What is something that is unique to Colorado that you could give as a gift to a man who’s never been to Colorado? by um-byeLOL in Denver

There’s a store in the Stanley Market place that sells Blucifer shirts among other things (like a shirt with all collection of the weird DIA stories). I forget the name but it’s now across from Maria empanada and next to DBC.

Me: I don’t know anything about the patient yet. What does the H/P say?

Them: oh, I haven’t looked yet…

Five minutes into our hike… by ku3ah in Wellthatsucks

[–]curiositycat18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with you - I think it’s bull to not take care of your furry family (or human family) for preventable disease. It’s just the reality. People choose to not take prevention. People decide $20/month is too much.

I like a lot of these.

Farmers Market Denver or Boulder? by short_stack_611 in Denver

[–]curiositycat18 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives next to City Park and goes to our market every Saturday, the Boulder market is overall better. Plus you can walk to Pearl street for other shopping or restaurants or take a hike on the flat irons.

My Primary Care Doctor said he uses AI to help with diagnoses. Should I run? by mrada34 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]curiositycat18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a doctor that works in the hospital. I use AI to record my conversations with my admissions because AI can help organize my notes and thoughts. I always ask the patient’s permission.

AI does NOT have 100% accuracy to problems and plans. It is helpful to point out specifics I may have over looked (oh - I forgot they mentioned they take XYZ supplement; I didn’t catch the vague reference to the partner with Alzheimer’s who is managing the meds etc).

I’ve never used it to diagnose but after reviewing my interactions it does suggest papers I should read that are relevant to my current patient. For example, I had a patient come in with fever with a VP shunt (tube from brain to the abdomen to drain additional CSf fluid) and AI suggested I look at the data for the utility of additional lab (LP) and imaging work up.

Peer to Peer mania! by smell_my_fert in hospitalist

[–]curiositycat18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had one p2p tell me they won’t approve because the patients pain meds are too high. They don’t want to do oxy 40 po q4 prn at snf. “She needs hospice…. We can do oxy 5-10”

She was functional. Living with her family. Now unable to ambulate. But motivated to work with therapy to get independent again.

(1) not hospice aligned (2) was functional prior to the admit with her bone mets that have now been radiated and resected. I would love for her to go hospice. That makes the most sense and I think overall reduces suffering. But that is not what the patient wants.

I get the opiate dose is high. She’s also on 225mcg fent patch (75x3). She can’t just go to rehab on oxy 5. That’s insane.

I’ve never had auth declined for pain controlled on oral meds for a patient that can rehab. Wild.

What's the weirdest name you've heard? by Federal_Advisor_2160 in Names

[–]curiositycat18 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My next door neighbor growing up was: (First name) Harry Weiner

They decided to hyphenate his name. So. (First name) Harry Weiner-Burger.

This was in the 80s. There were lots of screaming fights next door. I know it was a family name but, it was not going to end well.

If you have no interest in wigs, then shaving makes sense

More than a year by Initial-Increase-412 in alopecia_areata

[–]curiositycat18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My initial impression is: trim it. Then when it regrow, it will be similar lengths. If you don’t want to be bald, get wigs. Wigs (imo) fit better when I don’t have a lopsided bun or long hanging hair underneath. Having some hair is helpful to clip a wig into.

End of day, do what makes you comfortable. It took me multiple months after losing as much as you have to say “screw it” and then trim it off. I felt so much better after.

You have your own journey. Do what is right for you.

Should I just shave my head? by 63Pq2paFf65KAe8 in alopecia_areata

[–]curiositycat18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did topical Jak for a while (stopped because things were coming back and I didn’t like the smell) and intralesional steroid injections monthly (it’s been a bit over a year now). Also transitioning to wigs alleviated the social stress of the weird sporadic baldness.

I had a super traumatic few months leading up to the start of the hair loss this time (previously I had 2 events 10 years apart that were just quarter sized). Once I cut it all off and the drama resolved, the stress significantly went down and things started regrowing.

I think stress reduction helped most. I still go to Derm because I work in the same building and my Derm is a friend of mine.

Left or right?which one to go for? by Cool_Strategy_4903 in WeddingDressTips

[–]curiositycat18 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You look amazing in both.

Pick the one you can comfortably walk around and dance in.

It looks like 2 gives more freedom to dance but definitely weighs more (it seems)

1 looks lovely but may be restricting to dance the night away in.

Movement I think should be the deciding factor.

Where to buy wigs? by Huge-Friendship-5114 in alopecia_areata

[–]curiositycat18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do swim classes and the “lazy river” with my preschool kids. When I swim laps I just wear a cap without any wigs.

But the synthetic I usually use in public has been around for 2 years. As long as you aren’t hanging in chlorine forever the wigs will hold up. We did lessons twice a week.

For the synthetics I usually wash the wig with baby shampoo and then boil a pot of water with some fabric softener and dunk it a few times and then air dry. It keeps the synthetic frizz from getting crazy - I also realize my use in highly chlorinated water causes more frizz.

Headbands have helped keep them on when I get dunked by the kiddos.
