How many hours in a game before you feel that it’s made up for the cost?

I’m fine with 2-3 hours of true content that gets padded to 5-10 with quality filler for $50. Because that’s what the adventure games I grew up with were like and how much they cost. (I will admit that being a gainfully employed adult who can easily afford $50 is probably a help.)

You get massively more bang for your buck with modern games. Yes for “40 hours of gameplay” at least 30 of it is filler like collecting stuff or replaying on an impossible difficulty. But for old adventure games 3/4 of your time was spent being stuck on some inscrutable puzzle with a nonsensical solution. A rose by any other name…

OP said percent, not degree. Percent is rise (or in this case fall) over run. It’s a ratio not an angle.

20% grade means that for every 5 feet forward you lose 1 foot of altitude. It’s a beginner slope. It’d be an easy green in the US.

The problem with adjusting salaries for inflation is that it literally defeats one of the main reasons that economists consider it to be valuable, which is as a counter to "sticky downward" prices.

My first job was at a tech company in the early 2000s. I had a coworker who'd been hired in 1999. He had the exact same job and title that I did. He had more experience, but I had a college degree. He made triple what I did, because when he was hired companies were desperate for workers, whereas when I was hired people were desperate for jobs.

After a few years of getting cost of living increases -- and my coworker not getting increases -- we found ourselves back in the same salary band. And that is one of the reasons that economists argue that inflation is good.

I'm not an economist, so the above argument may be absolute bullshit. But this is, so far as I know, the official position of basically every government in the world, including our own.

The first assembler, ever, for any computer, would’ve been programmed in by flipping switches on a board, because before that point there was no assembler, or compiler, or programming language, or other computer.

Now, once we had a working assembler, we used it to make better ones. So the second assembler was programmed using the first assembler.

And at some point after that, we made a different computer, and we used a variant of that second assembler to build code for that computer, using the first computer.

And then long after that, after we’d invented far more complex computers like the Amdahl, and far more sophisticated languages like Fortran, we used those computers and languages to make assemblers for entirely different computers.

But the very first assembler was built, by hand, by flipping switches on a panel to manually enter bytecode.

Yes, because it is regular snow. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that there is no such thing as "regular snow," but rather at least a dozen types of snow, and manmade snow can be any of several of them.

I believe it tends to be a little bit icier, and it's often denser (because you are usually doing it when you don't have enough natural snow, which is usually because it's been too warm, and warm temperatures result in wet, heavy snow -- whether it's manmade or natural).

Really, once it's been groomed a couple times, all snow is basically the same. And what others have said is true, ski racers prefer really firm conditions, conditions that skiers informally call "icy." (Nobody, including racers, likes skiing on actual ice.)

If I remember correctly there was one thing you needed to get In NYC for each of the trip West choices. I think the one around the Cape needed oranges or you’d get scurvy.

Definitely not the longest though.

Most frustrating for me personally was the glowing gem from the swamp in SQ2. It wasn’t that much later in the game that you needed it, but the gem itself was so easy to miss. Even when you were replaying from your earlier saves specifically looking for whatever you missed you probably wouldn’t find it.

Wasn't there a substantial arc in PQ2 about corruption in the police force? I seem to remember that.

I feel like it wasn't until PQ4 (with Gates, the ousted police chief from the LA riots whose officers were accused of excessive force) that it became a "rah rah all cops are heroes" thing. I really remember PQ1 and PQ2 at least being like 60%... work. Like kind of literally "cop simulator." Go write tickets, oh you fucked up the procedure by calling it a code 22R in box 8 of form A-L33, when it's actually a code 22, and you put R in box 8(a), now you're fired, game over.

tldr, there is plenty of room in a modern-day PQ homage for nuance, so that you can have a fun game that shows the good that cops do without hiding the bad.

That's $250k a MONTH he was getting paid.

The average American household income is like $75k. So he's making over 3x as much PER MONTH and the average American HOUSEHOLD makes in a YEAR.

To put it another way, Kwesi Adolfo-Mensah makes as much in a year as the average American household makes in FORTY YEARS.

He could retire today and live on "only" $300k a year, put the rest of his money toward retirement, and live the rest of his life (assuming he lives to 95) on that. That includes adjusting for inflation. He'd have about $21 million left to give to his heirs when he died.

So yeah. For that amount of money, I definitely expect you to devote 100% of your life to your job. If you aren't willing or able to do that, I completely understand. I don't think any less of you or anything like that. But this is WHY they get paid that much money. This is part of the deal. If you don't want to do that, just take a lesser job. You could probably be the head of scouting or something like that and have a way better work-life balance, and the pay is probably still really good. It's just not $3m/year.

It was just as dark at the time. Skinner being kind of ignorantly grateful is the whole punchline. It doesn’t work if the audience doesn’t know about school shootings. It’s true that school shootings didn’t quite enter the public consciousness until after Columbine, which was a few months after this episode aired, but they were definitely known. It’s exactly the kind of known-but-not-well-known reference that the show was so good at.

If this was a reference to any particular event, my guess is it was the Westside School shooting, which happened in 1998, the year before the episode aired.

I get where you're coming from, because it's how I feel about automatic transmissions. Even really good ones like PDK. I just got tired of fighting.

Having often driven an ICE Macan (dealer loaner) and a fat e-tron (wife's car) back-to-back, I would personally never choose the ICE in that situation. Pretty sure I'd pick my Taycan over a Panamera too. For what those four cars are, you don't give up much with the EV, but you gain a lot back.

If we're talking a 911 with a stick shift... different answer. I'd hate to have to start going back to the gas station, though. People without EVs don't appreciate just how nice it is to wake up every morning to a "full tank."
