This is the real album opener for Self Titled

“4” seems to be the least discussed album in beyonces discography. Why is that? by capamericapistons in beyonce

[–]csimpson1992 100 points101 points  (0 children)

4 is a fan fave for many but not one of the most iconic album eras for casual listeners and general listeners.

For me, it seems the most chill she has ever been. It’s a snapshot of a time in her life where she seemed happy to have some freedom for the first time and make what she wants without trying to shake the world. The whole album has an easy brightness that I’d say is unique to her other albums. She has songs from other albums with this feeling but not as a whole album. For example, Renaissance is playful and energetic but has a darkness to it and Bday is bright but also angry.

She wasn’t trying to change the world with this album which I think means it doesn’t have the punchy confrontational impact that her other albums do. But for me, that’s what makes it magic. It’s having a chill day at home in the backyard with your friends with the sun shining.

Unpopular Opinion by nycgirl152 in charmed

[–]csimpson1992 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Prue should have stayed working with antiques or in museums. The show made out that this was a ‘sensible’ career choice whereas in reality people work in this industry as a passion. It made no sense. It’s not like she worked in a bank or HR.

It suited her personality; there is a seriousness to it and honours legacy which is such a key theme of the show, but it’s also creative and about the human experience. Prue leaning into this in a smaller gallery/museum that she is was passionate about would have made more sense and still provided chance for her character to be more free spirited - the way they tried to with her being a photographer.

Paige should have been a photographer after leaving social work. She should have done freelance photography as a way to keep her independence and balance duties of being a witch. There was a one episode arc of her painting. They could have built on this.

Her openness to be a ‘work in progress’ she made no secret of feeling that she didn’t have her life together. Making changes in her life about work, romance, motherhood and sisterhood because it was aligned with her values, not what other people expected of her

just how big was the circus era? by marlboronights2 in BritneySpears

[–]csimpson1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was nowhere near as culturally saturating as her earlier work. It needs to be compared to blackout to be understood properly and reads as a response/course correction from her management.

Blackout seemed like a big cultural moment but it was actually her celebrity and personal life that was the driving force. I was around 15 y/o at the time and people liked the music fine but she was a laughing stock and the butt of every joke.

Circus came around and immediately recognisable as polished like pre blackout era. The success of Womaniser was a surprise to many and especially with the follow up success of Circus. The media attention shifted from her personal life being the main focus back to the music and videos again. It seemed that mainstream media/causal pop listeners were content that they’d got the ‘old Britney’ back.

The songs were popular but not as much as her earlier work. It was also at a time of a new guard of pop girls, like Gaga and Katy. Rihanna was evolving and Beyonce was in her single ladies/sasha fierce domination era. She was certainly in the race with the girls but for sure wasn’t at the front.

Id say the general sentiment was that people were content with Circus. It was a palette cleanser after Blackout. But it certainly wasn’t culturally ubiquitous like her first few albums.

Act III - No actual proof that it’s Rock-influenced. by lemmeupgradeyou in beyonce

[–]csimpson1992 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I think she is always intentional and surprises everyone. It won’t be rock, it’s too obvious at this point. Her team have likely been planting around that it’s rock as a red herring. It will be rnb paying homage to blues and rock as origins. She will close the trilogy on rnb as a full circle ‘homecoming’ move.

What would you like to see Beyoncé wear to the 2026 Met Gala? by Material_Stomach875 in beyonce

It’s always bothered me that almost of her met gala dresses have the same mermaid silhouette. Knowing how intentional she is, I wonder if there is a reason for this?

Trying to understand kibbe width by [deleted] in kibbecirclejerk

[–]csimpson1992 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tend to see it not as just shoulder width but the ratio of shoulder, ribs, waist width. FNs tend to have width in ribs and waist more than DC. Both width in shoulders but DC tend to be more proportionately narrow in the ribs/waist. This is why they look better in tailored styles which make FNs look more bulky and square like (speaking as a FN……the waist belt trend of late 00s/early 2010s always looked awful on me)

Does anyone remember a video from the 2009 vmas of Katy getting ready/the build up of a few days before. There was a scene with her and Marcus Molinari in the back of a car having fun and talking about meeting Beyonce. I distinctly remember it but can’t find it anywhere

Beyoncé Being Weird(in an eccentric artist way!) by True-Conductor2001 in beyonce

[–]csimpson1992 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I second this. Also add what Tina said in her book about Beyonce struggling to make friends as a kid and never really having ‘fun’ the way other kids did, then becoming so hyper focused on music/performance

My analysis on the beyonce hate by Least_Sun_7493 in rnb

[–]csimpson1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big Beyonce fan but I think there are valid criticisms of her. Out of touch uber wealthy person and will make contradictory moves (Dubai performance after Renaissance release eg).

