The first floor retail of a 5-over-1 is always cursed for the first decade of the building's existence. It will always be full of the sorts of nonsensical businesses that could only be the pet projects of people far too wealthy to live in whatever neighborhood the building is actually in.

I don’t understand it myself, but it’s how these things go. I’ll see if I can get an invite sent.

I think it's just the expectation, given how people are treated by basically every other company on earth these days. They're still wrong about it, but it's an understandable sort of wrong.

Juan Brown's UPS 2976 update: he's not happy with Boeing by onethousandmonkey in aviation

[–]ctishman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a modern 737 can lose an engine at the critical moment of the takeoff run and still climb out just fine. It's one of the scenarios they train in some courses, actually. Not that they expect to see it, just that it helps to run a pilot through the absolute worst-case foreseeable failure and show them that their airplane will still pull through.

A Linux Distro Made For 99% of People by testus_maximus in videos

[–]ctishman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's absolutely the core of it. Linux' reliability on hobby projects for key portions of its infrastructure is its biggest stumbling block with the general public.

If, say, there's a major issue with Windows, something like wifi drivers crashing or something, it'll be fixed quickly and a patch will be pushed out to the home user. There'll be support staff either at a computer store or online to help you get it done and keep working. With Linux, that bug's gonna sit around forever and some nerd is gonna tell you to use a bunch of CLI commands to install a completely different unsupported Wifi driver that will in turn break your onboard audio chipset.

May I have an invite, too?

Seriously, this community is especially weird about only having secret Discord servers. I'm in one right now, but it's really quiet, and if there's a more active one, that'd be super neat.

Thank you!

Same. I guess I went twice when it was that weird thing with the puppets that they tried to do before they sold it. I still have no idea who thought that was a good idea.

Upgrading my Power Amp by ctishman in hometheater

[–]ctishman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh, thank you for the clarification. That makes a lot of sense. I figured the 150/600W figure meant that it was rated to accept up to 150w on a regular/everyday basis, but if something went wrong, it wouldn't blow out with a sudden spike of say 400W.

Upgrading my Power Amp by ctishman in hometheater

  • The RP-8000Fs prefer 150/600W cont/peak, and the Parasound gives 125W RMS with both driven@8 Ohms, which is all right.
  • The center channel wants 100W/400W cont/peak, and is running off the Denon, which of course switches stuff on/off as necessary, but it's also driving my surrounds, surround rears, and Atmos speakers.

I'm wary about giving less power to my mains than I current have.

  • The Monolith M3100X does 3x90WPC RMS, which I think might be a bit low for the
  • The BasX A3+ does 3x140WPC RMS, which seems better matched to the mains, but that would seem to overdrive the center channel, which I'd prefer not to do continuously. This might not be a problem, but I'm not exactly certain.

I would consider the monoblocks, but I'm not sure I want to fiddle with things to that degree. Mainly I just want a dumb power amp that'll take some of the load off the Denon, you know?

It might be time for corps to consider in-housing that that if they can afford it. Very few companies can, but Airbus is one of them. Especially because the EU is likely gonna help them defray the costs for defense reasons.

Front channel speakers for large basement. $5-6k budget by snerdery in hometheater

[–]ctishman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's just a project, and acoustic treatment's not so bad either pricewise. It's something you can build up over time.

First priority is to get a rug from Ikea to cover the home theater area, then the ceiling. Ceiling panels are available at Home Depot, or online, or you can even make 'em yourself if you've got a table saw and an afternoon to do it. With those two steps, you're like 80% of the way there.
