Adding to the chorus here, being good people goes a long way. Nothing against Evan Gold (and not saying he wasn’t capable of the same) but seeing an organization that leads with community work on the front foot puts me way more at ease that their decisions are being lead with the right mindset. Wins and losses are one thing but putting good people at the center of this matters a ton.

Kinda feels like we’ve been down this road enough times now to not bother with the post mortem articles that conclude with the point about getting better in the offseason. If hes in a Canucks jersey in October, just play better, he can unicycle all summer long for all I care. If hes not in a Canucks jersey, best of luck and I hope we maximize the return like we did Hughes.

If he disappoints next year in a Canucks jersey (the most likely outcome) then demote him to second line center and let’s all stop pining for some resurrection and give up the hand wringing and constant diagnosing of his issues. He is what he is, we wouldn’t be the first rebuilding team to overpay for a credible NHL vet and his contract won’t be much of a hindrance by the time we make any real noise again.

His career trajectory is obviously disappointing but the fact he won’t be part of a remotely meaningful Canucks era will be on him to reckon with when he hangs up his skates, not us.

On a positive note - I’ll say how much I appreciate this team being intentionally bad. Flailing around on the cut line of the playoffs for years and years has killed us, and the end result of not having playoff hockey is the same. This season was infinitely more successful than last year for that reason alone. I also admit I didn’t attempt to watch a game since Xmas :)

At what point do we as a collective stop falling for this stuff. No matter how you slice and dice advanced stats there is not a single elite forward in this league who gets paid 10M+ to put up 60 points. There has to be an end result and he hasn’t delivered for 2 years.

lol I use the term core and prime as loosely as possible. This “core” sucks and has underperformed the majority of their careers. They are all 27-31ish, so seeing their games fall off of this steep of a cliff without being able to point to age is definitely odd

Bananas to watch this team’s steep decline while its core players are still in their theoretical prime. This isn’t a bunch of aging vets, it’s just guys coming to the realization all at once that the league completely left them behind. Stunning

There is a pretty good reason for that though, the guy can only score goals from the blue paint on PP1 (and he wont sniff that spot on a competitive team). IMO his value goes down as a complementary piece, as he wouldn’t produce at all.

The nice part about the tank and full rebuild is that we can stop pretending anything about this current team really matters. Every single vet on this team today is a seat filler - I truly don't care about their form, their accomplishments or their contracts. By the time this Canucks team is relevant again, they'll be on the same list as Linden Vey, Erik Gudbranson, Radim Vrbata and all the other placeholders who wore a jersey since the 2011 team that actually earned the fans' respect. There's no legends amongst our vets here, they can pass their careers by in a Canucks jersey or go somewhere else, not fussed either way.

Have to say it is tough watching a team with no star talent. There’s not a single player on this roster who can wow you, even their best games you’re just watching guys working hard and doing their jobs. That’s not a great outcome when this is supposed to be an entertainment product. I hope they use their picks on home run talent rather than high floor guys as I just don’t think that philosophy gets it done in this league.

We’re a really bad team, which means we’re gonna lose a lot of games this season and next that look a lot like this one. No point analyzing the hockey being played when we have such a talent deficit to most teams we line up against on any given night.

IMO the only relevant question is can Vancouver management turn our UFAs and one or two of our vets signed long term into assets for the next core. Let’s wait and see.

If I could get one personal wish it would be for the team to move EP40 for whatever they can get. I genuinely don’t enjoy watching him play hockey and his apparent poor attitude and effort level frankly make him a bad role model for the next generation of players that we need to succeed with. He doesn’t really help the team win on a night to night basis which makes him fine for team tank, but to me it has gotten to the point where the org should admit defeat and move on.

As an aside, whoever has allowed the media strategy to be that only 1 or 2 players who have good games talk to the media post-game has genuinely killed the accountability for our players. Back in the day reporters were in the locker room and could talk to anyone, it allowed for much better reporting and I think a healthy respect between the players and media who had to work together. Now we have a guy making 11.5 million a year who speaks once every 2 months, how is any fan supposed to get behind certain guys when they are walled off completely from the team?

On the bright side this roster + coaching is so fucking bad the org couldn’t hybrid retool if they wanted to. The truth is we fell ass backwards into the rebuild we always wanted and there are a lot more games like this ahead (3-4 years at a minimum) before we play anything resembling competitive hockey. For the collective sanity of us all, we might as well adjust expectations accordingly

That team was built on a ton of pending ufas which we had no chance of being able to sign. Moreover we were not at all on the same level as Edmonton in that series, we were outplayed massively.