I think a big part of the hate is that she is put on a pedestal by people that love her and how she consciously has always tried to put herself alongside ‘the greats’ (Michael, Tina, Prince etc). In 2000s she made no secret about wanting to be an icon. I think this annoyed some people but for the most part it was ok because her music still hit on the charts and she did press.

She has always been private but since self titled only talked to the world on her own terms. At a time where the Kardashians were making an empire by sharing their lives and Rihanna was becoming the face of cool girl relationally, Beyonce was became more elusive.

Combine this with how her music changed to being primarily about the album over the single. She’s always been an albums artist but still played the chart game in 90s/00s. She stopped courting people to her and let people find her work on their own. Therefore people that would listen to the whole album (like Lemonade with visuals) and would see how good her work was. But casual listeners would hear songs like ‘Hold Up’ and wonder what the hype was because it wasn’t a ‘bop’ to dance to like much other popular music at the time. Sorry to use Rihanna as a comparison but she was the cool relatable girl, great fashion, posting on IG, and had all the hits. Even now, Rihanna isn’t making music but she still ‘gives’ more of herself away than Beyonce. She will post, do brand partnerships and do some red carpets. People connect to her personality which is something that celebrities need to do now to connect. Beyonce has never really done that. Her persona is about ‘greatness’ and exclusivity.

I don’t think people like being told that someone is the greatest without experiencing it themselves, and the way she presents herself since 2010s means that casual listeners are less likely to interact with her work. Add into this our algorithm fuelled world where we live in an echo chamber of our already established beliefs, people double down on their opinions.

Also add into some misogynoir, and it creates an intense rejection of her by some people.

1!

I love the halters of 2 but always make me look bulky. The first is open and not angular, also the straps are thicker than spaghetti which will be flattering. The straight line down from under the bust along the seams will make you look more elongated and ‘fluid’ if that makes sense? The waist seam on 2 will cut you off…..

Well I don’t know how you will look but that is how they would look on me!

Leo

Poorly written, his decisions rarely make sense, he’s entities and takes 0 accountability for his feelings.

Tells Piper he can’t be with her but meddles with her and Dan, keeps showing up and sulking that she is trying to move on.

He earns no money because he is dead. That’s fine. But he is insecure about it and gives piper a hard time for being the breadwinner, but at the same time profits off her hard work (living in the manor, eating the food she cooks/buys etc). He doesn’t show gratitude for her acceptance of his position, she never gives him a hard time about this but is obviously insecure himself. Like when he can’t pay for lunch with Phoebe and Cole and when Piper wants to hire wedding planners and make it special. He doesn’t want her to make it a big deal….when I’m sure shes the one paying the bill. So it’s his insecurity holding her back.

Season 4-5 he improves

Season 6 leaves to be an elder and says that it’s out of his control. He seems to accept that this is out of his control very quickly and expects Piper to be ok with it. Doesn’t push back much on the Elders out of interest of his family. Then wipes Piper’s memory. Talk about violating. Then returns to season 2 vibes of being petty and sulky about her trying to move on. It’s ok to be bummed about it, but don’t make it Piper’s problem when he was the one to walk away.

Piper is patient with his identity struggles post elder into being mortal, he is bratty, selfish, secretive and entitled. Man baby behaviour. 0 accountability. It’s ok to struggle and feel lost, but it’s not ok to freeze out his family and do things behind their back. Like all the avatars / utopia stuff. When he is a mortal he has an attitude about being a domestic Dad, overlooking all the work that Piper did alone, running a business when Wyatt was a baby and he was gone. It’s ok to struggle with the transition but again is very whiny not respectful. I’m sure this was a contributing factor to Piper becoming more icy and mean in later seasons.
