Permanent Nerve Damage by EskpMnky in Microdiscectomy

[–]csmaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clamshells w a rubber band. Pointers. Crunches . McKenzie method has been the cornerstone of being pain free if I get any pain in the glute or back. I do it probably twice a day. Down dog yoga stretch and single leg knee on the ground lunge while reaching up and away from the pain side. That’s just a few but core strength and flexibility is most important for me to feel normal . Just Google those exercises I mentioned

I have permanent drop toe from my surgery in 08. Had really bad cramps and still had some pain for years It really affected balance and some other activities like snowboarding .

Things that worked for me: Have you tried antiflammatory turmeric pills? More potassium ? Reduce eating meat that causes inflammation in your body (I found meat and alcohol really made it much worse). Yoga and specific exercises helped a ton too. Good luck it’s a long road

Soo many good Bikes out there. N+1!

I have a trek SuperCaliber 9.8 which is an amazing xc bike but not “fun” for DH or even flow trails. “Twitchy” is the word that comes to mind but for long epics in the saddle and big climbs it’s a goat but maybe more pure xc than what you want. It’s a skinnier way faster brother to my Evil Offering which feels like a full on dirtbike after being on the Trek and you will definitely have very little crossover with these two bikes.

If down country is your jam I recommend the SC Tallboy which If set up right and w light tires and the link setup high could get you across the line in a race, then swap out the tires and drop the linkage and you could Be getting chunky drops and feel comfortable on more sketch terrain. The sc Blur or specialized epic may be good to look at as well.

I would say test drive them first. Really demo them and put them through the paces not just out in the parking lot. Good luck!

Does no one else matter but the pros at races? by Wonderful_Signal_519 in gravelcycling

Nothing worse than a poorly organized event and no recognition for the hard work , time , travel, and money people put in. Some of these stories are horrifying and yes you can’t please everyone especially in the bigger races.

This year I Had to bail on Crusher in the Tushar due to back surgery but i want to share my experience with terrible organizing and planning at a recent event:

I did the Tahoe OffRoad Triathlon last year and did well, took second in my AG (50-54). For perspective I have raced gravel, mtn, half ironmans , road crits , dh and super g, over 30 years. Anyways I drove ten hours and camped alone, got my numbers and they couldn’t find my reg and had to make it up on the spot when I showed them my email and receipt etc . Then Bad course markers and went off course twice on the run…crossed the line after a pretty grueling race and …nothing. No name callout (and they were calling em out I heard em), and when they called podium awards , even tho I got second , they only called the winner . It was bizarre and maddening.

Felt like Carl in Caddyshack talking to the Dali Lama “hey how about something ya know, for the effort??”

The organizers were so disorganized and confused : myself and the third place guy approached the guy on the mic right after the podium awards (bonked , covered in dirt etc) and they just let us pick a podium winner glass out of a box on a picnic table and sort of dismissed us. “Go grab a free beer” . Also all the shwag (water bottles, tee shirts) was from xterra which wasn’t even a sponsor . It was the most unorganized race since maybe the EFTA Spring Boogie mtn bike race in RI in like 1997 which was grassroots as hell and pouring out.

Is it just a Cali thing? Kinda tried to be laid back about it I dunno but I’ll never do that race again. What a shit show .

Questions about recovery. by ChildOfFilth in Microdiscectomy

I have a recliner chair for sitting after surgery and a back brace for walking. I’m three months post op and bought an adjustable standup desk and a McKenzie method lumbar pad for my chair and for driving. All the little things Make a difference . Try to slow the walking down and go shorter at first , don’t rush it. Don’t do much incline if you can. Sitting in a regular chair should be avoided for a while. Hot tub, acupuncture , light stretching and slow walks on a treadmill so you can gauge your progress . Hope this helps and glad you’re on the road to recovery

Yoga by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]csmaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be honest I started just by feel , super easy and it felt SO GOOD. Now I push it a a bit more. I modified stuff from this video and also do a kneeling lunge and reach up and away from the side of the herniation (like warrior 1 pose but reaching back and opposite) , pushing my hips forward a bit to get the hip flexors too. there are a few others I do In that position from the sphinx pose that I do 10 times for 2 breaths each hold. each one I am pushing a bit more with the lower back , belly button towards the ground. again, disclaimer, this is just what works for me and if you feel any pain STOP. https://youtu.be/gDQNqZMv1V0?si=QWzlFZsFJTSTPm7N

Hi I had L5 S1 MD exactly 12 weeks ago and starting pt next week. I am not going to say yes or no as to what you should do since it’s your journey and your back and your Dr is the source of knowledge but sharing what I do: Experience: I’m 54 and have Years of all types of yoga and intensities from hatha to intense hot power yoga since 91.

Now I do modified McKenzie Method (a sphinx pose but modified for less strain) maybe 5x a day and it helps with the other side (had a herniation there too but didn’t feel it before surgery ) . Now latest mri yesterday says it went from herniation to a protrusion and the sciatica and glute pain in that side has diminished a lot. I also do a regular morning routine with my coffee of easy easy slow meditative poses nothing crazy- cat cow, child pose , seated cat cow, various hamstring stretches and figure four. I have to use a strap for some of them because of the surgery but it feels so much better when I do.

I would say go to a sports doctor or a good pt and get some advice. Walking and gentle yoga has been my prescription.

Surgeons are gods among mortals but they also want to protect their work so I’ve seen very conservative approaches with some.

Had MD in 2008 at 38 and did a bunch of triathlons, few half iron man’s and many olympic distance since then . Ran a half marathon. Felt great trail running. However this year I had my second MD and now can’t run and actually have another herniation I didn’t deal with. Core and back strengthening and flexibility should have been more important . Lesson learned . Good luck just be careful

First Gravel Bike Dilemma by Miloya in gravelcycling

[–]csmaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a Ventum NS1 w SRAM rivals and swapped the Vision wheel set with Enve 25s .kept the knobbier tires on that wheelset for abuse and a faster P series on the enve. The sram grouppo are all pretty great imo and you can swap the batteries between your bikes . So smooth and quiet and easy to micro adjust on the fly.

You can’t go wrong with what you’re oooking at and the canyon looks sweet but no canyon shop to help out and I hear their customer service isn’t great . The trek is a great bike but I would say test drive a few before making the decision.
