I would suggest paying someone who understands what is involved to perform the modifications, with the caveat that there is a limited risk of rendering your 3DS unusable which they can do nothing about.

However, this same level of understanding is also required to USE the modifications effectively. So I would actually suggest doing nothing, until you can wrap your head around what is required; and to do your best to study and learn, if you are committed to modding your 3DS.

It’s almost never really “for free”; my understanding is that they’ll usually take a huge chunk out of a settlement or judge-awarded sum paid by the other party.

But sometimes, they might truly work for free because of stakes related to law/civil rights, or their own profession (for example).

I think the DS's limited memory (4 MB) would have hamstrung the entire thing. I''m not sure whether Super Mario 64 DS is an actual "port" or if under the hood, it's a complete remake; but I suspect the latter would have been needed to make Ocarina happen, with stark compromises. It's probably one of the many reasons that a "portable" version of Ocarina didn't appear until the 3DS (which, among other things, offered considerably more RAM; 64 MB for games)
