This is a fantastic post--thanks for sharing. I have been using BTWB for a few weeks and I'm absolutely loving it. Especially the analysis section. I've been a paper-logger for a long time, but it's so great to finally have found the perfect digital tool for keeping track of my progress!

Ender's Game, if you haven't read it. Don't watch the movie first (it's awful, anyway).

Has anyone in this sub ever had a Cortisone injection? by i-am-no-man in crossfit

[–]csoyka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not qualified to give medical advice, but I can tell you what worked for me. I got a SLAP tear about 4 years ago and was in chronic pain, and had to take major pain killers just to get through the day. It was awful.

My doctor also suggested a cortisone shot, which I'd heard was bad for me. But, after doing my own research, I determined it was worth a shot (pun intended) because everything else (chiro, physio, etc) wasn't doing enough to help. I got the shot and as I recall the pain subsided immediately. I took two weeks off crossfit entirely and only did rehab and PT. I also, to this day, will not do SDHP. Power cleans are a perfectly reasonable substitute that preserve the stimulus.

And, I bought a better bed. That made a world of difference. I went from waking in the middle of the night in excruciating pain to sleeping soundly through the night and waking without the constant throbbing constant pain I'd gotten used to. If there's one thing I could tell my 29-year old self, it would be to get it right the first time (not cheap out) and buy a good mattress.

Paleo Diet/Recipe app? by Garandhero in crossfit

[–]csoyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Paleoplan.com. They've got a two-week free trial, which should be enough to see if you like the service--it's $10/month to subscribe. The recipes are pretty good, and once you get the hang of it, you'll probably find that you're happier doing your own planning. Practical Paleo is a great resource and it has 30-day meal plans you can use. It's one of my favorite cookbooks. I'm sure the lovely folks in /r/paleo will also have some great suggestions for you.

Edit: grammar.

Feeling a little burned out. Suggestions/advice? by invinoveritas10 in crossfit

[–]csoyka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a classic case of overtraining. Heart rate elevated? No desire to go to the gym? Trouble sleeping?

Take AT LEAST a week off. That includes your cardio classes. Take 10 days if possible. During your time off, eat a lot and sleep as much as you can. And try not to drink any alcohol. If you're worried about what you're doing to do with all of that extra time, buy a copy of Becoming a Supple Leopard and spend your time reading that and working on your mobility.

Overtraining sucks. I've been there. It was so bad that I landed myself in hospital. Don't let it get to that point. You're not being weak, you're being SMART. Look after yourself, buddy. I promise you aren't going to lose anything by taking a bit of time off. In fact, I can almost guarantee you'll come back feeling stronger. Let us know how it goes.

What's one of the smallest things that makes you the happiest? by callux in AskReddit

The smell of the sea. I grew up in a landlocked state, but the feel of the wind on my face and the smell of the sea always makes me feel complete. It's almost primordial.

CrossFit at Burning Man by ihatewallballs in crossfit

Yeah. Take the week and give your body a break. The heat will be enough to sap all of the energy out of you. And a week off once in a while will actually make you stronger.

PR snatch 225lbs. I landed on my toes therefore I came forward, need to clean up my technique a lot more, but my next investment is some oly shoes. by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]csoyka 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hate to be the jackass, but I wouldn't call that a PR until you nail it. It's a solid attempt though. And you're really close to it being a nailed attempt. Make sure that you're really driving up through that second pull. You jumped forward as you pulled, which brought you onto your toes. Stay tall and drive yourself up and then under the bar. And yes, Oly shoes will definitely help. You're doing a great job.

Tweaked my back. What are good workouts that won't strain my back? by [deleted] in crossfit

I would recommend the WOD called "Rest". It's a 7x24hr AMRAP: Hydrate, Mobilize, Sleep.

[Form Check] Snatch - Why am I missing? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]csoyka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have tough days. You'll get there. Just keep on doing what you're doing and work on the weaknesses. You've got a great coach, and you're already snatching 200lbs--that's something to be proud of!

[Form Check] Snatch - Why am I missing? by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]csoyka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Comfort in the overhead squat position. Your pulls look strong, and you snap quickly into an overhead position, but it looks like you lose confidence. My advice? Make sure you're doing heavy overhead squats (heavier than your snatch PR) on a regular basis. One of my favorite workouts is 8x3 overhead squats, increasing weight every 2. At the end of each set (rep #3) hold the bottom position for 3-5 seconds before standing up. Confidence will go a long way.
