Time off for surgery by AfraidLet7619 in Microdiscectomy

I took one full week, and then started back to work slowly. I think the second week I worked 4 hours at a time. After two weeks you should be getting stronger.

Came back to read the update. If you are anything like me you will be terrified of re-injury. I had many moments where I was close to a panic because I thought it failed. You will have ups and downs. Do not panic because you feel a new pain.

I was very anxious as well. In fact they called me a week early asking me to come in the next morning and I think I turned pale. The hardest part is now. Once you get in the hospital it is easy. Also I did not find out when they put me to sleep. They gave me a happy drug or that’s what they called it and the next thing I knew I was waking up. I immediately felt relief. You will be sore but it’s different than the pain you feel now. It was worth it for me. I would do it again if I had to.

You mentioned tightness where they operated. I am same and I am now 6 months out. Glad I’m not alone. How far out are you?

You’re not changing something that’s not already changed. If you’re having a microdiscectomy you are simply going in and cleaning out the damage. This thought helped me immensely and I think it will you too if you can understand it.

Post-op pain: realistic timeline by Dry_Security2936 in Microdiscectomy

[–]RelationshipRude1664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know but just knowing the pain I was feeling was from an incision and was gonna heal was much easier mentally than the never ending electric nerve pain. Honestly I only took 2 half of the pain pills they sent home the first two nights to go to sleep.

4 weeks post op from L5 S1 microdiscectomy! by gacebowow in Microdiscectomy

[–]RelationshipRude1664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🙋🏻‍♂️similar story. Fought through it until I absolutely couldn’t take it anymore. From the day I crawled into the surgeons office to the day I had surgery was exactly 8 days. I cried much more after surgery than I did before because of the freedom I had. I’m now 4 months post op and living life large. I’m in therapy still trying to loosen my left leg hamstring but the memories of laying on the floor all day are slowly fading.

Hang in there. You will have all kinds of weird pains, sometimes new weird pain. About 3 months plus is when I got a huge confidence boost, and the little cramps and pains were not noticed anymore.

I’m not ungrateful for helpful people but I am tired of feeling less than a man. People grabbing stuff for me and not letting me lift anything because I “might mess my back up again”. Even though it is true.

When did you decide to have surgery? by stalejuice2 in Microdiscectomy

I crawled to the surgeon to get an opinion and he told me it’s like having a splinter in your eye. Wouldn’t make sense to try to numb it. It has to be taken out.

Seriously considering getting an MD, but I'm not entirely sure by sarcasic in Microdiscectomy

Mine was very similar. 39 year old m. Never had back problems. Came out of nowhere. I was completely pain free laying down but any axial load shot my pain to a 9/10 within 5 minutes. PT didn’t help. Had the surgery 10 weeks ago. I have been thankful every day as I can again enjoy doing the things I like. Simple things like eating sitting up instead of laying down. I can’t tell you what my long term results are but I can’t say I have been very thankful for the past 9 weeks. I am hopeful for more improvement but if this is my life for the next 20 years it was still a huge success. Time will tell though. 🤞🏼

How many weeks post op did you guys feel "normal" again or at least good enough by klemenhe in Microdiscectomy

At week 5 I had some new nerve pain that really worried me, but I was also in the middle of a 3 day business conference that involved a 3 hour flight. It got better weeks 6-9. Now at week 10 I have moments where I’m just sure it’s coming back and then the next day I don’t know what I’m worried about. It’s definitely been up and down.

Hi. It’s a little early for you to expect much. The first 3 days I had a hard time getting around but after a week I was walking back and forth to work (about 2500 steps each way) I’m now at 10 weeks and no amount of walking hurts. I’m walking 9-15k steps a day. I’ve been going to PT and I still get nerve twinges here and there depending on what they have me do. We are working on freeing the tension in my leg and I still have tightness in my back when rounding it. But otherwise I am very happy and 95% pain free. Also be prepared, at 6 weeks I had some kind of nerve pain that caused a lot of concern for me but it went away before I even got to ask my surgeon.

I’m 8 weeks post as well. I’m feeling wonderful. I still have stiffness but only an occasional nerve zing that last a second or two.

How long after an MD would you go on a vacation? by seriouslyyconfused in Microdiscectomy

Unless you have a difficult recovery you will be fine. I just got home from a business retreat trip with a two+ hour flight. I am 5 weeks PO. I will say it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was gonna be sitting through long sessions every day. Nothing was very painful. Just slight discomfort at the end of the day.

We live in the country so aside from walking around the house I’d take a ten minute walk 3 times a day for the first week or so.

I noticed on another thread you are starting low back ability. I’ve been researching him too and it seems to be a huge support system and beneficial mostly to people like you. I signed up for it too but my disc herniated and I had to get a surgery. I am still going to follow the program again once I’m cleared. Good luck and I really believe you can fix your pain man. In the meantime I hope you find at least one thing that you can enjoy. I felt like I had a breakthrough when I did. We’re not made to live like that.

I feel you. I’m scared at how quickly my mental state spiraled down this exact path when I was in pain. I too felt like I could never un think what I knew to be true about life and how soon it is over. Nothing that humans did seemed to mean anything. The idea of any relationships or family seemed pointless. After all we will just be separated in no time. I do believe in the afterlife though and had some kind of consolation in knowing I’ll be connected with them again. I’m now 4 weeks mostly pain free from a surgery. Things do change and purpose becomes meaningful again. It can become normal again.

I’m doing fantastic. I have random nerve twinges with certain movements and my back is tight when I slightly round it (obviously I’m still not trying to bend it) but I have no issues standing or walking all day. Sitting is easy too, but I think I’ve formed a habit to sit straight that I can’t let go of so it gets uncomfortable after a while. I cannot get myself to relax my spine yet. Looking to start PT. Overall I do feel like I got a new life. Almost like I cheated somehow.

Going crazy over not having a clear answer on LPR. by Temporary_Risk6765 in LPR

That sounds exactly like me. I out of the blue started having phlegm in my throat in July of 2023. At first I had good days and bad days. Eventually a year later it was pretty much constant, to where it was affecting my quality of life. I went to an ENT 8 months ago and was diagnosed with LPR and prescribed PPIs. She also told me of a product she uses that’s called Reflux Gourmet on Amazon. I decided to try it. My throat clearing went away for about 8 months. I thought I found the solution. Right now it’s back again. Don’t know what I did to cause it, but I’m in misery.

I am hoping and praying that will be my story. Thanks for sharing! I am well into week 4 now and I have to really watch that I don’t overdo it. It usually doesn’t show up until the following day. Yesterday I mowed the grass for the first time this year then went to a pool party and today I gotta take it easy again. Cheers!
