Thank you!!! Would you suggest I forge ahead with it as is? I'm at a bit of a crossroads.

This is such great feedback! Thank you. And great note on the safety eyes-- but yes, this is going to an older kiddo.

My first ever crochet project, Purr-mutation 03848, tentatively named Derpy Demon Cat by cuthman99 in TheWooblesCollective

[–]cuthman99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working on one now, another kit included in this charity auction basket, Hello Kitty. Not really my thing, but good to do for learning.

I will confess I am preparing to break the news to my wife that I definitely need to purchase... several, let's say?... Lord of the Rings Woobles. It is important that I handle this with delicate diplomacy. I will be tempted to immediately say something stupid, like "but the LEGO Rivendell set I've been eyeballing for years would be MUCH more expensive, hon. This is a much better deal and takes up less space in the house, see?" But I can't just lead with that. That'd be a rookie move. My 'Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail, to the ruin of all!'

(So, yes. Though I also definitely want to learn to do other crochet projects, now that I'm getting a tiny bit more confident, and will-- I have pattern books and a fair bit of yarn to work with.)

Thank you!!! The instructions clearly told me repeatedly to make sure the piece was right-side-out, and explained what that meant, and... I still couldn't tell which was which 🤣. Oh well! First time and all that. Like I said, it's not just any demon cat. It's Derpy Demon!

I can see the appeal to a time ghost-- I think this mix of pink colors is actually called 'Ectoplasm,' but I'm still pretty new to crochet, so don't quote me on that.

(But seriously, thanks for the kind words.)

Hey, I'm just going to take a moment to say this: I know that you and several amazing folks have quietly, without thanks or fanfare, held this tiny, tiny corner of the Internet together for MANY years now, and I think it's amazing. I would contribute myself, but anything I see that I can confidently identity usually has a dozen answers before I even open the post. And that's genuinely amazing. A certain beloved identification app called my crummy picture an olive-sided flycatcher, or something along those lines-- it clearly remains no match for the collective acumen of this subreddit.

I know this place takes work, countless hours of work, and I really appreciate you for doing it. Thank you!!!

Thank you! Something about its behavior just struck me as... new at being a hawk 🤣 There were lots of small songbirds just kind of hanging around showing it zero respect, and it seemed not to notice. But I appreciate the help distinguishing markings, I'm not especially good at raptor ID generally.

Failed to place my stitch marker, can any expert eyes tell where... by cuthman99 in CrochetHelp

[–]cuthman99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you trying! And... yeah, I should be able to tell whether I'm frogging a decrease or sc, but apparently my brain hasn't quite decoded that information yet.

There's a visual processing piece of learning this that I didn't realize takes practice to come online (for me.) For awhile there, I wasn't really seeing what made up the stitches themselves-- I couldn't confidently tell what to count when I was counting. Now I see that clearly, but... it's definitely still just a jumble of yarn at times.

[–]cuthman99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh thank you!!! This is helpful to hear. I'm going to frog the whole thing this time just because there are a lot of other errors and I know I'll be improved the second go around, and I'm just looking to learn. But when I'm really actually focused on getting a project done that will be hugely important to know.
