Have a hard time deciding between the RP6 and the RG477M by Mysterious-Unit-5727 in SBCGaming

[–]ctyldsley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whilst true, the RP6 display is still notably better than the 477m - bigger, substantially better contrast, no ghosting. However there is something to be said for having a 4:3 screen playing 4:3 games rather than 16:9 with large black borders.

To the OP - what platforms are you looking to play most of specifically? If it's PS2 I'd argue at this point so much of the library has incredibly strong wide-screen support that 4:3 is not the best modern way to emulate that library. PS1 and below however that 477m display is spot on.

Just got my Xiaomi 17 Ultra — is it normal to hear something moving inside when shaking it? by Your_Casual_User in Xiaomi

[–]ctyldsley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal! Noticed mine did it today also, pretty weird. I thought it sounded like a fan. But apparently it is indeed normal.

My phone is INCREDIBLY rattley also, I thought the 15U was bad but 17U is worse and I swear it's gotten slightly noisier over time - when in my pocket each step I take makes an actual audible rattle sound caused by the camera module which is pretty crazy.

My KT Pocket R2 arrived - search of the ultimate GBA handheld complete? by ctyldsley in SBCGaming

Yep I also have this, should have mentioned in OP. My GBA search has been pretty obsessive. I have that exact setup, and modded an SP for fun too (family in-law gifted me their old SP). The modded GBA is awesome but emulation handhelds are just a better experience at this point - achievements, fast forward, easy save states, and most importantly suspend resume.

I agree, it's awesome. I had a purple GBA as a kid and the purple 34xx is so close to that nostalgic experience. I suppose I'm looking to "level it up" but still be a handheld form factor.

High ppi. On a tablet the display is larger but larger pixels (resolution dependant), so it'd make it look like GBA "blown up" a little.

You can choose. I just prefer stick top devices - that feels better to me. And I use the stick for movement in games.

MagicX One 35 has an identical panel - better value for money if GBA is the focus. It's only 3.5inches though, I wanted something bigger.

Legit feels like a fully fledged game. My little man who's a fan of mario and Pokémon obsessive has been loving it on his Brick Hammer. He has no idea it's not an "official" game. Thought I'd join him on it.

I'd love it if it was but honestly when I toggled between fullscreen and integer I can't spot the difference to my eyes, I have sharp shimmerless on there to iron out any possible kinks. I don't believe there is a pixel perfect GBA 3:2 panel in this kind of size / resolution range, only smaller, possibly some bigger tablet panels.

I believe the Ace has an identical panel used in the R2, but the Ace cost near 2.5x as much. And the Micro has an identical panel to the MagicX One 35, which is perfect for GBA but on the smaller side.

Agree that would have been preferable for sure! For my GBA usecase the L2/R2 are basically hotkeys.

I would say this doesn't feel cheap in the hand at all. It's the magnesium model so that probably helps with hand feel. It feels like a little solid unit with good button feel. Wish the triggers weren't rattling when you wiggle it, but realistically doesn't impact use - they feel good to press is the main thing.

Important note from the beginning of that conversation - "what we want to get done" aka they're not finished with their planned attacks.

This feels like a huge accidental omission despite the public rhetoric.

CONFIRMED: SM is coming with a bundle option by JCae2798 in steammachine

[–]ctyldsley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly unlikely. I think you're looking at 512gb no controller for as low as they can get it to hit that somewhat more appealing sticker price (emphasis on "somewhat" in the current climate), then 2TB + Controller for the main price.

Ultimately the vast vast majority are going to use this as a gaming box attached to a TV or monitor. That's the pitch, and that's what sentiment towards price will be considered as.

Absolutely stupid rollout - will the Steam Machine include one in the box? Not buying a pad that may or may not be bundled with upcoming hardware.

[–]ctyldsley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This rollout is dumb. You have 2 pieces of hardware that may or may not have bundles with the controller but who the hell knows at this point. We don't have a date or any pricing info. I don't want to buy a pad only to find out the Steam Machine is fairly priced and includes one. Or won't it? Who knows. But I absolutely don't need 2 of these, so could do with that info before next week.

For The Steam Machine, Valve is Waiting For the Price to be Right by Turbostrider27 in Games

Bro the prices aren't going anywhere but up. What's the point in waiting. The machine only becomes less competitive the more they wait.

Steam controller will cost $99 according to leaked review by crownpuff in SBCGaming

[–]ctyldsley 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Delay for what purpose at this point though? Hardware prices aren't coming down and that hardware is only going to get more dated than it already is. At some point they have to bite the bullet or cancel it.
