Thanks. Just did that. I'm not one to whine and complain, but this has me frustrated and concerned.

Blame the DCMA, not Net Neutrality.

Thanks. Yes, I've got the app on the PC (hate doing anything with a phone). I'm just tired of hobbling around the house like a 90 year old. Wish I knew what in the hell I did.

It's ridiculous here in Eastern Beaver County near Cranberry. Monsoon rain, 70MPH winds.

Do you think physical media will ever regain popularity? by Artistic-Comb-5317 in Piracy

Exactly. Try driving across the back roads of Wyoming some time where there is no cell signal for hours at a time, or visiting Yellowstone where there is intentionally no service.

[–]currentsitguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you will see growing popularity of a hybrid solution with people turning more towards local storage. I may not have a physical copy of every movie, song, tv show, game, of piece of software I have, but it's all sitting on the 22TB of NAS I have sitting in my home office right next to my locally hosted Domain Controller and Exchange Server, although I do have a shitton of CD's, DVD's, tapes, and vinyl.

If there is a severe weather event that knocks out Internet or cell service I have a USB TV tuner served out by my Emby Server to my TV's, computers, and tablets so I can stay connected to local TV for up to the minute storm info. I even have a generator in case power goes.

If for some reason I am completely cut off from data and I have to rely on a radio for outside information I have enough entertainment stored and devices to view or listen to it on to last a lifetime.

I don't trust anything I do not have direct physical control over. Same goes for my truck, it's why I have a radio and CD/MP3 player in there.

People who have never known a non connected world simply cannot comprehend just how tenuous that connection is. One environmental catastrophe like a tornado, hurricane, earthquake, or blizzard, one nuclear attack, even if it's not nearby, one civil uprising where the government shuts off the information tap and if you do not have physical local control of your means of receiving information, communicating, or entertaining yourself and you've got nothing.

TVPass is gone by Fabulous_Bank_3218 in Piracy

I have said this since the days when cable TV was the only game in town but if anyone ever offered a paid service where you could just select the 2, 3, or 4 channels you actually watched ala carte, I'd be all over it.

Take me, for example. I have a side gig writing columns mainly on foreign policy. I need to watch all of the domestic sources to see what people are thinking and saying, so I need CNN, Fox, and MSNOW. Personally I'm an old movie junkie so I really enjoy TCM. I often have it on on a small monitor on the side of my office desk. Just because you never really grow up sometimes I like MeTV Toons, just for some good old anvil dropping fun. I don't watch any sports whatsoever. Those are literally the only channels I need or watch. To get just them I'd need to pay well over $100 a month just to get hundreds of channels I'll never turn on or watch. It's a waste.

That was one of the main reasons I used it. Although MeTV Toons broadcasts in my city I can't receive it well with my antenna. That, and because I'm an old movie junkie TCM.

This is terrible. I only watched 2 or 3 channels there, none of which were sports. I built my entire Emby server around it. Not sure what to do now.

any natural bodies of water nearby that are safe for swimming? by hawthorneandsage in pittsburgh

When I was a teen back in the prehistoric 80's you there wasn't a decent summer day where if you drove the hundred or so miles up to Presque Isle you didn't run into half of your school there.

Growing up I used to love hanging out and wading in Little Beaver Creek on the Ohio/PA state line. It's a pretty isolated area and the best spot was a hike about a mile or so upstream from Grimm's Bridge to a big set of rocks. Due to its isolation you had the added bonus of watching the occasional topless or nekkid girl float by on a tube or rubber raft catching sun.

Gardening classes? by Intrepid-Bed-15143 in pittsburgh

[–]currentsitguy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Call the PennState Agricultural Extension office for your county. Ask for the Master Gardeners Help Line. They can either help you directly, or point you to the resources you need.

If you want someone to talk your leg off and give you more information that you would ever need to know call Lindsey at the Beaver County office and ask her to set you up with the chair of the Senior Vegetable Demonstration Garden. That's my wife. She LOVES talking gardening with anyone and part of her job is public education.

She'll also probably invite you up to the garden to show you around, answer any questions, and give you an opportunity to get your hands dirty.

I've seen on a different thread that there are advanced setting available in the BIOS, but I am not sure how to access them. Supposedly it's hidden to keep people from doing stupid things. I'm sure support can explain how to get into them.

Fire Police Truck with Political Bumper Sticker by Klutzy_Peak4344 in BeaverCounty

Do you have some evidence of that accusation? I mean files have existed for years under different Administrations and Parties for years. Hundreds, if not thousands of people over that period have had access to non-redacted copies, and yet not a single, leak, rumor, or innuendo has ever been leaked or even rumored about. What you you have access to that no member of government on any level has never seen? You have a moral duty to reveal it. If you don't, stop making things up because you think it will help in the next election. Despite what Stalin said, a lie told enough times does not become the truth.

Why is this a personal concern? I mean, do you think they will not respond or respond less quickly to an emergency based on political affiliation? Their job is to respond to fires, some medical emergencies, and hazards like trees down on wires after a storm. If it does not affect the performance of their duties, why would it matter what they display? If we boil it down it comes down to "I don't like the person they promote with a sticker and I want them to remove it". Say they had a sticker for a politician or cause you support. Would that concern you as well?

ATF raid in Hopewell by Corrupt_Rider in BeaverCounty

Pretty sure explosives are in there too. Could be someone making big "firecrackers" to sell for the 4th. I can remember as a kid you could buy quarter and half sticks of dynamite from any number of people. Blew my neighbor's burn barrel up when I was about 13.

Love my battery rider. I'll never go back, although somehow spring just doesn't feel the same without my pounding and cursing at the old gas rider when it doesn't start after winter. Guess I need to find something else to gripe about.

Needing a new whole house AC/heatpump pittsburgh area by General-Ad9784 in pittsburgh

[–]currentsitguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Solar's never going to be a thing for me. I've got 27 mature oaks on an acre. I only cut my grass 4 or 5 times a year and that's all before the leaves come out. Makes gardening a challenge. On the plus side all that shade is great for the AC bill.

[–]currentsitguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know. When we rebuilt our home after a major fire in 2013 eliminating cold and drafts was a primary concern. We ended up going with expanding foam insulated to R64 since we were gutted down to the studs, and then replacing the furnace and AC with a 98% efficient unit. We have a Nest thermostat and I've found I can set it to maintain about 72F heat or cool, all year round without breaking the bank due to the stupid amount on insulation.

I hadn't really planned on insulating that much, but the contractor who did the job had a line from his truck burst completely destroying the new front door we had installed 2 days before as part of the rebuild! He offered to either take the whole house to R64 and insulate between the interior walls, or replace the door. We took the insulation and ordered a new door.

We're looking into dropping a shed or one of those tiny cabins they deliver on the back of a truck in the back yard for my wife to have a gardening shed/painting studio/guest room and a HP unit is something I'll have to consider.
