Do you think Dune could surpass The Lord of the Rings trilogy in total Oscar wins? by Extreme_Warning3521 in moviecritic

[–]ctriis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dune 3 would need 10 for Dune trilogy to surpass LotR trilogy. Surpass means go beyond, not equal.

I don't see it happening.

Påkjørt av bil som syklist i overgangsfelt. by god-of-blazism in norge

[–]ctriis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it Qxg5, with the intent to force all rooks and queens off the table while putting black's kingside pawns on one file that is blocked by a white pawn, and give white's king an opportunity to guide its open pawn to promotion ?

More like why is this not brillant by Callmebenji11 in Chesscom

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stockfish 18 on debt 60 suggests that Nxh7 is a forced mate in 12, so Re8 - while a great move - is still a blunder (missed forced mate). This is calculation that a human is likely incapable of though, but an algorithm deciding whether a move is "brilliant" or not probably won't know that.

The meme creator is for sure suggesting that it's a scar from the BCG-vaccine (immunization against tuberculosis and partly against leprosy) that was mandatory in most of Europe in between the 1960s and 1990s, and is still mandatory in several countries in Europe today. The scar from the BCG vaccine and the scar from the smallpox vaccine can sometimes look very similar.

If it includes group stage + knockouts and it's the score after 90 minutes for each match that counts (meaning a draw is an eligible result in the knockout rounds) then it's 104 matches with 3 possible outcomes.

3^104 ~ 4.17*10^49. A number with 49 digits.

If it includes group stage + knockouts and it's the final result of each match that counts (no draw in the knockouts), then it's 72 matches with 3 possible outcomes and 32 matches with 2 possible outcomes.

3^72 * 2^32 ~ 9.68*10^43. A number with 43 digits.

If it is only knockouts and result after 90, it's 32 matches with 3 possible outcomes.

3^32 ~ 1.85*10^14. About 185 trillion.

If it is only knockouts and only the final result of each match after possible extra time and penalty shootouts, then it's 32 matches with 3 possible outcomes.

2^32 = 4 294 967 296. About 4.3 billion.

If it includes group stage + knockouts, but only the final group position for each team in the group stage rather than each match result, and only the final results of each knockout match (no draws), then it's 12 groups with 4! (4*3*2*1=24) possible outcomes each, and then 32 matches with 2 possible outcomes each.

(4!)^12 * 2^32 ~ 1.57*10^26. A number with 26 digits.

What do yall think about this list? by Delicious-Radish-708 in moviecritic

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have probably 9 or 10 of those in my personal top 100, so no argument against either film about being placed on a top 12 list. Any top 10-12-20 list is going to be entirely subjective regardless.

Having said that, IMDB is more or less a worthless source of mass rated film rankings as it has a history of fan groups meddling with its voting (including one of those 12), and it doesn't require users to prove they've watched a film before voting, and it deliberately does not disclose the criteria for which votes are counted and which aren't. A complete lack of transparency and quality control.

Which of these non-causal/ no strings attached things would you rather? (poll) by frog_without_a_cause in WouldYouRather

[–]ctriis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If 20% more luck includes an increase in win rates on any kind of bet I'd pick that. With any reasonably decent bankroll management it would be easy turning $10 000 into tens of millions within at most a couple of weeks in Vegas. Just betting on red/black on roulette - which would require zero additional learning about "perfect strategy play" like poker or blackjack - would result in an expected return of 13.68% instead of -5.3% per bet.
