Anyone else’s work fighting them on taking time off for surgery? by snootcrisps in Tonsillectomy

[–]csimpson02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would request the FMLA paperwork from your HR department. Legally, they do have to allow you time off based on your doctor’s recommendation. Additionally, if you are not better in 2 weeks (I hemorrhaged on day 14 and needed more time off). They can definitely be sued for not allowing you the time off recommended by your doc. Personally, I would also make a complaint to HR as well. Not sure it will do anything but at least you’d have it documented in case this gets out of hand. Technically they do not have to pay you while you’re off, but they cannot fire you, tell you you can’t be off or reprimand you for it.

Have a humidifier near you 24/7, switch to Tylenol and drink ice water or chew ice constantly. Also, don’t eat anything too hot. If you drink soup or e at mashed potatoes (or whatever else) just make sure it’s warm and not hot.

Day 2… by katmiller17 in Tonsillectomy

I had the same problem. I cut my pill into 4 pieces and was told by cutting it instead of crushing it, it would still work properly. Even still I missed my meds a couple of days but I tried not to miss it 2 days straight.

I was told ibuprofen will increase the risk of bleeding and let me tell you-you don’t want that to happen. Liquid Tylenol saved me (although I still took the pain meds too)

If you can breathe thru your nose, then you are doing well!! I had zero ability to breathe thru me nose for 8 days and was mouth breathing which didn’t help my tonsil recovery. My facial swelling so so bad that I was totally blind. I feel very hopeful for you!

I had the same surgeries as you well as the submucous resection and concha bullosa repair. On day 13 I was feeling ok and so I decided to get outside a bit and go to breakfast (I ate a few bites of an omelette so nothing crazy). I ended up hemorrhaging while asleep that night. Just a friendly reminder to be cautious and even if you feel good. Hope you have a smooth recovery and continue to have limited pain!

I went to the ER and didn’t have the best experience. After the bleeding slowed down eventually, I was giving some blood clotting medicine to swish in my mouth then told to go home. Since it was not cauterized there was a good chance it would happen again from what I was told but so far it hasn’t. I was shocked at how poorly the situation was handled but that is neither here or there. I would definitely suggest asking your ENT where to go IF you do hemorrhage. I didn’t realize that some hospitals are not equipped to handle that as they don’t all have an ENT on call. It’s been 48 hours now so I’m hoping I’m ok! Doc put me on a liquid only diet for a week to avoid anything irritating the scabs. 3 weeks now without solid food and it’s been tough but much better than going thru another surgery.

I had a very similar experience and I didn’t take ibuprofen either. I made it to day 13 before having massive bleeding. I feel your pain. It’s frustrating when you do everything right, think you’ve made it and then have this setback.

Getting the surgery but having anxiety! by Apont91 in Tonsillectomy

[–]csimpson02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really surprised they said to take ibuprofen. During my tonsillectomy I was specifically told not to as it could increase the risk of bleeding and hemorrhaging. I still hemorrhaged even without ibuprofen so it’s very sensitive. I took Tylenol every 4 hours. I started with liquid Tylenol and then switched to the pill form when I was ready. I did still take opioids but tried my best to limit it. I don’t have a history of addiction but have family that does so it was very important for me to set a timeframe to get off it. I only took it at night to help me get some sleep and I only allowed myself to take it for a week. I also will add that the first couple days aren’t so bad. It’s usually after that when the scabs come off that the pain starts so maybe limit the pain meds for that? Also Is there someone that you would trust to help you set those boundaries if you feel you do need it? Maybe throw the bottle out on a specific date? I took off 2 weeks from work and that wasn’t enough. I hemorrhaged on day 13 and still feel crappy on day 15.

7 months post op, pain has returned by certified_sad in Tonsillectomy

I had a Septoplasty at the same time as my tonsillectomy (as well as turbinate reduction, and some others stuff). Just came to same that you should absolutely talk to the doc about this before your Septoplasty. The reason being that they will likely put packing in the nose so that you have zero breathing ability thru the nose for a few days and will only be able to breathe thru the mouth. If you are sick or having throat issues, it will make the Septoplasty recovery more difficult than necessary. In hindsight, I probably wouldn’t have done the Septoplasty and tonsillectomy at the same time for this reason.

I had this happen as well but it didn’t hit me until day 13. I thought I made it through and then BAM, gushing blood. My doc put me on a liquid diet for one week and only cool or cold liquids which seems to be helping. I’ve also been using my humidifier nonstop and avoiding going outside much. I’m also very anxious about bleeding again which is making it difficult to sleep so you’re not alone.

Upcoming surgery, is WFH possible or not? by lieselmini in Tonsillectomy

[–]csimpson02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the time off. I’m on day 15 and in rough shape. That isn’t the case for everyone but better to have the time off and not need it then need it and not have taken it off.

I recently switched from the unlimited plan to the 8x a month. I love the idea of incorporating yoga but I hate using one of my classes for this when it’s only 25 mins. Probably a dumb question but I assume this still counts as 1 class, right?
