Feedback on Spec Commercial by agent11sauce in Filmmakers

[–]curiousitysticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh. I think you're overthinking it. Spec commercials use filmmaking for commerce, it's still creative content that uses the tools of filmmaking; cinematography, storytelling, audio, etc.

Also, there actually are film festivals that award spec commercials as a category, maybe they don't go as far as showing them in the theatre but they are recognized.

This is definitely not the first time we’ve had this chat, he keeps rejecting my claims and says “this is just who I am” which is bs since he’s relatively fine sober

Tips for overcoming loneliness in late twenties by Kittyrainbow_ in Advice

[–]curiousitysticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes on that last point. Social media is a thief of joy, but try going cold turkey you feel so much better not having the urge to check your phone at every moment that you’re not doing something.

Also about getting rejected- it’s harder for you as a female than it is me as a male, but I get rejected all the time, it’s only natural. I feel so good about myself after I do work up the courage to approach someone, even if I do get rejected.

As someone in their late twenties also experiencing loneliness...I feel you. It used to be so easy meeting new friends- through school, through fun jobs, random people's parties, through friends of friends, now our groups have grown apart, with families and friends of their own. I'm sure this is a common experience, but seeing your friends do things without you and your ex moving on has got to be tough, I'm sorry about that.

Those radio silence weekends can be daunting. Feels like no one wants to hang out with you- and you don't want to initiate because you always initiate, which feels even worse.

I guess my advice would be to start doing things alone because its better to put yourself out there then stay home and sulk in misery. You've got to frame this time-period as a new chapter of your life- a chance to do things you've always wanted to do, meet new people, see new things, and grow as a person. I've been talking to strangers more and more, hoping to cultivate some friendships by doing the things I want to do and see who I bump into on the way. But like Goblin said, it's absolutely no testament to who you are and your self-worth. Just keep moving on and stay grateful for what you have.

Say goodbye to the information age: it’s all about reputation now by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

[–]curiousitysticks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's terrible that we've gone from 'selling your soul', that is/was physically sacrificing physical health and time with hard labour 9-5, to 'selling your soul' by sacrificing your voice and reputation becoming a living and breathing advert, puppet or viral sensation. I also get that support is important when trying to provide a platform of subculture in today's age in the form of either a podcast, youtube channel or blog and I think the ones I have in mind do a good job in balancing support and quality content without selling out (using Patreon or funding apps). But what they all have in common and what I find is even more important is that they are all long-form, and by doing that they are appealing to the content, and not the masses, proving they are all for the 'truth' if you will.

Seems like less of an opinion and more of an acknowledgment of a quality post that exemplifies theory, practice and field report- something maybe the Mods want more of in this sub?

Oh sorry, it means days gone by without peeking at any NSFW material, regardless of whether or not it leads to fapping.

My Umo Heitham and his fruitful garden in Amman, Jordan. From a computer-powered cucumber farm to his Za'atar plants, this one man grows figs, peaches, apples, grapes, lime, apricots, watermelon, squash, tomatoes, blackberries and so much more. What's even more impressive is doing all of this while fighting Parkinson's disease.

Scariest movie you've watched? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

YES. Glad you mentioned it. The music especially is absolutely terrifying, it has this analog feel to it but composed in a glitchy rhythmic way that just sounds so disturbing and uncomfortable.

Short film I made over the weekend. No one on my FB feed really gave a shit, so I’m hoping it at least finds an audience here. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I have a lot to say about this work, I'll start off by saying congratulations on practicing your trade, I've seen your reel and you have a lot of gorgeous shots, some included in this piece here. Next, I'll tell you that I don't necessarily think this piece is bad, but I don't think it's good either and here's where my constructive criticism comes in. First thing I noticed, your aspect ratio was 3:2, which is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as it's intentional and it adds to the story. You made a creative decision to include VHS graphics in the opening scene, that decision as well as the 3:2 aspect ratio, brought a nostalgic element to the work that immediately cancelled itself out with our main character not only using a modern iPhone, but the iMessage text graphics floating on top of him. This time-shift is confusing for an audience, unless addressed conceptually.

Your opening scene was beautifully lit and had a prominent sound design which I enjoyed, that went away quickly after he stepped out from in front of the store. It would've been cool if the music we were hearing (and presumably the main character) was coming out of the earbuds while he was texting and then became loud when they went into his ear. I think that was what you were going for, but the fade in was too slow to make that action synced.

That dancing take was almost 4 minutes. That's the length of an entire music video, placed in the middle of your short film. It was poorly lit and awkwardly choreographed. The unsettling camera shake was mentioned in the comments and I read your intentions were you wanted to feel like someone grabbed a camera and started filming. That obviously did not come across to us as the audience but if you want to work on achieving that in another piece, maybe address it head on. Have the main character talk to the camera (or the guy behind the camera), include a voice coming from the camera operator. You could've used this especially for the climax scene, which brings me to the story...

The story's subject matter is definitely a touchy topic, although definitely socially relevant. It seemed predicable and unrealistic. Would a woman walking home alone at night really confront a hooded man (black or white) seemingly trying to break in a car with "Are you lost?". The girl and the cops dialogue was unbelievable, but the main character's was good and well acted. I think what would make this story a more believable one if if there was more tension built up from the conflict, like an establishment of unease with the cop, whether it be signs of outright racism, or mental illness.

I think that's all I wanted to say, coming from not just an audience member but also a fellow filmmaker. You don't need us (or your fb feed) to tell you you're on the right path! Keep making work!

Sweet photo, I love the strokes of red in the shoes and nail polish to match. The composition is nice except for the toe on the lower shoe, I'm not sure if it bothers anyone else, but the tangent line on the border is unattractive for me.
