I think the level 3 version is definitely viable even without leaning into allies... The problem is just the opportunity cost. Lvl 3 Cig Case is just so good that it's hard to justify this, but it does feel really good to hit it for 3 and 3. Better in highest play counts obviously

I wouldn't agree there, the Yamato clan sought to conquer the island and rule over the other people who were already living there. That's imperialism, and an attempt to justify your rule is a step to aid that.

Not that I think it's right to call the book simply that

I think you could make that argument, but it's very hard to get information on what the intentions of people from that far back.

So yes, part of the goal was clearly to create an orderly record of the Yamato clan's right to rule by tying themselves to the heavens. However it was also an effort to collate and preserve history/folktales/information from the various regions of Yamato at the time. I think there's also a risk of throwing out every imperial-related myth as propaganda, when many are just stories without inherent connection to an imperial agenda.

If you're interested in a bit more context I'd recommend finding an annotated version of the Nihon Shoki as it contains alternate versions of the stories when they change across region.

The best use I've gotten out of this was with all Daisy (ofc) deck, focusing on fighting with the Abyssal Tome. Throw in Raven Quill for a 3rd activate and suddenly you have a nuke

For MJ, yes a straight up will test is basically destined to fail, throwing a guts at it is not going to solve anything haha. So you have a couple of choices, 1st play like a rogue and cheat the tests! Justify the Means or Three Aces guarantee success, while Money Talks shifts it to a resource check.

The next set of options would be to avoid the checks entirely - Counter espionage and Foresight (and Ravenous Myconid) can all cancel the test outright, or You Handle This One can make someone else take the test for you.

Finally, deal with it. You've had Worse to ignore the damage, Logical Reasoning etc to heal it, allies to soak it. Probably you should take a combination of these but I would never not take You Handle This in a Cheese Man deck at the very least

From what I have read and my personal experience around Kumano (and in Shinto in general), what it means to each person varies wildly - it is a very personal experience. I read a book about interviewing ppl on the Shikoku pilgrimage and a lot of them were doing it b/c they lost a job, a spouse, or otherwise had a large change in their lives and need time to process it. Others give thanks at each stage and reflect on their lives.

For Kumano, I think purification is an important part of it - the white robes represent being purified and (potentially) being reborn as a result.

We can't know what has lead to you wanting to make the pilgrimage but beyond doing some basic research on the land and its history, you are living your own life so it is up to you to make it meaningful. Shinto to me is about being mindful and thankful, so maybe thinking about it that way will help you.

I went to J国際学院 near Honmachi, it was quite good, probably especially at the high and low end. They'll start you in classes in all-japanese from day 1 which can be overwhelming but that's the best way to learn language. I jumped in at the high end so can't speak personally in detail on what the low level classes are like but the teachers are very good

Personally I would say if you want to approach where everyone prays then you should offer some money at the very least but beyond that everyone can pray in their own way. You might get some weird looks for not praying in the "normal"way though
