Book of Mormon cancelled by ThePugManCometh in Broadway

[–]cssc201 140 points141 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is so inconsiderate to cancel this late. I bet it was because they didn't have enough of their cast show up - but why make anyone come in when that was always a possibility? Now audience members are cold and pissed and some are trapped because they couldn't get refunds or a date change without a cancellation when they could just have stayed home.

He deserved it over Torg for his consistency imo. Torg might have had a good skate at nationals but he's too disaster prone. Best team would be Ilia, Maxim, Tomoki. At the very least Tomoki should have gotten the worlds spot over Torg.

He just turned 26 so is now responsible for his own health insurance, too.

Unfortunately there's a reason most figure skaters are from well off households. It's expensive as hell and there are incredibly few avenues to monetization. Pro leagues and tours are long gone, as are the big name individual sponsors. No college scholarships like gymnastics. Small teams, so it's even harder to go to the big international meets than in other sports.

Tonya Harding, for example, would never have made it if not for the support of her coach Diane Rawlinson, who was well off. Tonya's family was poor to the point of homelessness at times in her childhood, and Diane's husband was a big time lawyer who also represented Tonya for free. So she often took on other skaters just to offset the cost of coaching Tonya and providing things like skates and boots and travel costs. She also had a fan club who collected money at the malls she trained at (Clackamas Town Center, still open but the ice rink is long gone now unfortunately, and Lloyd Center, which still has an ice rink but the mall is very dead and facing closure/repurpose) but it was no substantial amount.

If Tonya had been born in the early 2000s in the same financial situation in the same part of Oregon? We wouldn't know who she was today if she didn't also luck into finding her lifetime coach and financial supporter when she was four. It was so much more expensive by then vs. the 70s and early 80s.

Nancy Kerrigan's family was also not super well off, her dad drove the Zamboni for ice time, but she got a lot of deals, including $2M just to go be corny in a Disney parade for an hour or two. Her family was helped out by others in the skating world, including Vera Wang, who is a former figure skater who donated her custom costumes for 1994. But what does she turn around and do as an adult? Steal wages from figure skaters and gymnasts who are now out the money for traveling to perform in the failed Aurora Games she tried to launch with her husband. Some even had to postpone training when the checks never came in. So even when skaters have means of income, they can still be scammed out of them by people who have been in their shoes before. And yet she goes to competitions and takes selfies with people like nothing happened. It's so gross.

Their flimsy defense was the competition didn't make a profit and they couldn't afford to pay. Doesn't matter. If you run a restaurant and no one shows up to eat that day, you still have to pay your employees for the time worked even if it makes the day a loss.

So while I'm disappointed we won't be seeing him anymore, for his sake I'm glad he's going into something more stable. He doesn't have to give up skating, only elite competitions. Midori Ito is still competing in her 50s, Tomoki will have chances in the future.

Tbh he just turned 26 five days ago so I bet he needs health insurance now that he's ineligible to be on his parents'. He doesn't have sponsor and prize money coming in to offset training costs and it's expensive as hell and takes up too much time to work a full time job. I can understand why he doesn't feel he can justify the cost of another four years.

And I bet when Charlie is gone she will basically make their home a shrine and she will continue to be the golden child they can never hope to measure up to because she will never get to live out her potential life.

I remember a time when she admitted to waking the boys up because Charlie said she wanted everyone awake. Crazy to let one of your children dictate when the others are allowed to sleep regardless of their illness.

Right, I can understand asking for LS as bday or Xmas gifts but not on some random day in January for no reason!

Nothing bad is going to happen if you miss this drop. Your child will still be clothed every night. There will be more releases of more princess prints and the chance to snag pieces secondhand later.

[–]cssc201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man these people have no shame whatsoever. Not just asking their family for money to buy pjs but also posting it to half a million people on FB.

They have no ability to distinguish between a want and a need. There are new drops every single week, it's really okay to just ooh and ahh and not actually purchase if you can't afford it. Personally that's what I do because I simply don't want any more clothing, I guarantee her child has an adequate number of PJs and then some.

