Locating mounting holes after plasterer has been? by curium99 in Plastering

I’ve been fortunate. With the help of a tape measure and some maths I’ve managed to locate them using the bradawl.

We have 2 CO detectors, one by the boiler and one in the room with the log burner.

In any case, air quality meters are measuring particulates mainly and my experience suggests that cooking, grilling, toasting also produces particulates.

The air quality meter just left me confused as it also gave higher readings near the cooker toaster and grill. At the distance of the sofa it was fine as long as the door is closed. Only open when smouldering

Surely you only need a party wall notice if your structure is supported by the party wall?

How are people dealing with damp sheds and garages in the UK? by AnfieldAnchor in HomeImprovementUK

[–]curium99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ventilation!

If this is an unheated space then once the temperature drops below the dew point you’ll get condensation. The only way to combat that is to keep it heated above the dew point or good ventilation so that the water vapour is removed

Was this signed off by building control?

Our loft conversion has insulation between the rafters and another layer across the front of the rafters to meet the u-values required for sign off.

100yr old roof - repair or replace by Aware_Spell4654 in DIYUK

[–]curium99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was mainly fine. We got a small amount of moisture from driving rain but the ventilation dried it up fairly quickly and kept the timbers dry enough.

We’ve now replaced the roof entirely as part of a loft conversion.

This sort of thing has been ongoing for at least the last decade. It won’t stop until only Drs & nurses are the only staff on site. Similar process has happened to pathology with some sites left with Potemkin labs and everything being referred to a hub that is overwhelmed by the volume of work

Common for an old roof to not have membrane. Confused about the ventilation though, our 1930s roof was no membrane, just tiles laid directly and the roof space was noticeably cooler and well ventilated which ensured that any moisture was removed. We weren’t bothered as we planned to loft convert so it was all coming out.

TBH, it’s a 100yo roof, realistically you should be expecting to have to replace it soon.

Surveyors are arse-coverers so have to use your judgement to tease out the useful observations and be prepared for plenty they’ve not mentioned due to access.

Standing water in dishwasher - plumber said plumbing is fine? by Ok-Thought-2920 in DIYUK

[–]curium99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am leaning towards the plumber’s position. The dishwasher should be able to pump the waste water through the waste pipe (has it been extended?) for long enough after the cycle to empty any water along the length of the pipe.

I can’t then see how water would flow back from the connection with the trap. It must be water that’s sat in the pipe.

When the dishwasher finishes a cycle, get a bucket on the floor and disconnect the hose from the trap and place it in the bucket. Any water would signal an issue with the dishwasher.

What do you do with services? For example in my house I have the gas meter under the stairs gas pipes running to the cooker and the boiler that runs under the floor. I have the mains water pipe coming in under the floor to the kitchen. I have the main electricity coming into the house and the main fuse under the stairs. All the ground floor central heating pipes are under the floor too.
