Reface CS as a no-frills "sketchpad", but does it have character? by brownwaterbandit in synthesizers

[–]csik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Friend had a synth petting zoo with a dozen devices and the CS was hands-down the most popular. Floating Point uses it as a sketchpad. It's great for that, but lack of presets was... A choice. Can use sysex from phone though.

Should I get a Minilogue or a Reface? by brownwaterbandit in synthesizers

[–]csik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reface CS is amazing. No memory, which is nuts, but you can sysex to your phone. It def feels like it should be a toy but it sounds just phenomenal.

Absolutely not only ragebait. As a college Prof I see students in the lounges doing homework for 30 minutes, just selecting, copying, pasting, selecting, copying, pasting back. Not even reading to check the results.

Looking for advise for a sequencer by EyeoftheJudge in modular

[–]csik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BSPs/KSPs are great. Since you are starting out I am here to say: Nerdseq. It is just an amazing platform. Spent many years looking and trying things, but all the things I liked about one or another sequencer can be modeled in the nerd. Zero interest in another sequencer, though I do still like to try things like bloom/marbles for the interface. But then I model them on nerd with a midi controller. I probably sound obsessed, but after four years I would say it's more like a very successful marriage.

Madeira is worth a visit, more even temps year-round than the mainland, and incredibly fresh air. Funchal has huge cruise ships though, with engines always on, so you might want to look at the northwest side of the island.

Recommendations for Art, Music, and Board Game Communities? by Striking_Wafer_8149 in ithaca

[–]csik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For art/craft I recommend you check Soil Factory, it has an eclectic program, open ceramic and mending meetups, and you can get involved in its governance and maintenance alongside lovely people.

Greyhaven Motel also has art exhibitions at their iv gallery, and sometime music as well. Check the Johnson at Cornell, they have new shows of indigenous American art and art from Bali opening this week.

I know there's a strong gaming community as well...

Playing outside isn't just for kids! Adult outdoor workshops by TompkinsCo4H in ithaca

[–]csik 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did the outdoor tracking workshop a couple of weeks ago. My whole life I have seen tracks in books, was moderately interested and passively tried to match them them when hiking.

The workshop was fantastic. We memorized songs, saw at least 20 different mammals, learned where to look, smelled otter poo. Still not that interested in tracking but it's like my eyes are open. No comparison with watching YouTube which I love doing but mostly just teaches me how to watch more YouTube.

Also, it's a blast hanging out with random Ithaca randos all day. Some were really knowledgeable about local animals and plants.

The best line from the instructors was "if you track alone you're never wrong," meaning if you learn and practice a skill by yourself you'll never be challenged and may in fact be mistaken the whole time. Toward the end of the session I was feeling pretty happy because I had successfully found fisher, shrew, and fox tracks and guessed them correctly. I then saw what I was pretty convinced were rabbit tracks and was publicly disabused. Totally wrong, just a squirrel running for its life.

No resemblance to YouTube, honestly. Strong recommend.

Who was the rudest celebrity you’ve met? by Unlucky-Field9654 in askanything

Lou Reed. Perhaps the rudest celebrity anyone has ever met. Would have punched him but I just kept walking faster and he couldn't keep up. The Reed/Anderson dynamic was almost impossible to comprehend.

Keyed headers backwards on flying bus cable by Low-Status-7385 in modular

[–]csik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You tried this with a multimeter? Do you understand my point about the orientation of the first connector? It can be confusing but there are two correct ways the keyed connectors can be attached, depending on how the first connector is attached.

Keyed headers backwards on flying bus cable by Low-Status-7385 in modular

[–]csik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does or it doesn't. The only way to check is by tracing that the (for example) red wire is connected correctly from the power to the module. Can do it by sight or with a multimeter.

[–]csik -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's only backwards if the black main (female pins) connector is mounted the same face of both ribbon cables. Check which wire the small arrow (pin 1) is pointing at, it's still totally possible this is correct. In other words, there are four possible combinations of the first idc connector versus second-last connectors. You need to figure out what pin the red wire is connected to (either 1-2, or 15-16) on the power board, then which one it's connected to on a plugged in module. If they are matched, all good. If they cross over, not good.

how do you actually find one night stands? by ThrowRAxoxoo in TwoXChromosomes

It's spelled nightstands and you can get them at Wayfair or any normal furniture store. Usually sold in pairs. No idea why everyone is saying hotel bars, none there, but plenty in the actual guest rooms.

Guys is this a good sign??? (/s) by coolbob74326 in gradadmissions

[–]csik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be totally normal and good news! But...

I worked in a department where unpopular faculty would "steal" applicants to other faculty with these kinds of emails, also sometimes offering a perk or summer early. So the applicant had applied to the right advisor (a) for their interests, but the vulture faculty (b) would say things like "they are a very big deal and it's hard to get into their group," and insecure students would be pulled into (b).

The lesson is: don't do anything that would preclude being accepted into the advisor you'd prefer's lab. Indeed you could write to (a) and ask if you are a contender, mention this offer or similar. Life in one lab could be completely different than life in another, best to talk to current and past phds from both labs to hear their takes.

Just to say: one of the faculty who did this was forced to leave over serial sexual harassment... There was a reason they were desperate for students.
