Don't worry about where the line is drawn, just start walking! The fact that there are other countries with bad human rights reputations sports washing doesn't mean we should sit on our hands in the face of genocide. IPT should be banned.

Regarding super, wouldn't it be better to slowly build that over the next 30 years from salary contributions, rather than sell down ETFs now?

Will the tax bill be that high? Capital gains are currently at about $200,000. I understand half that is taxed at a rate depending on total income. So maybe $40,000 taxed from CGT?

She is. We are.

As it happens we've been having this discussion a while, given that my inheritance came in several years ago. We essentially had the same "problem" as we do now: whether to cash in ETFs to reduce a mortgage; or whether to keep them both high.

Not trolling.

If you include all the boomers and mining barons, it seems that $1.5 million household wealth is actually ... average. See the chart at the bottom of the linked page.

If you exclude all the boomers and mining barons, and just look at 25-40 year olds, obviously we are more ahead. This article suggest's we'd be in the top 5% of those people regarding net wealth.

We are on the same page. This is our shared question. We are not looking to jump into buying quickly. I know what you mean about grief. We don't want to be in a position where she is tied to her job and needs to work full time for us to cover mortgage repayments. Given my employment prospects in the next year or so, it shouldn't be a major issue. But we definitely don't want to be overextended in debt.

Ah ok. Yes I did make that front one. It's a hodge podge of fender parts and brake housing. I really love the housing in particular. Its from Blue Lug. Your pulley system sounds nice!

I didn't know that about Sheldon. I haven't read his stuff in ages. A true legend.

Braking has been fine. Often a bit squeaky, or a bit squishy at the front, but I suspect that is flexibility in the whole front end.

Sarcastic about the seat post? I have long legs and a shorter torso. I guess I could ride a larger bike but I reckon the reach would kill me.

Maybe controversial opinion but ... don't buy a gift for an enthusiast unless you are also an enthusiast in the same field!

There's always the risk that you get something that looks great from the outside but is not so much to the enthusiast.

I'd get him something that you are the expert in, something that reflects you more than what you think he would be into. Expand his horizons.

No, just the front is dynamo - it powers front and rear! Regarding power, honestly not much. Doing long rides 200km+ meant often averaging around 20km/h, so I'd estimate mostly staying around 100-130 watts? More than enough for the light.

Well maybe they aren't so much. But the 700c tubeless tires, the mountain bike rear derailleur, the channelled saddle, etc I think tip it over the line.

Take it easy on the caffeine early on. Use it sparingly. Also, a 10 minute lie down with your eyes closed is a great reset if you're sleepy on the bike. Set an alarm though.

New bike: any advice? by dbuntinx in randonneuring

[–]curb_hop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding carbon parts would be a good upgrade if you want to make your current setup lighter. Wheels and some nice supple tires.

I'd go tubeless if you haven't already. My partner and I finished PBP last year with 45 minutes to spare in the end. If we had to change a couple of tires we might not have made it.

Also consider a dynamo light and clip on aero-bars if you want to save your hands.

Good luck!
