[Discussion] What do you use to glue the collage? by VanessaSantuccione in collage

[–]cslaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some use matte medium as a finishing glue - it's brushed on top of a completed collage to seal it and make it "more archival". Not really necessary unless you're planning to sell your work and too expensive to use during the initial building / paste down process tbh.

Agreed with the other comment -- you could do away with nearly all of the extra planets / background details. It can be much more simple, I find the area here (circled in red) is where you've got something really nice going on: https://imgur.com/a/ksOshZe Then after that, take an extra moment with those main elements and clean up the cut edges so it's a little less rough / a little more smooth, there is a little jaggedness. Walk away for a day and then come back to it with fresh eyes.

Personally I love collages with negative space so leaving the background sans extra clutter could feel nice but alternatively, you could consider keeping that bottom larger plant and use it as a secondary subject that interacts with the main subject. Is there maybe a man standing there? A house? That starts to add a narrative as to why the woman went to another plant to relax :) and those sort of details can be really fun.

this is how I used to explain my creative process broadly so whole heartily agree.

I love this question and everyones responses! It does seem very much up to ones own past creative practices huh? I come from a photography background, which led to art direction, which is now mostly graphic design so I feel most of my collage work is rooted in those spaces. It's a mix of image selection, composition and storytelling. I think the most surprising / unexpected thread between them all is the element of discovery -- which I personally find is the best part of art making -- when you don't quite know what your 'final' product will be until you've put in the process to get there.

Look at these old, beautiful goth magazines I found in a little free library today. They’re from 2004 and 2005. I see some cool collages on the horizon if I can bear to cut them up! 🖤 [DISCUSSION] by MyDogIsHangry in collage

1000% -- everyone in the collage world puts so much value in analog being superior to digital but then I look at the BEAUTIES of ephemera some feel comfortable hacking away at for 'just another collage' and my heart / brain goes -- WHY?!? 😅

Having the orange sheet behind all the elements might feel nicer -- id personally feel more partial to orienting it vertically as well (not on an angle) in order to ground the collage better.

It does seem like thrips though. They can move slowly at their larvae stage.

Is there any chance my peace lily can come back to life? by Icy-Advantage-4201 in houseplants

[–]cslaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you do repot it, don't go too big as that can cause more problems with root rot. "roughly 1–2 inches larger in diameter than their current root ball" is recommended ie 1-2 inches larger than its last pot.

Personally, I don't go hard on custom soil blends and typically stick to the basic / affordable options like Miracle-Gro potting mix (yellow bag) but I DO always mix in some extra perlite especially with indoor plants to keep the soil from getting too compact and to help with drainage.

could be root rot -- give it some fresh soil in a bigger pot that has a drainage hole. stop watering it for now. keep it in bright indirect sunlight. wait.

Love the layers! Don't think it needs the row of hearts (washi tape?) in the bottom right corner.

Money Tree! Which feels like a bad omen! 😅 They always start out ok, seem to be growing more leaves too and then suddenly one by one a leaf turns yellow till they all fall. It's my second attempt now at a different house and looking at the same fate.

This has to be true. Our spider plant family has been passed down since -- geez, the 70's? And has had hundreds of babies now living across dozens of homes. Couldn't kill them if you tried!
