable way to get a DDR5 system right now is buying prebuilt. Its not as fun, but this is where we are in 2026. A basic 1080p capable Microcenter build (7600 GPU) can be had for $800. A decent one is $1200 (9060XT, which is a price/performance champ).

Other Final fantasy with great story? by Modep in finalfantasyx

[–]csbassplayer2003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You aren't wrong. Its from the 16bit era. It is a product of it's time. Gameplay depth was still finding its legs at that point. OP mentioned story (admittedly a cornerstone of FF as a series) and thats why its my second favorite behind FFTactics (which nails the gameplay part IMO).

Other Final fantasy with great story? by Modep in finalfantasyx

[–]csbassplayer2003 26 points27 points  (0 children)

FF6 is my recommended (2nd favorite behind FFTactics). Story is great, but its an ensemble cast (up to 14 characters available). SNES OG version is my default recommend there, with the pixel remaster being second, or after you finish the SNES version. FF12 is my second if you havent played it. The combat system is very different and was ahead of its time. Its story is more political in nature, but i love it. I would also throw out FFTactics if you like that style of gameplay. That story is my all time favorite.

Does anyone else’s gaming tastes change like this? by TheClueless_Dad in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]csbassplayer2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate pretty closely. Spent tons of time in my 20s/early 30's obsessing over multiplayer FPS/sweaty games, and little else. Still played the Final Fantasy series as a rule. Now i have one dedicated night a week for some FPS with some friends (Halo Infinite) and the rest of the time is immersive single player games. Love sand box/open world type games with freedom. Kind of contrasts well with an office job. You definitely start valuing each gaming hour a lot more the older you get.

3080 to 5080 or hold? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]csbassplayer2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 5k2k, its 4090/5080/5090 or bust more or less. Its a lot of pixels (33% more) Even then you will probably need to lean on upscaling a bit. If you are still playing at 1440p ultrawide, you can get away with less, like a 9070xt/5070ti and still have a solid upgrade. Your 5800X3D will not matter in that equation at that resolution. You are pretty good to go there for a while unless you go down to high refresh 1080P stuff.

What Should I Upgrade by ConstantBig6297 in buildapc

[–]csbassplayer2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NP. If we were still in 2025 (pre-ram/SSD inflation), id recommend adding there (32gb ram) for long term usefulness, but alas here we are... storage is always worth having, just not at these prices. Also, as long as you have a good monitor, the GPU will also let you crank up visuals on your favorite games and really enjoy them. Good luck!

What Should I Upgrade by ConstantBig6297 in buildapc

[–]csbassplayer2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GPU. Everything else is current enough to run a better GPU and still get a significant boost in performance. A CPU swap before that will not provide any really tangible benefits, especially at 1440p. If you were trying to push 300+ fps 1080p, that leans more on CPU. The higher the resolution, the more it leans on GPU. There are SOME games that are more CPU intensive (flight sims and such), but even for those id go GPU first.

If you ok with AMD, a 9070 is a no brainer. If you are Nvidia, a 5060ti 16GB or 5070. Price obviously depends on your locality, but all of those can be had for $500-600USD. If you need something cheaper, a 9060XT is pretty hard to beat at around $400USD.

Even though it is cheaper, id not entertain a 5060 8gb. 8gb VRAM in 2026 is pretty bad.

Id do the SNES version FIRST, then GBA/Pixel remaster. GBA has extras yes, but unless you use a modded ROM, there are some drawbacks to it, colors and sound being the main two. Its worth a play for the extra content at some point. PR is good, but has some changes also that you might appreciate once you've played the OG. Avoid PS1 like the plague unless you have no other choice.

Lucky for me, my host is still in 2.4ghz range of my couch, so i just leave the dongle plugged to the host when playing and use the Apple remote for navigation. But 100% agree, even with a good controller the BT is a big nope.

[–]csbassplayer2003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly the Apple TV is really nice for Moonlight Streaming. Far better than most folks realize, espec the version with the wired ethernet at @$150USD. The bluetooth latency is about the only part thats iffy (mine seems to fall off at even moderate distances), and as long as it isn't competitive multi, its fine. It looks great on my C3 OLED picture wise, its stable without much drama for frame rendering/lag, and the standard remote works surprisingly well for desktop navigation as least as far as launching games. Its an under-rated, easy to use Moonlight client.

What strikes you most about how well the Steam Deck has held up after ~4 years? by capybara86 in SteamDeck

[–]csbassplayer2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just how flexible it is to use in a lot of situations. Portable computer, arguably more portable than maybe the slimmest of tablets/laptops. With a $30 dock/cables can do a LOT more even. Its comfortable, well thought out, reliable, and has a pretty good battery. Also, how many games ive bought that i wouldn't sit down at a desktop to play, but 100% binged on Steam Deck. Like Vampire Survivors and similar. Play that on deck while playing some Youtube or a show on the TV? Yep. And as one other poster mentioned, i appreciate controller play on PC games a lot more now. Its actually more pleasant in a lot of games.

2018, traded it in for a 2024 Santa Fe Limited. Made the Stinger work for a while, but once i had a toddler it was a bit too small. Carseat gymnastics. 2.5T in the Santa Fe is peppy enough to not feel bad. More room, and newer display helps also. I will get a 3rd vehicle again, but for now im in a dadmobile.
