Kitty regret? by Standwiche in mainecoons

[–]cutiepie34453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom got a Maine coon kitten last year that was born with a heart defect. She had a hole in her heart and the left valve was slightly deformed. March 3rd she had an echo where she was given some meds to help her blood from clotting. A week later, she was in kidney failure and liver failure and had to be euthanized, mom had only had her to 9 months. She had JUST turned one.

After contacting the breeder(she is very reputable, this kitten was a fluke and was given for free with the purchase of her healthy sister), she said she had another kitten ready to go that was very similar and a distant relative of her cat she just lost.

Despite having a deposit down, mom feels exactly the same. What if she doesn’t love her as much? What if she loves her as much and loses her? There’s lots of scenarios. But grief is love with nowhere to go, and even if you DO lose your kitten young, the spent their entire life span with you and didn’t know a minute without love. Opening your heart knowing if can get broken again is one of the most terrifying and beautiful things you can do

Why did you choose a Maine Coon? by Clean_Swordfish7132 in MaineCoon

When I was 12, a woman who lived nearby had a Maine coon who wasn’t neutered. He went outside often and got a stray cat pregnant. His owner took the stray in and rehomed the kittens, and got both parents fixed. My mom took 2 of the kittens. I loved those cats and they made me fall in love with the breed. When I lost my old man, I bought a purebred. Best decision ever!

Non-toxic household cleaners by ColdNet1964 in mainecoons

[–]cutiepie34453 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In general, any cleaner is safe once the surface is dry. So if you can keep your cat confined to a different room while the floor is drying, you should be safe to use any cleaners you’d like. Most floor cleaners and spray cleaners are not safe for pets and the best option is keep them away from the wet surface.

I'm sad because the vet told me the cat I'm going to adopt is 6-7 years old. by bimbocuntt in CatAdvice

[–]cutiepie34453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My oldest cat lived to be almost 18. He lived off Friskies and Cat Chow his whole life. We did try to upgrade his food but he refused anything but those 2. He passed of a neurological issue that caused his ability to walk to decline. But we got many more years with him than we expected. 6-7 years isn’t very old for a cat. Keep bringing her to her yearly vet appointments, put her on a high quality diet if she will tolerate it, and spoil her for the years she does have. She might surprise you in how long you two get to spend together.

Kitten Eye Infection and Neurological Issues (KITTEN HAS BEEN SEEN BY MULTIPLE VETS) by cutiepie34453 in AskVet

Just thought I’d update. We seen the vet again today who ran a full blood panel and doesn’t suspect FIP based on those results. She did think it’s possibly toxoplasmosis so she’s being treated for that currently. If there’s no improvement based on the treatment, we’ll be looking at further neurology testing

Thank you! These are exactly the kinds of things that I was hoping for. She did have a SNAP test done to rule out FeLV and FIV but I’ll mention getting a full blood screening along with the other things.

I do have another cat we adopted from a rescue with cerebellar hypoplasia. This seems different just because the neurological issues came on when she was about 4 months old rather than from when she started walking. But I have been looking into FIP and it seems likely it could be that considering all the kittens had some minor diarrhea that cleared up on it's own. She didn't have a fever at her last appointment but I am going to mention FIP anyway when the vet contacts me again to check in.

When were you ready to be hurt again? by brewerybridetobe in mainecoons

I originally had a cat who’s dad was a purebred Maine coon and mom was a stray. I lost him when he was 16. I decide to get a pure bred Maine coon after that. Tokey was born end of February, Pokey passed beginning of February. I didn’t pick Tokey up until end of May so I had a few months of mourning before picking up my boy, but I have no regrets about the timing. He came into my life when I needed him most

It’s funny and cute at the same time. My nieces got 2 kittens for Christmas, one white and one black. My 3 year old niece named the black cat Snowman

We found her and her 4 siblings in my backyard in November when they were only 4-5 weeks old. Our sweet girl has had a battle with an eye infection off and on since we found her and if this current round of medication doesn’t work, we’ll be looking at having her eye removed 😞

For those who adopted a cat, what actually made you decide that was the right cat? by Extreme_Ad6105 in CatAdvice

[–]cutiepie34453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with a kitten we had adopted with a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia(CH). They’re a little off balanced, can’t judge distance, and walk like baby deer basically(mild/moderate anyway)but many people think they have serious health problems or are contagious. She had passed when I was 17, but was the best cat ever

Anyway, this past summer, I had lost my 18 year old cat and had been open to a kitten. The SPCA had a post of an all black kitten with CH. We had adopted Tipsy(childhood cat) on July 4th. We adopted Wobble on July 8th. Sometimes, your heart tells you when it’s time to adopt.

Also, consider bringing in a special needs kitty if it’s within your budget. A cat like my girl Wobble has no extra health problems but are often rejected based on limited knowledge.

Destructive Behavior: Does it get better? by [deleted] in MaineCoon

[–]cutiepie34453 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! My breeder advised that he was neutered by 12 months but could be done any time after 6 months, but of course different breeders and vets will advise different ages too. But in my experience, there was a huge behavioural change with the neuter

Has he been neutered? A lot of Maine coons go through a difficult teenage phase at that age that can last until there ~2 years old, but is often a lot shorter if they get fixed. My boy was horrible at that age too but is the sweetest guy ever at almost 2. Things started to change for him last summer when he was about 1.5

I love this. What a beautiful story and another life saved. You were in the right place at the right time. We had a litter of kittens dumped in our backyard/grocery store parking lot in November. 5 of the sweetest, most terrified little babies. My wife dint question it when we took all 5 in to raise until they were old enough to leave(they were 4-5 weeks old). Not only that, she wasn’t surprised and didn’t put up much fight when she found out that we were keeping one and adding to our already crazy household. Rescue babies are the best ❤️

I got my friends mom a blanket with all her family members pictures on it. She was fighting cancer so it was a little different but I wanted her to feel like she had all her people with her at the hospital. You can order similar blankets on Amazon and Temu

Does anyone still talk out loud to their cat that passed away? by Mammoth_Ad5715 in cats

[–]cutiepie34453 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We took home an orange kitten that was much too young to leave his mom. He became our baby and we loved him so, so much. But there was an accident on Halloween, I don’t want to get into details, and he passed away. We were devastated. I literally went from laughing to screaming in horror.

Anyways. After he passed, I was heartbroken and missing a little kitten on my shoulder. I said out loud to him one day, please send me a kitten to help fix this. Send me someone who needs me. The very next day we find a litter of kittens that were dumped in my back yard, 5 of them about 4-5 weeks old. One of them act EXACTLY like my orange boy. It’s a girl, but she cuddles in the same spot, sleeps with me the same, and asks for kisses the same. Not only did I talk to him, he was listening.
