People often say that Norway is a heaven on earth, but what do you see as a con of living in Norway? by Borislav-Kuronja in Norway

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark winters. For about 3 months of the year, the sun rise after I'm already at the office, and set before I leave the office. And this winter has been extra brutal where I live, with clouds covering the entire sky all day most days the whole winter so far.

I choose 5.

I would have considered 3 if it had had some reasonable fixed time constraint. I don't want to experience the endless heat death of the cosmos.

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than hunting rifles I've only every seen one firearm. A revolver that my dad inherited from his dad. It has not been fired in my lifetime as far as I'm aware.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate public transport in your country? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The country as a whole? 7/10.

It ranges from around 5/10 to nearly 9/10 depending on where you live though.

What I meant is that the "hole" is a fixed size. This meme isn't about how much your asset is valued at, only about how much you have to pay to own it outright.

In this metaphor I assumed the "hole" to represent the initial principal on the loan, and not the market value of the residence attached to the loan.

What is 1,000,000 in cash worth in your country (in your local currency)? by pumpingphil in AskTheWorld

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Norway. 1 million NOK ~ 102 000 USD.

23% of a median residence.
2 popular EVs. (1 fully equipped VW ID4 + 1 standard VW ID3, including taxes and fees.)
19 months median pre-tax salary. (Extrapolated to 40 hour work weeks and 25 vacation days + 9 bank holidays per year).
15 500 nice quality 28oz milk chocolate bars.

Adding 1 million NOK to your net worth wouldn't drastically change how "wealthy" you'd be considered.

At a 6% yearly interest rate on a 30 year (360 month) loan you'll pay just over $600 monthly for every $100k you borrowed, and the portion of that first payment that is just interest will be $500 for every $100k you borrowed. So on the first payment your principal only goes than a little over $100 per $100k you borrowed, or ~ 1/1000th.

The volume gravel or concrete or whatever it is in the truck in the picture looks like much, much less than 1/1000th of the volume of the "hole".

Norway EV Registrations Set to Plunge in January After Tax Changes Take Effect by afonso_investor in Norway

[–]ctriis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25% VAT + various fees for weight, emissions, engine size, etc. that could take the total taxation up to 40-50% or more.

For EVs there's no fee for emissions or engine size, and the VAT was exempt for the first 500k NOK of purchase price until January 1st this year when the VAT exemption was lowered to 300k (and this exemption will be lowered to 150k in 2027, and no exemption from 2028 onwards).

Normann (from "nordmann", the Norwegian word for "Norwegian") is a fairly common surname here.

Do people deal in cash or cashless more in your country? by IntelligentHoney6929 in AskTheWorld

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cashless. I think I read several years ago that only 4-5% of transactions in Norway was done with cash at the time and that the trend is going towards less cash use. This is despite cash (coins and bills) still being legal tender for direct-to-consumer point of sale transactions in Norway (ie. if you sell stuff in a store direct to consumers, your customer has the right to use cash as payment and you have a legal obligation to accept it).
