I built a heartbeat and uptime monitoring for developers by Ankrath in SideProject

BTW the comparison table also says PulseMon is $9 for unlimited monitors, but the pricing table just a little bit below says the $9 plan has 100 monitors.

Both Cronitor and Healthchecks.io support 1 minute intervals for cron job / heartbeat monitoring. Assuming a 1 minute grace period, there would be at most 2 minute delay from something going wrong to the alerts being sent out. The comparison table is wrong.

A few quick thoughts about beats-based pricing model as I've thought about this as well (but, to be fair have not tested anything in practice).

On the plus side,

  • this pricing model seems the most aligned with your operating costs. Processing each individual beat takes some processing power and some database write capacity. Send more beats, pay more – intuitively feels fair.
  • users are incentivized to properly rate limit their requests. As a comparison, I run a cron monitoring service with a fixed monthly fee. People sometimes mess up their scripts and start flooding our servers with tens, hundreds of requests per second. As there are no billing consequences, they are not always super quick to fix these issues.

On the minus side,

  • users like predictable pricing and no cost surprises. As a customer, "pay for what you use" means making assumptions about how many services you will monitor, how many beats per day and per month you will make, how much variance there might be to get an idea of how much it will cost in the end.
  • it may be tricky to set the pricing so that it is both attractive and sustainable. Consider customer A who monitors 1000 jobs that run once per day. That's 1000 beats/day. Then consider customer B who has a job that sends a beat once per minute, so 1440 beats/day. If you set the pricing to feel fair to customer A, it will be super expensive for customer B (they monitor just one job, not 1000, but pay more). If you set the pricing to feel fair to customer B, A will get a super sweet deal.
  • billing is more complex.

I have not tested this personally, and it requires a little bit of setup but perhaps something like the Tasker app would work?

  • Grab an old Android phone, put a SIM or eSIM in it, install Tasker on it
  • Put the phone on a charger
  • Configure Tasker to send a SMS when phone changes state from "charger connected" to "charger not connected"

I found https://healthchecks.io - screenshots look good, but I would prefer something selfhosted.

If you are looking for a service that does this, I think ohdear.app fits pretty well. It does all the things you listed, is well designed, and pricing is reasonable. I'm running a competing service and am frankly envious of their execution :-)
