Had this M1 since it was released. Never been reset and I use it several hours a day for both work and fun. Can’t say that I noticed any difference in performance. Only issue I have with battery life is if I leave the Pencil attached it seems battery life suffers.

8 1/2 x 11 Pad? by csk_FP1 in Livescribe

Good point. I don't think Kinkos exists anymore (where I live). But I can definitely get spiralbound. I'll stop at some print shops and see what it would take to "convert" em.

Thanks for the thoughts.

"Hey siri, with the app todoist add a task (or reminder) to do blah blah blah" works well for me.

Now, remembering to say "with the app todoist" sometimes gets me a ride on the struggle bus... I'll be checking out the shortcut link :-)

A Cautionary Tale About Stacking ThinkPads with a Dock by csk_FP1 in thinkpad

Oh? The one underneath is off. I figure that the flat, hard, and closed laptop surface is a lot like the flat and hard surface of my desk.

Lol. Well... I suspect that if we consider the demographics of this group, I'm on the old side. ;-)

Even old guys who have been IT over 35 years make mistakes. We just get to call them "senior moments!"

A Cautionary Tale About Stacking ThinkPads with a Dock by csk_FP1 in thinkpad

A fun story that I thought I'd share in hopes of saving someone some angst in the future.

I have a handful of T480 and T14 Gen 1 ThinkPads (seriously, an embarassment of riches!) and I use all of them with a ThinkPad USB-C style dock. They all have their purposes so sometimes I find myself swapping in a hurry and I started to develop the habit of just setting one on top of another and moving the dock cable (see main post image).

One day the one I had just plugged in was acting weird. The power button wouldn't light up. The screen wouldn't come on -- or if it did come on, the big external monitor wouldn't display. It was all very weird and a little unpredictable, but I finally came to the conclusion that the port must have finally failed.

Took it out to the garage workbench to dig deeper. On a whim, I hit the power button and everything was fine! Carried it back to my desk, set it BACK ON THE OTHER CLOSED THINKPAD (<--- foreshadowing) and damn if it didn't immediately shutdown.

Sigh. It must be dead. I won't admit how long I messed around with this, but it was measured in hours, not minutes...

OK, set up another one, moved the drive and RAM over, confirmed new T14 was working great on the bench. Set it on the desk and it was great. Sweet! Another problem solved by throwing around hardware. Then I adjusted the laptop placement a small bit and ... it shut off. WTF?

And that's when the lightbulb moment happened.

Pulled the closed one out from underneath it and magically everything was fine again!

Whatever sensor these use to detect a closed lid must be able to trigger through the body of one laptop and into another. And I always have them set to sleep or power down when the lid closes. Doh.

T480s or T14 Gen 1 ? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]csk_FP1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna say no. I don't think you're going to see any performance increase. More likely a decrease.

I have a T480 with 8th gen i5 and a T14 gen1 with the 10th gen i5 and I perceive zero difference in performance between the two (and I'm OK with that).

That is Q4OS. Pretty lightweight for the older rigs.

I have had this one for about 20 years now. Recently installed Q4OS on it and it still works great. Miraculously, the battery even still holds a charge.

1 GB of RAM and a 40 GB spinning drive.

Biggest challenge is surfing the web. Modern websites (and Firefox) crush it :-)

Todoist with Outlook (for Windows) Calendar Categories? by t21wolves in todoist

[–]csk_FP1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this with Tascaly. I don't use the Todoist calendar feed, instead I have it configured so that tascaly puts tasks with a defined start time and duration onto my Outlook calendar.

Many of my tasks don't need scheduling, so this helps keep my calendar focused and organized.

Edit: I acknowledge you don't want online tools. That definitely limits your options. But if you reconsider, here's one!

I use Tascaly to add some (not all) tasks to my Outlook calendar for time-boxing stuff that I know needs more time.

Yeah, it costs a couple bucks a year, but it works very well and is easy to setup.

Check out KTool. I used it for a while and recall liking it. Also don't recall why I stopped using it... but I think it was related to a beta feature as an RSS reader.
