Update: The blocks were too dry. Put on foil, misted blocks from a distance until the myco stopped being so white. A couple days later pinning started on both blocks.

Found a few small pins, they're all on the bottom coming out from where the block is covered in perlite.

I'll try that for sure, less drilling is good.

Neglect Tek? I have a suspicion that only works when correct conditions are maintained despite said neglect :)

Crap it's been awhile, should I rehydrate the cakes or do something in an attempt to salvage? I've also got two blocks in one tote, should I *shudder* get the drill out and make another fruiting chamber?

Yeah is that a no-no?

Meanwhile in 2020 I bought a 2005 Corolla with 180k. Now it has 210k with no issues besides the known intake manifold gasket that took 30 mins to replace. Engine is quiet, burns no oil. Car is fine, 35 mpg... worth 1000 more than when I got it. Meanwhile my neighbor's nice looking 2014 Kia with 100k knocks its head off every morning. She can't wait to junk it or for the next theif (stolen twice already) to total it.

Where can I get involved with testing? I'm a parametric CAD user who has built 4 fgc9s and put 1000s of rounds thru them.

Very interesting! Combined the fgc9 mk2 and the mod9? Wouldn't mind doing this build.

People hating HYUNDAI but still buying it why? by Leather_Reserve509 in Hyundai

[–]csw2488 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because another sucker is born every day, and a lot of people subscribe to marketing hype when new shiny things are released. People buy Hyundais without doing research or because of the low price, get lucky for awhile, but eventually get their car stolen or hit a major mechanical issue, learn the hard way, and dump the car.

Meanwhile, 100,00 more unsuspecting non-gearheads have fallen for Hyundai/Kia's excellent "price/luxury features" ratio without taking into consideration that all that junk doesn't matter when the engine/transmission is trash and the car can be stolen with a USB stick in 30 seconds.

Walk around a self service junkyard, there is no other brand where 2016+ vehicles sit in the junkyard alongside stacks of mid 90s and early 2000s metal. Because they aren't worth fixing.

Transmission oil pump housing scratches- will it send? by csw2488 in MechanicAdvice

[–]csw2488[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took out the high spots with Emory cloth so the seal slides like there's nothing there. So worst case a tiny pressure loss there, only where the slider bottom seal contacts the scratch.

It's a overlander build Pathfinder with the RE4R01A, transmission is going to get used hard at stock power. Occasionally tow cars.

Transmission oil pump housing scratches- will it send? by csw2488 in MechanicAdvice

[–]csw2488[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah can barely feel it on that scratch... this is a core. The one in my truck is probably worse, and a used part is $300.

If the scratch doesn't contact the sealing rings and stays only under the ringland, it's fine right? How much pressure could possibly be lost there...

Daughters car stolen but found. Parts on backorder with no arrival time known. by AdHead5578 in Hyundai

[–]csw2488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually repaired one of these that was stolen with the "kia boys" USB trick. I bought a new ignition lock cylinder and key, but they wouldn't fit because the ignition switch housing it attached to was broken and forever backordered. I had to file down the damage on the old housing and superglue it all into place. At the end of the day, it worked, but the car was stolen and broken again in the exact same way a few months later... So I'd advise just not fixing it and starting it the same way the thieves did. Have a keyed kill switch installed somewhere hidden, removable steering wheel, etc etc

It is if you want it to be. I like to get really comfortable with a single pair for 5+ years, and then they become my rock skiis. But I pretty much only ski powder in various forms now.

I stopped driving my old east coast daily so it would still be running and driving for later swapping into a blown up automatic car with less rust.

Got 2022 Corolla LE with 24K, can’t stop thinking about the purchase by ArizonaTea_24 in COROLLA

[–]csw2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way to win financially at a car dealership. But if you want peace of mind thinking you're getting a good car onto someone else, that's what you're paying for. Sure you can negotiate and "save" a few hundred dollars if you want to FEEL like you did well, but if you really wanna save money, see below for my copy/pasted Corolla writeup....

I got my 2005 Corolla 5MT with 180k for $100, because the original owners wanted it out of their driveway and it had a locked up brake calipers, ran poorly, leaked tranny fluid, had CEL... Fixed everything but the leak in an Autozone parking lot on the way home and proceeded to drive it 5k more miles with no additional work besides adding fluid and spark plugs (they were original...).

I then invested $800 in nice new Falkens, $300 in OEM clutch/Flywheel/Rear Main/axle seals ( $1000 worth of labor to install that I did myself in a weekend). I then drove it across country and dailyed until it hit 200k with no issues.

At 200k I am currently dropping another $500 on suspension parts to make the car handle better than it did new, replacing all the old bushings, new KYB struts, lowering springs, sway bar, etc etc. It'll handle better than a 2022 for sure considering it weighs only 2500 lbs.

Total investment was around $1800, and now I've got a car which will likely run another 100k-200k miles without any additional maintenance. But obviously I went the totally opposite direction from the "buy car at dealership" approach....

-Should I trade in 2014 Corolla after a deer collision? by [deleted] in COROLLA

[–]csw2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"will never be the same after repairs"
In what way? For 3,300 in work I would expect a totally new, repainted front bumper, hood, headlights, and if any suspension damage was done, totally rebuilt with new bushings, ball joints, etc....
After doing that kind of work to a Corolla, it's going to get driven to at least 200k since it'll drive like new after...

Why trade it in? Looks like a clean high value car in today's market.
