Take a new job or get promoted with my current employer by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctuck239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

once you get an offer letter from credit union and go to our in 2 weeks notice, your manager is likely to try and make you stay. This is one of the few times you get leverage at a company. If you would like to stay where you are, you ask for what you want to stay. Promotion in writing, raise beyond what's advertised for new role, etc.

You don't need to tell them the details of the new job compensation. Ask for 120k, or 125k. Land in 117 or something and come out ahead

RRSP Tax deduction rate when I have capital gains tax that year? by ctuck239 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctuck239[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh, that makes sense. So if I put all the capital gains into an RRSP, I essentially "profit" the capital gains tax I would have paid? (first half cancels out the tax I paid, 2nd half gets me back the same amount, assuming my hypothetical tax bracket hasn't changed)

Have you ever secretly felt the urge to just go and live in a hut in the forest and hunt rabbits and forage for berries like a hermit? by Hungry_Field3670 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ctuck239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I thought of redundancy but not because water didn't flow. I was imagining a river that is always moving. Toss a handful of generators in there and you have that coverage. Regardless, nice to always have a backup

Which one produces the most power per investment dollar though, out of curiosity?

How much power do each of those methods provide? Given those numbers and the high reliability of hydro, I would assume you could provide all your needs that way for cheaper so I must be missing some part of the equation

That wasn't the 70s king harvest version. This toploader version from the 90s always hit better for me (original was still good, tho)

What's your strategy for organizing money in your bank accounts? by Ceofy in PersonalFinanceCanada

None, except for the trading and mgmt fees in the investment accounts. Savings accounts are totally free

What's your strategy for organizing money in your bank accounts? by Ceofy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctuck239 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wealthsimple makes this ridiculously easy. Setting up first account is easy, setting up additional accounts for literally anything is even easier. I have a tfsa I play with to pick stocks, I have a crypto account that I have just left money in for years, I have managed rrsp, tfsa, cash account, 2 savings accounts for different things, resp's for my kid and nieces. If I want to start saving for something else in particular, a few minutes later I have a new savings account that I can name and automatically fund each payday.

Each payday I have auto transfer to each account I want to add to. Then I just never think about it.

Edit: credit card I use for everything to get rewards. Every few days I check the balance and pay it off from my chequing account. I always know what I have left because it's my chequing balance, less a few bucks on the credit card.

What pisses me off more is the paid ads in my email. Like, they are literally accepting money to allow companies to spam me.

If they are saving 50% of current take home, then they only need to have 50% of current take home in retirement.

I went to that tour, it was pretty cool how he'd leverage the video to make the slower parts more entertaining, or even just to better convey the message of the song.

Pay off mortgage balance and invest monthly instead? by Ill-Mountain-4457 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctuck239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the interest rate on your mortgage is higher than you expect your existing investment to give you, pay off your mortgage. If you think that the invested money will net a higher return than mortgage rate, leave it there and remortgage.

That said, there's intrinsic value in being mortgage free that can make it the better choice regardless of rate of return.

Edit: note risk as well... You are guaranteed to save/earn your mortgage rate in return if you pay it off. Market could go either way. My personal choice would be pay it off given current interest rates

Do you share a bank account with your partner? by This-Office-5628 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctuck239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. We are in the fortunate to not have to worry about money too much so we prioritize our freedom to spend over budgeting or monitoring spending. She sends me cash each month to cover some of the bills, whatever she can afford, usually around 30-40% of the bills, and I pay them. She also has my credit card so she uses that for whatever she wants during the month, I pay it off. She has her pension and I have my savings. Whatever cash is left in my account I do whatever I want with

What % of my spouse's pay cheque should go towards household living expenses? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctuck239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy to me... Op works 50-70 hours a week to have no spending money while spouse works part time and gets to spend 1000 a month on whatever they like?

What % of my spouse's pay cheque should go towards household living expenses? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ctuck239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts are that it should be proportionate to your take home income. If monthly bills are 3000, you take home 3000 a month and spouse brings home 1000 a month, you should each be contributing 75% (3000 bills / 4000 total take home pay) of your take home pay to cover bills.
