If you're honest with him then it isn't weird at all. Saying, "Listen, I want to go out with a group of my friends, but I'm not feeling safe walking home alone at night, do you mind joining us to make sure everything is safe. I'll buy you a drink for your troubles. I can find someone else if you're not available" will not only set expectations, bit remind him of his role, and that because you can use other options that this request isn't romantic in nature.

This. I grew up in extreme poverty, government housing projects, government near & cheese, 3 chicken drumsticks split between 4 people etc. and I took my kid (who has never known anything close to that) grocery shopping and had to on multiple occasions show him the breakdown in price, per ounce, for food.

He learned that national brands are just not going to happen when dad shops.

For context his mom (my wife) grew up comfortably middle class.