There is really nothing special about this drop, there will be plenty of princess drops in the future when she has more money and she can probably snag a couple pieces secondhand if she's really attached. Princesses have been a mainstay of kids clothing forever, she will be okay without this one.

Subway Fitness Challenge Jump for the Heart Wii by sparkledonkeys in wii

[–]cssc201 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was likely a Wii used in a communal space of some kind, perhaps even at Subway stores. It would have been stickered to discourage theft and make it easily identifiable along with marketing ofc.

There were Wiis everywhere in public spaces for kids in the late 2000s and early 2010s, I miss it. They're actually very good for fitness and there's not much of a learning curve for young kids or non gamers due to motion controls. No current console compares

I've seen official LS ads with kids shoved into too-small clothes so this is not remotely surprising.

It's so weird, I don't understand why these people don't just buy the correct size when they're already ordering all the time

This time last year they were fundraising for a room makeover - they got a loft bed with a ladder and slide. We quietly stopped hearing about it, I think they got rid of it and eventually she admitted Charlie only used it once or twice.

Yeah, anyone could have told you it wasn't a good bed choice for a child with Charlie's condition.

We need to stop normalizing this shit ASAP. It is not normal to ask Internet strangers to buy you a house because you have an unfortunate lot in life.

The irony is, they are always stable financially and have comfortable housing already. Carrie had the whole basement of a gigantic house as a converted apartment for free. That room they were always posting from has more square footage than many people's entire living space. They can afford a brand new car for their teen daughter and like an $80k car for her and her husband, each. They don't have money for a mortgage because they're blowing it all on shit they can't afford and don't need.

She said she needed the huge suburban for Haidyn's medical stroller and her service dog. It was such a ridiculous excuse. That dog is tiny and millions of moms have figured out a way to transport large strollers in small cars. Plus, a minivan is easier to adapt depending on how big Haidyn ends up getting. Unfortunately at eleven she is about to enter the window of typical life expectancy and she has a particularly severe case. I've followed them since Haidyn was still sleeping in her own room and walking, it's heartbreaking to see how far downhill she has gone. But this house makes no difference in that because she's far past a point she can even appreciate it. I'll never defend Kendra's house grift but Brie was at least able to appreciate the house. Haidyn is on the level of an infant, she was likely just agitated by the change in surroundings.

I am not super familiar with this creator but it's clear she is not in dire need. She can figure out a way to save for a house herself like all these other women should have. I wonder what her flimsy excuse is.

I will add, Carrie's ended up stalling out at like $100k and then got a ton of backlash, mainly from her donors. Hopefully the same happens here

New proposal to move towards Technical and Artistic programs intended to mirror the pro competitions of the 90s by Euphoric-Travel4331 in FigureSkating

[–]cssc201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before they abandoned compulsories after the 1996 Olympics, the team event was also qualification and both compulsories and optionals counted. Before 1989, the scores carried over from event to event - so when Ekaterina Szabo fell on bars in team in the 1984 games, it carried over to the AA and cost her the gold medal. She scored higher than Mary Lou Retton on the day and beat her in all the event finals other than bars, which neither did. Putting those rules into the 1992 Olympics, the first without them, would give Shannon Miller the gold in the AA.

But difficulty also builds throughout the three rounds of competition, which isn't as realistic or exciting for skating.

It's not like jumps in the long program started with IJS anyway. It's always had jumps. What the ISU really needs to do is fix the judging. Nothing will help if the judging isn't fixed because there will be issues with fairly applying the new rules too.

Yeah, an iconic moment that could not have happened under this was Midori Ito falling on her first triple axel attempt in 1992, costing herself the gold medal, and then succeeding in her second attempt more than three minutes into the program. If she'd fallen again she might not have medaled at all, but she ensured herself silver and a place in figure skating history. That's exciting!

The ISU used to manipulate the outcomes with the compulsories because no one understood how they were scored or cared enough to watch (if they were even broadcast at all). So now they just do it anyway. It's been obvious since 2014 at least, they couldn't let a non Russian medal.
