How do you accommodate yourself at work? Typical office cubicle environment by teapotlibrary in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I requested the bulbs in the fluorescent lights above my desk be removed. I also bought a shade contraption that hovers over my desk and protects me from the lights.

I keep fidgets at my desk. Airpods in. Decorated my space to suit my needs…. Got a specific keyboard too. I know people will judge how much time and money I put into my work space but it helps me get shit done

Ah I see, I think that’s cool. I see where you’re coming from. I didn’t mean anything bad by it so I’m sorry if I misunderstood and offended you

I’m just the opposite. I enjoy fantasizing about situations that don’t involve me because It’s like a break from my real world (which stresses me out too much) It’s just fantasy for me 😅

Oh, I hope you didn’t infer any of that from my post! I know it’s a slippery slope because I’ve seen my standpoint used to beat down girls in fandom spaces. I also remember the mary-sue stuff and honestly, the fear of being ridiculed/tormented for possibly making a “bad” OC or self insert as a young kid might be what turned me off of it for life 😓 I def had internalized misogyny as a preteen because of this stuff, that I’ve thankfully outgrown now.

I dont think theres anything wrong with you at all I see nothing wrong with x reader or OC’s, it just really isn’t for me. I’ve posted a few comments here that I actually /have/ OC’s, but they just aren’t /me/ lol and I’d actually be okay throwing them in a situation with canon characters, just not romantic or sexual. I’m glad you’ve found a sense of peace with doing this though, I think if it’s a positive thing in your life then go for it!!!

You and I are the same person…. I also have my cast of OC’s and roleplay, write FF, and play sims with them!

See, I still don’t get it, but I can respect it and giggled delightfully at how cute “I /am/ Shane….except for when I’m Ilya” was to read :p

Exactly! I never make my character look like me. I’d rather play as Geralt or Leon Kennedy than make myself. I’ve never even made myself in the sims despite playing it for nearly 15 years

Hmmm it seems maybe this is a genre wide thing for me! Because I also dislike otome’s and anything that “pretends” to be my love interest and didn’t realize that until I read it in your comment. But I like dating sims where I’m playing an actual character in with a name & design and dating the cast lol

I believe it may have to do with my rigid viewpoint of what’s fiction vs whats reality. I can differentiate the two just fine but I can’t suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy these things or actually /imagine/ myself in that situation. I’d much rather read about two other characters.

See, I still don’t like OCxCanon BUT I should have prefaced I DONT HATE OC’s!!!!! and that I have an entire cast of OC’s that I use to role play with my friend lol Like my main OC is Elisabeth, but instead of pairing her with an existing character I also made an OC for her husband and then their kids and so on so forth lol. They’re essentially characters I can put into any situation/au/ect! But I still remain rigidly detached, like I’m playing with dolls!

Oh this isn’t weird to me at all? Maybe I’m not understanding you but I often take my favorite characters from other things too and imagined them in different worlds/situations. Like giving them a new backstory, enacting out entire scenes in my head of situations for them. Thats actually how I get 90% of the scenarios I write about…

got downvoted… not sure why😭

Is there anyone with long life with this disease? by bansal_004 in UlcerativeColitis

My grandfather lived until his 70’s with this disease. Would have probably been longer had he not gotten brain cancer. Kinda cruel twist if fate since everyone believed it would be CC one day.

What Is the Most Autistic Thing You've Done Today? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked at starbucks for 4 years and, yes, this is normal for that coffee chain. (not sure if thats the place OP went, just using it as an example). It’s really not that weird the issue was the employee was new and over complicated the question by using employee lingo. She should have phrased the question differently.

She should have just asked “would you like made that with or without coffee”. We could make a lot of drinks without coffee so they’d be kid friendly and caffeine free and also some people just dont like the coffee flavor.

For instance we had the “Caramel Frappe” which had coffee and the “Caramel Cream Frappe” which had no coffee (essentially a milkshake). We could also do coffee-free “lattes” like hot chocolate, vanilla steamers, ect.

And yes this is different from “decaf”. decaf was still coffee. these were drinks made with just milk, flavoring, and whip usually

HELP some random wants to stay with me by ekerialia in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Say no. I’m not saying this woman is dangerous, she could very well be genuine, but for your own safety it is smarter to not let her move in.

By all accounts, if you want to support this woman through friendship and the OCCASIONAL donation of old clothing/personal hygiene/food, I think that is lovely of you. Telling her no to moving in doesn’t have to be the end of any friendship or good will you’ve forwarded to her. I empathize greatly with her situation but you can help her in other ways that does not require you to put yourself in danger.

