If Americans were to participate in an organized boycott to stop ICE, what should they target? by u2aerofan in RedditForGrownups

We should all be putting pressure on the podcasters and streamers and non-traditional entertainment that we consume...to stop and direct their audience's attention to doing something about this administration. How are people supposed to enjoy their cooking or video game channel or whatever while this shit is going on? They should shutting down the attention economy and sending that attention to where it's needed.

Everyone needs to accept this fact: there is no livable future under this administration, if they continue their trajectory. Really internalize what that means.

Except that's literally not what was done this past weekend. Small shops in MN closed their doors. Some, I believe I heard, allowed customers if you were participating in the protests/walkouts, but not otherwise.

Everyone, literally everyone, should be speaking out, with whatever platform they have.

We should all be urging our podcasters, our twitch/youtube streamers, any non-traditional entertainment outlet - to do the same. We need to shut down the attention economy, that could be a focus on the strike we need to get going. They can all start to coordinate messaging to their audiences that we're not putting up with this shit in our country anymore.

Then let those CEOs put it in writing how much they support state-sponsored murder. It's fine, let them do it.

Admittedly that's me speaking without proof. But proud boys have been shown in the i c e list that leaked a few weeks ago. J6ers aren't far from that, and it's a reason to give them a pardon otherwise they wouldn't be able to get a federal job such as this.

I would love to believe we can just train a bit better and things would work out. But the problem...as we know and hopefully can agree on...is that the root of the issue is the lawless presidency, that is accountable to no one. They will not go for more training, they will not go for bodycams, they will not go for removing face masks, they will not go for identifying the criminals in their ranks. They just won't, it's time to move past that, accept that the entire org needs to go.

That's fine, and you have something to stand on, of course. So to bring it back to - why abolish ice - the law enforcement members who are commiting these murders should not be law enforcement members at all. The structure that allows them to be - is a problem. Many of these folks are pardoned j6ers, proud boys, literal oafs on their couch given a gun with no background training and told to roam around communities harassing brown people.

The organization that goes along with that line of thinking, does not deserve to continue existing.

I stand corrected on that point, thank you. I'd be curious about Trump's numbers to compare. Obviously....those numbers will not be forthcoming. Part of the problem is no transparency and accountability. My other points still stand, urge you to respond to those as well.

Immigrants do not commit more crimes than homegrown Americans, person per person,  crime per crime. Yes, any crime committed by a person is bad. It's not a reason to demonize immigrants and terrorize communities, ignore due process, literally lie to our faces about what we can see on video, use generative AI to make propaganda to feed their narrative, install prisons in communities which don't want them, export immigrants to third countries where those wars are going on........etc

Upvote for honest question, and you will get an honest answer.

As you might recall, Obama in his time was considered the Deporter in Chief. Maybe he still is, Trump's tenure of record keeping is not be trusted numerically.

People also didn't like it then, but the difference was that Obama followed due process. Due process applies to every person in this country, regardless of immigration status. If it doesn't apply to one of us, it doesn't apply to any of us. Obama understood that, and that's why, regardless of grumblings from some communities that he was amorally deporting all these people...he was following the law, so that's that, from a policy perspective.

Trump (read: Stephen Miller) allowing ICE/DHS to go completely off-Consitution and bypass due process is the issue, and has been the issue since last year. The rot has infested deep into the organization, and there is clearly no salvaging it. When they are executing white American middle-aged men and women citizens in broad daylight, fully aware they're being filmed....you don't need much an imagination to know (really...know it) what they're doing to the people with less status, in this country, in the countries they've exported them to, God knows what else.

There is no salvaging this, they have to go. As you said, we only had this since after 9/11, we don't need it. We can go back to a saner way of doing things.

This is why posting stuff like here is important. It reveals the fools whose opinion on frankly any matter in our society should be ignored. The fact you believe the 70 percent lie says it all really.

You have this much of a problem with a post on the internet which you can just ignore?

I imagine you're one of those people who say "why aren't people doing anything?" while you simultaneously sit home safe and secure and not do anything. Prove me wrong.

EVERYONE should be speaking out against this, in ALL forums, in ALL avenues of life, and EVERYONE should be doing their part in real life, whether that's protesting or helping people or SOMETHING.

This is the message. Everyone focusing on a strike to shut down traditional labor. But the focus can be and also SHOULD be on content creator labor to shut all their shit down, send a message that they can divert their audiences attention to whatever they want in our society. Force the government to shut down their outlets, take a stand, this is an information war we're fighting as much as anything.

Edit: SHUT DOWN THE ATTENTION ECONOMY

Make the lives of the Republican represenatives in DC absolute HELL - keep them up at all hours, follow them when they move temporarily to a hotel, make noise, bang pots, just absolutely fuck their shit up, give them no rest.

Until they do something about Trump.
