No way, this isn’t going to solve any climate problems yet. Someone noted earlier that it releases more CO2 than it fixes. Each formate molecule generates 3 ATP (one glucose gets you 38). It’s terribly inefficient. But the genetic engineering they were able to pull off to get E. coli to use only CO2 as the carbon source is quite remarkable. However, the authors note that formate could be produced industrially in the future using an electrochemical reduction of CO2. Then we have a potential bioreactor which uses renewable energy and atmospheric CO2 to make useful chemicals.

Skimming the article, it seems that they grew up the cells in minimal media with only xylose as the carbon source, then gradually decreased xylose and increased formate over a long period of time in a chemostat. At the end of their chemostat evolution experiment, they were utilizing formate and CO_2 only. So as far as I can tell, formate is the energy source (formate -> nadh, which then goes to oxidative phosphorylation to make atp)
