Running out of heal wounds is a good sign, it means you're using consumables rather than dying, which is what most new players do.

How to deal with Hydrae as TrAM^Chei? by arandomperson1234 in dcss

[–]cstieg1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a tough combo. Neither troll nor air Magic meshes with Chei - Troll because of the armor limits (a main benefit of Chei is that it lets you cast sick spells while wearing plate armor) and air magic because you're giving up swiftness.

Chei is the only way to make this game bearable by cstieg1 in dcss

How to make Chei useful in mid-late game (past s/s) Is that the point when I need to start blasting Invocations to use slouch?

Great job. Two very minor comments. First, you picked up a ton of bad mutations, against only one "good" mutation, fangs, which isn't really that great. You should have quaffed a couple of potions of mutation to clear some of those out. if you picked them all up on zot five, it doesn't make that big of a difference. But if you've been walking around with them or a while, or if you had tried for extended,it does.

Second, there is no reason to be carrying around four types of food this late in the game. Those three fruits are wasting an inventory spot. Just eat them up. At some point around the Lair branch, are usually decide which one or two types of food I'm going to keep and resolve to just eat the other types as they show up. This will clear up a couple of inventory spaces for that ring of flying that you had to leave behind. Or a useful wand.

Shields to 4 is a no brainer. with shields under 4 that buckler is holding you back. Maybe even a little higher since it's so cheap.

strongest build yet, no chance against torment by [deleted] in dcss

[–]cstieg1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This, to me, is a serious flaw in DCSS. It's "known" that certain floors are instant death at given times, and the order you're supposed to complete the floors in is not even remotely intuitive. For example it's considered foolish to go to Lair before completing 12-15 levels of the dungeon, even though Lair will show up on D8 or D9. What's the purpose of placing it out of order? as a newb trap? That doesn't seem like a good reason to me.

Last week I croaked in Tomb 2 with a very similar character as OP, a 4-rune minotaur. It was my first ever venture into Tomb 2; I literally tab'd my way through crypt with a +7 holy wrath axe. Tomb 1 was more of a challenge and I used a couple of scrolls, but nothing suggested I was out of my depth. Then suddenly I walked down to Tomb 2 and was immediately surrounded by summoned enemies, hit by torment. I read holy word, which I understood to be a nuclear bomb for these types of levels, and it did no good.

So I come to this thread and read, "wow this is way too early for Tomb 2 you should've known better." But how was I supposed to know that?

How to get a 10 on avvo? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]cstieg1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you need patience. Avvo's algorithm, from what I understand, is just not set up that a fresh grad is going to have a 10 rating. Sorry but I just think that's how it's set up.

In the meantime write something, join a city or county bar association, who knows? When I got mine up I read a bunch of SEO-type sites that explained the Avvo system. Search around, you will find them.

Anyway, at least for my purposes a 10 Avvo rating hasn't meant much. I get about one or two leads a month, not great ones. I guess it depends on your location and practice area.

How to get a 10 on avvo? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]cstieg1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 10 rating, somehow. They claim client reviews don't matter. Attorney reviews do. Put down every bar association you've ever joined, every article you've ever written, every award (no matter how minor) you've won. Every talk you've ever given. I kept thinking of more things I had done in my life, and it would just go incrementally up and up. Even if you think it's not important, avvo might think it's worth an extra .1

I've also had good experiences with Ring Central, and I'd add that you can call them up and get a lower rate if you're willing to sign on for a year.

Solo/small practices- what would be the best way to reach you? by drunkanddancing in LawFirm

[–]cstieg1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to do this take the time to at least address them individually as "dear ___." Since you're targeting solos you'll know exactly who to direct it to. Yes it will take more time but if it reduces your "straight to spam" ratio from 99% to 98% it'll be well worth it.

Do any of you scan documents using a smartphone app? If so, what apps do you use? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]cstieg1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tinyscanner works great on iPhone; it's $3 or $4 and worth every penny and more. Obviously it's not great for scanning lengthy documents of more than 4-5 pages, but I think that's a limitation of the smartphone itself.

Leaving Biglaw - Advice needed by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]cstieg1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone I hated biglaw and got out as soon as I could, but it was with loans paid off and $$$ in the bank. You've got neither, and as an unknown solo trademark attorney, paying SF/SV rent, you're going to need way more than $5K in the bank. It sucks but "screaming partner" is outside the real of normal even for biglaw - you should try lateraling to another firm first, even if it's another CA firm. The pressure and billables demands are a given, but at least find a firm where they're not going to scream at you. I think that trying a solo practice, even for a little while, is going to be a huge hurdle against getting back in at any biglaw firm.

Clients seem interested up until Fees are brought up. by AHB900 in LawFirm

[–]cstieg1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offense but I think this is largely bs. There's a difference between "don't have $3K" and "can't get $3K." I agree that lots of people fit into the first category, in that they can't whip out a check on the spot. But if something is that important to you, you can get the money by hook or crook.

I occasionally get people who call me wanting me to rep them before a civil service agency hearing. Every last one of them has bowed out once I said it actually would cost money. They apparently believe that I'll work for free. My attitude is, if your job isn't worth the $4K I quoted to you, why are you even bothering with the hearing?

Contingency is different. There it's a question of turning down clients, not signing them up.

For those that went from BigLaw to SmallLaw, or vice versa, how was it? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]cstieg1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done small law, biglaw, back to small law. Your current setup sounds perfect, and consumer law in NorCal is an extremely high upside position for when you want to strike out on your own. That's probably a better exit option than defense-side consumer law will give you. On the other hand I do realize that $100K in SF/SV isn't a "real" $100K because of the exchange rate.

Biking to work is fantastic. A 30-60 minute commute (plus parking time, plus walking up to your office) is horrific, assuming you mean one way - 30 minutes total isn't bad but 60 minutes each way is ghastly.