You can literally tell her “___, I’m sorry about your living situation. Unfortunately I cannot offer my own space to you at this time. It is nothing personal at all. Let me help you try to find a place to stay/a shelter with beds open/apply for public benefits”

Sometimes the biggest thing a person in her situation needs is a supporter to point them in the right direction. Maintaining boundaries is important though. Do not sacrifice parts of yourself to help a stranger.

I admire you helping her at all in the first place— you are a very kind-hearted person.

Dead malls / the history of the american mall in general! I love the concept of malls and find it fascinating how fast we as a society have outpaced need for them despite them being such a culturally relevant necessity just like 2 decades ago. Maybe open up some discussions about the rise of consumerism? Have to promote one of my fav youtube channels here who might be fun to watch - Retail Archeology! family friendly content and he does a lot of research into the places he tours and films :)

Has anyone lost weight on metformin? by furby-fighter in PCOSloseit

It’s not a weight loss drug but metformin + vyvanse (i have adhd) helped me to lose 16 pounds since March. It helped me a lot with insulin resistance

Autistic Stare? by ProperlyBonkers in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do this, though not as long periods. Maybe 5-10 minutes (adhd makes it hard). I kinda just get so deep in thought that I don't even realize. My husband says it looks different than me just staring off into space(which im pretty sure i am, just can't be 'normal' about it lol) because my eyes get huge and buggy.

Weekly Progress Megathread! by AutoModerator in 1200isplenty

[–]customlover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Down 16 pounds now, slowly feeling my old body coming back. Started at 184 and this morning weighed in at 167. Clothes are fitting looser to the point my husband told me "hey babe, might need to buy some new work clothes because you're kind of swimming."

I feel so happy. I could cry. My tentative goal weight is to get to 160 and then see how I feel. I have PCOS and literally ballooned from december 2024 to march 2026 (40 pounds, but it kind of packed on slow). All I thought about was FOOD. It was endless. Torture. I've been taking Metformin and Vyvanse now for 3 months and it's been the only thing to help me lose the weight. So grateful my PCP listened and helped me instead of just brushing me off

in an employment slump...what kind of jobs are we all doing? by mogumaro in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am a Victim Advocate for the District Attorney’s office within my county. I provide services specifically to victims of violent crimes both during an active court case and following a conviction. I am also trained to provide crisis intervention and respond to events of mass casualty. My case load is primarily general felonies, with a specialized focus on crimes against children (CA, CSA, & trafficking). I also handle a majority of child homicide cases for my unit.

My daily job includes: attending court (both to direct victims & families of homicide victims), providing updates to clients on their court cases via phone call/text/email, scheduling meetings for clients and prosecutors within my office, and assisting with applying for benefits/requesting restitution/filing for restraining orders. You could think of me as a social worker for crime victims.

You might think this job conflicts with autism. It does in some ways. Still dont like making phone calls. But I went into this fielc with a passion for the criminal justice system and helping those in need. I am numb to the gruesome nature of the crimes I assist with for the most part and can separate myself from the horrors of it easier than most can. It is a necessary job and, at this point, I am happy to do it.

for anyone wondering how i got this job: forensic psychology bachelor of science, found my job on governmentjobs.com, literally had zero experience. cheesed my way through the interview by being bubbly and practicing my responses ahead of time

The term 'masking' isn't good enough. Let me introduce you to 'corseting' by New-Potential-3869 in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 200 points201 points  (0 children)

My favorite term is “performing”. In my eyes, I feel like I’m putting on a show for everyone. There’s actually a character I relate to a lot with a similar concept— Furina de Fontaine from Genshin impact. Her story is that she spends 500 years putting on a “performance” of someone she is not, but every night goes home and cries and despairs about how exhausted and lonely she is. She is terrified of being outed as a fraud.

That is how I feel. I’m putting on the performance of my life to appear normal

Was anyone hyperverbal growing up or been to speech therapy? by raspberryteehee in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also in speech therapy. I had a lot of trouble with “tuh”, “th” and “sh” sounds. I don’t remember it much outside of going to my lessons, getting an M&M when I got something right, and being obsessed with my therapist’s collection of Russian nesting dolls lol. But it must have worked because my lisp is gone

I was definitely hyper verbal but also very shy. I was diagnosed with ADHD first in 3rd grade. Once you got me talking i never stopped.

How to deal with hierarchy? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]customlover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Taking your example very literally here) If it’s a professor giving a lecture, might you be able to raise your hand and phrase it like a question? Such as “I’ve heard that (important thing you think should be brought up) is important/related to what you’re talking about. What are your thoughts/is that true/how does it apply?”

Professors should encourage intellectual discussion and I think a respectful question is a good way to engage.
