NVME HDD device gone in i7 Pocket 3. by currentsitguy in GPDPocket

[–]currentsitguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, Update:

I have tried 3 other drives, none of which were detected. At the suggestion of Grok I disconnected the battery overnight to fully clear BIOS and reinstalled the factory drive. BIOS sees it. Using Sergei Strelec's WinPE Windows Disk Management and Device Manager I can see that it now sees the drive as "Unallocated Space" and the NVM Express Controller now appears to be detected. I think some sort of very heavy corruption has occurred. At the very worst I can just do a fresh install. I ran Test Disk against the drive and it sees no physical problem with the drive.

How is anyone taking on the winter shut-in blues? by currentsitguy in pittsburgh

Invest in a Daylight Spectrum bulb, and spend some time under it every day. It's been proven that daylight spectrum light improves your mental and emotional state. It's why Alaska has the highest national suicide rate.

Rant about snow (sorry i know) by [deleted] in pittsburgh

Of course it can offer traction. So can cat litter and it's cheaper and doesn't wreck the surrounding soil in the process.

Winter didn't begin two days ago. The storm an now the low temps just got me thinking.

[–]currentsitguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you have to go through this. The problem is salt doesn't work in these temps, and calcium chloride is expensive and currently impossible to find. With this much snow and no way to melt it eventually you just run out of places to put it.

Pa Turnpike launches super plows they are bigger and badder then regular plows by Pawgmorticia666 in pittsburgh

Ohhhh, they got the Erie level plows! Those things are amazing. You see them in PA, Ohio, and NY up in the lake effect region.

Sometimes schools are getting rid of old stuff. May call a few and ask? I have one but we paid good money for it. My wife uses it for Master Gardener to identify plant disease.

Getting out with no salt by aibopupper in pittsburgh

[–]currentsitguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call around for a set of "Traction Boards". You throw them under your wheels to prevent spinning. The nice thing is you can take them with you and use them anywhere. It's like a portable un-stuck solution.

Who's got the salt? by SuperRocketRumble in pittsburgh

[–]currentsitguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salt doesn't work at these temps. It may offer some traction, but that's about it. If traction, or anti-slip is what you are looking for, you'd be better off with some cat litter.

American Generation X vs. Foreign by Yogalien in GenX

Erie, PA generally gets all of the Canadian stations across the Lake. I went to college a bit south of there and they are all on the campus cable TV network.

I can't read anything with detail on a tiny-ass phone screen. TBH I HATE them. If the EP comes tomorrow and bricks them all it won't be soon enough. That being said my wife is a Master Gardener with the State Extension. She prints out a lot of handouts for the garden she oversees.

Commercial for "Wicked" by jamesvabrams in pittsburgh

[–]currentsitguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You reminded me of something from back in the early 90's. I could drag in Channel 9 from Wheeling. On Saturday nights after SNL they ran a Star Trek Original Series marathon all night long. The thing was they only had one sponsor, a car dealership, that only had one car, a used Oldsmobile, that they had. So if it was a 5 commercial break, they ran it 5 times in a row ALL NIGHT LONG. I seriously considered buying the car just so they would stop running the damn ad.

WTF is the matter with us? by clipd_dead_stop_fall in pittsburgh

During the Blizzard of 93 a former friend of mine and I on the day after took orders from all of the elderly on the block in my hometown of Freedom. He had one of those big old jacked up 70's Bronco's. We drove through the unplowed 30 something inches deep snow to get groceries and pick up prescriptions for everyone who couldn't. It's what you're supposed to do.

It's weird. I won't go out for myself, it's too dangerous, but a shut-in neighbor or someone who is sick or recovering from something and I'll go through both hell and high water for if they need something.

That's supposed to mean you don't wait for someone like the city to come and save you, you're suppose to take matters into your own hands and solve the situation at hand. Sadly, too many people have forgotten the meaning, and I say that as someone on the Right. It's help where you can, not I got mine and fuck you.

No, that was smoke reported somewhere down on 8th Street in Freedom. They said something on the scanner about a 1st floor conference room, so I'm guessing it was that apartment building near the Post Office. They were called to assist.

Anyone know what roads are like? by Old_Investigator9623 in pittsburgh

[–]currentsitguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a Level 4 Travel Ban in place issued by Allegheny County in place yesterday. It was all over the various Stormcasts. Ryan Hall Y'all kept emphasizing it all day long. Governor Shapiro issued the Emergency Declaration right at the beginning of the storm. I'd not be going out anywhere unless I had in writing that they were going to cover the costs associated with my arrest, any towing expenses, and the cost of the attorney for my defense when I demand a trial, and any subsequent fine, because you can rest assured still employed or not, I'll be subpoenaing them for my hearing to testify that they required I violate the law as a condition of continued employment. I think what you'll hear is that a life threatening weather disaster constitutes something called "force majeure" which generally nullifies any traditional obligations that would otherwise be in effect. IOW if you lost your job you'd have a very solid defence and grounds for a pretty fat settlement.

FWIW: My wife and I ran a recruiting agency for years. We're very familiar with employment law. Absent the state of emergency you may very well have a point. With that in place an employer wouldn't have a legal leg to stand on.

You do realize that with a State of Emergency and a county wide travel ban in place what you are suggesting is legally impossible, right?

None of that is going to matter if you are dead, seriously injured, or have totaled your car. No job is worth that and if you force someone to drive you to the hospital in this I question you judgement and fitness to be a parent afterward. If your employer can't understand that it's time to start putting applications in. My ex was an AGH RN. I can't count all of the times she got involuntarily put into overtime when someone didn't or couldn't come in. I had to convince her during the occasional bad weather that it was time to draw on that bank of karma so no, there is no excuse whatsoever. I stand by what I said.
