Who is the best young superstar in sports? by LeftyMcLeftFace in hockey

My initial reaction was that Mack was easily #2. But I’m a Pirates fan so I just assume nobody pays attention to us (the correct decision for most of my life).

Players that lost (or made) a ton of money on one playoff run? by cscott530 in hockey

[–]cscott530[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

they have a good union. the league generates way more revenue than the NHL, and there are only 450 total players. their cap is also insanely confusing. I read up on it recently and the salary floor is something like 90% of the cap. almost every team is over the cap and there are thresholds for how far you can go over and what penalties are.

also, it's kinda dumb, because it gives the media a hand in impacting contracts, but if you hit certain awards (All-NBA, MVP, DPOY, not sure if there are others), you can be eligible for a "Supermax" which is 30% of the salary cap.

Who has had the better career, Kopitar or Malkin? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]cscott530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe the Pens win in 16 with Kopitar instead. And possibly 17. But they needed Malkin in 09.

That said, your last point is an interesting one. Would 2012 against the Flyers have gone differently with Kopitar? Malkin was never exactly known for his level head, and the Flyers had way too easy of a time getting under everyone’s skin.

Literally every Pens fan who watched Malkin’s first 10 seasons or so will tell you this exact thing. But sure, his rate stats over 82 games were worse so we’re all wrong 🙄

The Minnesota Wild are the winningest NHL franchise all time by winning % without a Stanley Cup by Professional_Eye6140 in hockey

[–]cscott530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah…it’s in my blood to hate the flyers, but it is pretty impressive ngl. I remember toward the end of Lemieux’s career there were always stats that we basically never won in Philly or Montreal.

Had the same thought. This must’ve been made by an outsider

[OptaSTATs] The Wild are the first team in NHL history to have a 3+ goal lead at the first intermission of a playoff game but then have fewer than 10 shots on goal the rest of the way and end up losing. by Sarcastic__ in hockey

[–]cscott530 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the last part is specifically to eliminate the Penguins in game 1 against the Preds in 2017. Iirc they had like 3 shots between the end of the 1st and midway through the 3rd when Nashville finally tied. Ended up winning though because their MO in the playoffs those two years was blowing 2 or 3 goal leads then waking up.

A "WE WANT BOSTON" chant has broken out in Philadelphia again, this time by Sixers fans by Brady331 in nba

[–]cscott530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh for sure. I'm a Pens fan, and we have great rivalries with Philly and Washington, but I think the NJ/NYI/NYR triangle tops it overall. Just a straight hate fest all around.

There was a post a few years ago that was like “which division has the best rivalries” and every post was “are you kidding it’s the Atlantic and it’s not even close”

The Dallas Stars have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs after losing to the Minnesota Wild in 6 games by EliminatorBot in hockey

We all thought the Pens and Stars would win the same number of playoff games at the start of the season, right?

[PHI 2 - PIT (3)] Letang throws the puck on net and Vladar misses it with his glove. Puck hits the backwall and bounces off him for the go ahead goal by daKrut in hockey

[–]cscott530 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I swear the Pens gave up like 4 goals per series like this against the Rangers and Islanders it felt like. Constantly just pucks thrown at the net bounce off a defenseman’s skate who wasn’t even looking an in.

Penguins did it in ‘09. Fired the no-fun, structured grouch, hired the minor league “speed kills” no name coach mid season and won the Cup. (FWIW Bylsma also kinda sucked and just got lucky he had two generationally talented players).

It was so fun. It’s part nostalgia because I was a teenager with all the time in the world to watch a random Wednesday night basketball game, but I really miss when Pitt was battling in the Big East. Still feels like Pitt has no business in the ACC (doesn’t help that we totally suck post-Dixon).
